John Dough Bakery

I went here to get quite a few cookies for a party. I got the regular and chocolate butter cookies and a few types of kolackys. The kolackys were very good, the plain butter cookies were good, the chocolate just ok. One complaint: the girl who helped me apparently did not know what «a dozen» meant. She just kept on putting cookies in the box, obviously many more than a dozen until I told her to stop. How can you work at a bakery and not know what a dozen is?

Really enjoyed the atmosphere… great coffee… very friendly service… tasty almond croissant. A nice relaxing haven in the middle of a hectic day!

All i’m going to say is, how can you run a profitable bakery and be closed on Sunday? I mean maybe this is normal but i just don’t see it.
Typical of Lisle and the majority of most of their businesses. Im sure the bakery items are great but i’ll never know because their closed on days when i can actually go in to purchase.

A friend brought me a pastry from here and Lord have mercy on my taste buds. It was amazing. Melt-​in-​your-​mouth good! I highly recommend it!

Bought a Dutch Apple Pie — the apples were hardly baked. Crisp and hard. I will never buy a Dutch Apple Pie again. Eclairs and brownies were awesome

Have tried to go here a few times recently. I guess it’s my fault I didn’t check the website or call ahead, but they did change their hours. I went there on Mondays. First Monday they closed at 1pm. Got there too late. Second Monday they were closed to do inventory. Finally got there before they closed only to see they removed their Wall Menus. They no longer list what sandwiches, salads, or soups they offer and they also don’t list prices on most things. What the heck is this new trend amongst bakeries? Can’t be bothered to tell you how much things cost. So I am constantly asking for prices and she is running all over the place to figure it out. As I leave I tally the balance (no receipt) and I realized I was overcharged by $ 2 + tax.
Food was decent but overpriced, then add the overcharge and slowed down service and ridiculous hours of operation. I cannot recommend anything about this bakery.

What started out as a disaster in picking up a cake for our Birthday… Me not being able to get the cake due to a delayed Eye Doctor Appt/​Dilated Eyes. Husband had to go and when he arrived at John Dough… They had closed early;-(;-(. No Birthday Cake for us. I wrote on the Bakery Facebook Page. An emergency forced the Bakery to close earlier. No Note or Phone call;-(. It all worked out OK. We weren’t home but received 2 phone calls trying to get the cake to us… And when I was able to talk to the Bakery the next day. They gave us a more than Generous Credit to get a cake in the future. It’s more than I expected and we will try again another time…,

I honestly can’t explain how AMAZING their customer service is.
A friend of mine decided to throw a big 1^st birthday party for her daughter and I offered to get the cake. I’d never been to John Dough bakery before, but she highly recommended it. After talking to my usual bakery and John Dough, I realized that the cake design was somewhat problematic. Michael (who I believe is the owner) offered me a variety of options to allow me to keep the design I liked and still feed all of the guests.
Since I live in the city and the bakery is all the way in Lisle, so someone else picked up the cake. Unfortunately, he never transported a cake before and by the time the cake reached home, it was smashed. I didn’t know what to do so I called the bakery’s «emergency» number.
Michael went above and beyond to help me fix the cake, despite it not being the bakery’s fault. I don’t know what I would have done if not for his help. Michael did such a good job fixing the cake that no one even noticed.
Everyone loved the cake, especially the birthday girl!
I will definitely be back!

