Shepherd’s Gate Thrift Store

Since when did thrift stores start cherry picking donations? I went to donate about 5 boxes of really nice items today and the man wanted to cherry pick and I told him take all or none and he then told me to go to good will like a total A-​hole. Little did he know all things were really unique and of value who turns really nice pricy donation down, we’ll foreigners that only have a taste for cheap shiny chrome plated flea market crap do oh well to bad. Imagine all the great items that get turned away by uninformed employees with walmart taste.

This review is about the store and organization. For years I’ve tried to donate gently used clothing and home goods and have always been turned away. My mom would donate cash to them. This past Saturday, as we brought furniture from my mom’s home to donate after her death, we were told they don’t accept pressed wood items. Really? Wow! I will no longer even try with this organization. And they especially will no longer receive funds from my family.

This is a great thrift store. The prices are very great, and as stated, better than Goodwill. I once bought an entire box of piano player rolls, and though I learned that piano player rolls are not worth anything, I bought them for a great price. Overall, a great store!

Their clothing selection didn’t look too appealing, but I found Guesstures and Pictionary here for a dollar a piece! The cashier lady didn’t look too pleased when I asked about looking at the box contents because they were taped up. I guess you just have to trust that everything is there!?! Thankfully, the games were complete and in working order.

I love this place. I always find something for myself. My husband beats me going there especially on last Friday of the month… half off everything! Staff is super friendly.

Prices here are really great, especially when you compare them to the Goodwill next door. You’d think that would push Goodwill to price more competitively — I’m not sure how they couldn’t be feeling the rub.
The selection is small, but decent. They don’t seem to stock inferior goods. I saw lots of cool jewelry, interesting books, cards, games, clothes, household items, furniture, etc. Occasionally they have sales where items are discounted further.
When I came here I got a postcard of a baby seal for my sister for, God, 10-​cents maybe? and a book for fifty-​cents. It was a really great deal. Also, the people who work here are a lot nicer than the people who work at Goodwill, and the money goes to a great cause.

This place is great! Staff really nice and helpful… and great selection of items. We went to the Goodwill next door looking for puzzles… and they had none. Decided to try Shepherds Gate and bought every single puzzle they had on the shelves… I would say we found at least 15 if not more… They also have a program where you can donate unused BART tickets to women in need. I thought this was a great idea… I would definitely shop here again.

Lots to choose from. Usually some nice furniture. Near Easter time they have a cute promotion where they hide Easter eggs with coupons or whatever in them.

This is the place to go for treasure finds. It’s super clean, staff is friendly, they even decorate areas and its just so organized. Everyday is a special sale of the day and prices are very reasonable. Every last Friday of the month the entire store is half price! Items most so fast the turn around is awesome, always new and different items to choose from.

I have bought something almost every visit. There are great finds here! The merchandise is sometimes a little over priced, but that’s not unique to a lot of thrift stores. I am only writing this review to say how rude they are at closing. They turn the lights out 15-​minutes before the store closes and my vision is not good. Just before writing this review I read a review about an older male employee being rude to a mom and her toddler. This must be the same older man that is inpolite and pushy to get you out the door at closing. Just because you’re a volunteer and want to bolt out of the store at closing doesn’t give you a license to be abrupt and rude.

Came here today to donate some clothes. Even though the store was bustling with shoppers, the donation process only took about 3 minutes since donations are delivered in the back.
Extremely friendly staff and the donation receipt took less than a minute.
If you have items that you want to donate (check their website), you value your time, and you want to help the community, then this is the place to go!

I have been here multiple times & have enjoyed my experience every time. This time the store was re-​locating the checkout counter during regular business hours (not sure why). I had two bad encounters with the same older male employee. The first time, my toddler was SITTING on the couch. Keep in mind he has little legs that obviously don’t touch the floor. I told my son as soon as he sat on the couch to not stand on the couch. He was sitting being good, I just wanted to remind him to not stand on the couch like he sometimes does at home. As soon as I looked away, the man instantly told him «mommy said no feet». I could see in my peripheral vision he had not moved, so that bugged me. The last run in with this guy was when I was talking with one of the employees. I was asking about what the price was on one of my items. The man wanted to cross in front of me to get back to working on re-​locating the checkout counter. Instead of saying excuse me or easily walking around me he said, «MOVE». I was surprised & it of course caught me off guard. I said, «I am talking to her!» (the employee). He immediately did a obnoxious giggle as he muttered, «well, I’m trying to work in this area». I said, «YOUR F*#@ing RUDE & if you would have said excuse me, maybe I would move!» Can you believe no other employee said ANYTHING, you could see this is normal behavior for this older white male. I was so upset, I just threw my basket down & told him he could clean that SH*# up too. It made me feel better until I got to the car & my poor toddler was sad that he didn’t get his shoes :-(There are a lot of other local thrift stores in town, I won’t be going here anymore. All because of some old guy who should have retired long ago.

Having donated, shopped, and volunteered here, this is my favorite thrit store in the Tri-​Valley. I like it above all the consignment shops. Volunteers are friendly and helpful. Contrary to other posts, half the store is not storage behind the scenes and I doubt it is the same square footage as Goodwill next door. Items are in better condition. Like most thrift stores you need to keep visiting and watching out for that item you want — but I got never worn designer jeans (Chico’s) for $ 25/​piece! Better than a pair of Levi’s. Money goes to support Shepherd’s Gate Women’s and Children’s Shelter — Awesome cause.

This review is for the donation process. It’s very easy to donate here and the staff helps you out from your car. I even came a little past the donation timeslot and they still accepted my items without questions or hesistation.
The drop-​off process is seamless and hassle-​free. I recommend donating here. In the event that you come late or if they are full, Goodwill is next door and they are equally helpful.

Shephard’s gate thrift was a pretty small shop. most of it is storage area. the book area didn’t have a lot of books and prices weren’t readily seen. only some books had prices on them.

The only reason I can’t give the full five stars is because it’s much smaller than it could potentially be. The wall to the shopping area is up at about half the length of the store. The Goodwill right next store is the same square footage, but double the shopping area size of Shepard’s Gate.
The wall they’ve put up severely limits the amount of stuff they can have for sale. And it shows, pretty limited inventory. But, of what they do have it’s good stuff. Lots of the jeans still had tags. And in general, lightly worn clothing. The employees are very nice and helpful. And hey, it’s for a good cause. Pretty cool thrift store overall.
