Over 100 Years Of Aloha
History
Established in 2006.
The Kauai Inn originally opened in 1890 as the Fairview Hotel. In 1925 it became the Lihue Hotel. The Kauai Inn held many large events from travel agent extravaganzas to Miss Kauai contest in 1956.
The Kauai Inn was moved to Kalapaki Beach in the sixties and renamed the Kauai Inn. In 1991 it underwent a three million dollar renovation only to be hit by one of the worse hurricanes of it’s history, Hurricane Iniki. Hurricane Iniki reported winds of up to 225mph atop Kokee.
Soon after, the McKnight family found themselves purchasing the hotel with no roofs. After years and just a few workers, the McKnights moved buildings, brought wood floors back to life and the Historic Kaua’i Inn. At most times the work crew was no more than one or two hired workers along with the McKnight family of five, Tom and Jami with children Tony, Aaron, and Megan. The McKnight family has been hospitality entrepreneurs for over 100 years. Every guest is special to these fourth generation hospitality owners!
Meet the Business Owner
Tom M.
Business Owner
The McKnight family has been hospitality entrepreneurs for over 100 years. Tom McKnight, and spouse, Jami, built the Timber Lodge Inn in 1986. In the early 90’s, Timberlodge was the lodging for the cast of the TV series Northern Exposure. Tired of the cold, the McKnights moved to Poipu, Kauai with their children, Tony, Aaron and Megan. Their plan was to build condos on their property for a quieter life style. In 92′ Kaua’i was hit by one of it’s worst hurricanes. Hurricane Iniki swept over Kaua’i leaving a trail of total destruction. Soon after, Tom and Jami found themselves owners of The Kauai Inn, which did not even have a roof. The family spent ten yrs rebuilding the Kaua’i Inn w/only a few hired carpenters throughout the process. During this period, the McKnight family also bought 2 homes that were destroyed from Iniki on the south shore and rebuilt them as a family.
Tom and Jami, they are still active in the hospitality business, but are somewhat retired.