One would never think that this little place in downtown Lisle, IL would make such amazing customized cakes. When your drive by, it looks like a little hole in the wall bakery in downtown Lisle, IL, however as soon as you set foot in the doors, you realize WOW this is not just a little bakery, but a cute little café where you can hang out and grab coffee with friends, have a small meeting related to work, or even grab a small bite to eat for lunch. You can even fulfill your daytime craving of something sweet as they have tons of freshly baked cookies, cupcakes, tarts, pastries, freshly brewed coffee, etc. readily available for the everyday walk in customers.
I initially came across John Doughs Bakery on Unilocal,as I was trying to find a bakery who was willing to make a customized cake for a 60^th surprise birthday in less than a week. Yes, I was that bad daughter-​in-​law who had one responsibility for my mother in laws surprise birthday party, and that was to place a cake order. Of course what did I do, procrastinate literally till the last week to try to place an order. I called many backfired around where I live, however they all declined me as they were solid book for the weekend. I came across john doughs and called them and I spoke to one of the bakers named Michael. He was terrific. He told me they were very busy as well, but he will squeeze my order in. I met up with him and provided a picture of what I wanted, my special flavor which I wanted and any other instructions. Let me tell you, everything came out perfect just the way I wanted it. The picture I’ve posted is the cake which hey made for me and it looks exactly like the one I showed them, and on top of it, it tasted deliciously (piña colada flavor cake with custard, pineapple chunks and coconut shavings). Guest who don’t like cake came up to me asking where I got the cake from as they thought it was wonderful. This was a cake flavor which I brought to them and they fulfilled my request perfectly.
I’m sure everyone at that bakery is very nice and friendly, however if you are looking for someone to make customized cake for an occasion go to John Dough Bakery and talk to Michael. :). John Dough Bakery is defiantly going to be one of my go to bakeries from now on. Lastly to top off the great service, efficiency, and quality which they offer, they are totally and completely affordable and are definitely not one of those types of bakeries that rip you off for adding extras to make your cake looks fancy, for instance new cake flavors or using fondut on your cake.

A wedding cake from John Dough was included in our wedding package last August. The cake basically turned out how I wanted and tasted pretty good as well. The bakery told us that if we provided a professional photo of the cake, we would receive a complimentary 6″ anniversary cake the following August.
I called about a month ago to order our anniversary cake. I was informed that they had changed management but would honor the complimentary cake. Their hours aren’t very convenient (7am-​5pm) so I requested a 7am pick up time (before work) a couple of days before our anniversary. I arrived to pick up the cake promptly at 7am without issue. I received a call a little over an hour later that they had given me the wrong cake. I was already on the Metra into the city and could not get the cake back to the bakery before 5pm. They told me it was some type of strawberry cake and I could just keep it. Turns out it was red velvet and cream cheese (not a very good red velvet). Not even close to strawberry (or the strawberry & lemon cake I had ordered)! Total bummer…

The bakery has made some changes, one of them being the baker. They’ve also changed some of their recipes.
The cupcakes were not kid friendly at all. I had purchased 4 for my kids and their cousin. My kids tried it, but immediately noted the difference in the frosting. It isn’t firm like most store bought or bakery cupcakes, it kind of flopped over and was slightly melted by the time I had opened the box. With kids it’s always a texture thing, and after the frosting experience, my kids wouldn’t even give the cake part a chance. So this gave me an opportunity to give these cupcakes a chance.
The frosting was different, but good. It definitely didn’t taste processed, like most frostings do, and you could tell their wasn’t as much sugar used. The cake also didn’t taste as overly sweet as most cupcakes, but it was light, not too dense, and it tasted delicious. My Aunt and I shared a vanilla cupcake and were pleasantly surprised by our cupcake experience.
I only give the bakery 3 stars because the cupcakes were not kid-​friendly, and typically I feel cupcakes are meant for kids. This is definitely an adult-​friendly cupcake. I did not try anything else this visit to review.

Stopped into John Dough on a whim the morning of a friend’s wedding. Excellent service and selection of fresh baked goods — muffins, coffee cake, Danish, sweet treats, and an adequate listing of lunch sandwich options.
There was such a good selection, I could not eat just one item: a cheese Danish and a raisin Danish. Both were light, flaky, and buttery but the raisin Danish stood out because it was not overpowered by a light sugary glaze that tied the texture and flavors together perfectly.
I’m not often in this area, but know if I am in the future I’d definitely support John Dough over a national chain. My compliments to the bakers!

Yeah I think they existed in another building down the street, where we had a few birthday cakes that were the BOMB. Then someone said they’d moved next to the Nook (alert, yarn fans of Lisle: you can get wifi, capuccino, ice cream, and candy — and play a board game if you need a break from pearl one, knit two), I checked them out.
Coffee cake was delish. We bought a bunch. I loved their sandwiches too, though the chicken wrap needed to be eaten quickly or get soggy.
The chocolate frosted donut was a disappointment. But then I realized that while I love chocolate, I usually only eat vanilla frosted donuts. Sprinkles are always a bonus. So I went back to John Dough, after the grand re-​opening, tried a vanilla frosted dealie, complete with jimmies on top, and BLAMMO, de-​lish. It was cakey with interesting subtle flavors like maybe dash of nutmeg or somethingsomething or hell, paprika or Chinese 5-​spice or garlic powder (totally kidding), whatever it had flavor befitting an amazing cake. The texture was really interesting, slightly spongy without being like sponge cake. I hate sponge cake. But I loved this donut. Plus, the frosting had an interesting texture in addition to the usual crunch from the confetti on top. It was almost as if there were faint bits of dried coconut. It was an amazing donut. And all you hosers who go to that cramped Dunkin’ Donuts 2 mins away on Ogden are missing the real thing. Go to John Dough. Plenty of parking because Lisle is a weird ghost town. Don’t let Ogden hog all the glory. Get thee to Main Street. Oh also? They serve chocolate covered bacon … on a stick. I am not into pork but I thought it was hilarious. I will be buying a piece for some pork lovers in my life. That takes a lot of nerve for a shop amid the tumbleweeds.

John Dough Bakery — Super cute little bakery on Main Street in Lisle. I noticed it while I was walking back to my car from a shopping excursion. The name was so creative, I just had to see if they were open late afternoon and they were. Lucky me.
I was warmly greeted & waited on immediately. I browsed the kolaches, tarts, coffee cakes, donuts, cookies, croissants, and too many other things to remember. I decided on 2 kolaches & a croissant — they were yummy. The kolaches were the perfect size — kind of small so you don’t overdo it. And the croissant was excellent — not bready like some others I’ve tried. It was perfectly light & flaky.
You could tell the girl who served me was excited about this newly (grand re-​opening according to the sign) opened business & explained that they also serve lunch; including sandwiches & paninis. I’ll definitely stop here next time I’m at the shop across the street.

The changes made to the bakery are wonderful. I was there about a month before the changes and it terrible. The food was bland and not fresh. But now they hired an actual award winning chef. I brought my 3 kids there and we loved everything.
I tried the peppered bacon turkey and the brie, ham and asparagus pannini. Plus we tried the brownie, blondie, cinnamon roll, yogurt parfait and the flourless chocolate cake.
My wife had the curried egg salad and tuna salad and loved them.
Times change and i am glad this place finally decided to catch up. Give it a chance and dont pay attention to old reviews. They are open to suggestions too. If you dont like something, tell them and they will listen.

I’ve been here a few times. They have great sandwiches & soups for lunch. Convenient location in downtown Lisle. They have a small seating area… perfect place for meeting someone for breakfast or lunch.
Today, I went to get a few pastries. Great selection & reasonable prices. I will be sure to visit John Dough again soon!

I am on a quest to find a really great donut shop/​bakery in the area and John Dough Bakery was next on my list.
This place was good, but I was not amazed by it. The inside is nothing special. A few tables here and there, and the glass case where all the goodies are kept. They had a lot to choose from which was nice and it all looked excellent. Lemon bars, danishes, donuts, bagels, cakes, anything your little heart desires.
We came in to satisfy our sweet tooth, but ended up having lunch as well because the lady at the counter bragged that they make the best chicken salad sandwiches and that everything is made fresh by their chef. Ok, we’ll have that and your roast beef sandwich.
When they brought it out to us, I was not happy. We told her we were going to be eating there and didn’t want it to go, but when she brought the food out to us, it was wrapped up in plastic wrap and wax paper. She gave us two napkins and set them down on the table. I was so confused. Maybe she didn’t hear that we wanted to dine in? Should I ask her for some plates?
I looked around and noticed that the other people eating sandwiches there also had them wrapped up with no plates. Seriously? If people tell you they are going to dine in, at least put the sandwiches on a glass plate and make it look nice presentation-​wise.
My husband loved his chicken salad sandwich. He said it was really great and probably one of the best he has ever had (aside from my own homemade chicken salad of course).
My roast beef sandwich was nothing special. You could probably find something similar in a speedway gas station, wrapped up the same way too. It came with lettuce, tomato, red onion, cheddar cheese, and a horseradish mayonnaise sauce.
The prices for their bakery sweets were just right. I wouldn’t argue them. The prices for the sandwiches on the other hand were a little high. We paid $ 7 for each sandwich (doesn’t include chips or a drink), and honestly I could have made them at home. They really weren’t that special.
The customer service was excellent. Everyone that worked there was so friendly and nice. They made sure to address everyone as they entered the bakery and everyone as they left. I love that. They also worked really hard to keep the place clean which was great to see. If no one was ordering something at the counter, they didn’t linger around talking to each other. They were either arranging the goodies in the display case or out on the floor cleaning up tables and the floors.
Overall, it is a nice place. If you are going to eat here though, stick with the dessert stuff, don’t bother with the sandwiches. You will be pleased! :-)

My dad knows John from when he was still running his previous bakery called Upper Crust and ever since John Dough Bakery opened, he’s been pushing me to try out John’s new bakery. I had actually been dying to go try out his pastries since I’m always passing by the store & one day, I finally had the time to try it with my brother.
First of all, the costumer service was somewhat disappointing. There was a middle aged lady behind the counter who wasn’t very friendly and mumbled when she talked to us so I didn’t understand what she was saying. She made us feel uncomfortable & really awkward. But there was one young man working in the back who was really friendly when he brought out the food.
My brother ordered the BLT, which he loved! He said he’d definitely be back to try out more sandwiches here! I had a Chocolate Raspberry cupcake, which was okay; I’ve had much better cupcakes. The cake was somewhat dry, but the frosting was good; light, fluffy & not too sweet. I might try out other pastries the next time I come.

We came here this morning with a groupon. We’d been wanting to check this place out for a while, since it’s super close to our house. Wish we would’ve come sooner!
We got to try the chocolate éclair, cherry cheese danish, lemon bar, and hazelnut nut coffee. All super tasty. We also got a lemon pound cake to go.
Definitely try to get a lemon bar or kolacky. We got the last lemon bar at 9:30am (sorry, not sorry). The kolacky was sold out, so I’m thinking it’s probably pretty good.

I’m one of those stubborn people only try the bakery stuff from a bakery. If I want a sandwich, I go for a Café or deli. From my two trips to here to get my cookies, cupcakes, mini Cannolis, and my coffee, I was not too thrilled.
Sorry, I’m not fan of the name «John Doe» which I heard the most from CSI type TV episode. The store looks better from inside for sure. Looks like a nice comfy place to sit down and enjoy yourselves. The only thing stopped me do so: the Coffee. First time I tried the regular coffee on the way to work, it was watered done and lack of the nice taste. Second time it was decaf in the afternoon, same nasty stuff. It is at the same poor quality level as the coffee you get from the vendors at Lisle train station.
I think mini cannolis were fine with the nice cute size. Those were welcome by the co-​workers. Cookies were dry and too sugary. Sorry to say that I wasted the half Oatmeal cookie. My daughter didn’t finish hers neither which never happened.
The services were fine for the most part. I’m not sure I should try something else again even I pass here twice daily.
