UNITS Moving & Portable Storage

I called and placed an order for a container to be dropped off but there was an error on the pickup. I called and said that we had pictures scheduled the next day for our open house. They worked a driver OT to come get our container so we could maintain our schedule. Great customer service. Plus the unit was immaculate inside and out. Great company. Highly recommend!

Moving is a pain. I am moving, after 35 years in one house. I did a quick search for «Pods» and stumbled across a local (to me) competitor in nearby Livermore and called them. Right away, I was confronted with helpful information, clear details and sage advice. It was friendly, helpful and neighborly. Checked online reviews and that is the consistent chatter about these guys.
Of course, I’m a sucker for friendly help, but I also called Pods and got a call center located somewhere in Georgia. High prices. Square Peg /​Round Hole. «This is the way we do it and you must conform to our way of business.» And I would pay extra for this? No way. Not today. Their price for my move was ridiculously expensive, and they admitted that a 100 mile move is not their sweet spot.
So, I’ve had the first of two containers from Units delivered, packed (professionally by one of their suggested vendors) and taken away for my future delivery, and the experience so far has been fantastic. The people at Units are the best — they have great tips for packing, using the storage container effectively, and their vendor list is excellent. I just cannot say enough good things about these people.

We had a wonderful experience with Units. Donna was very responsive after my initial call for a quote. She was knowledgeable and didn’t try to oversell me like many others who insisted I needed two huge pods etc. She was nice, affordable and professional. The unit came and was new and very clean. We used the pod for two weeks. We called to let Donna know we had emptied the pod and she had someone out the next day to pick it up. We would use them again and refer them to anyone in need of this service.

As a single woman undertaking a move, I could not have done it without the folks at Units: the utmost in professionalism mixed with heart. All my questions were answered, and responsiveness was consistent from beginning to end. My entire move went like clockwork, and I’d recommend Units to anyone stressed by the idea of uprooting and changing homes. Donna and Dana made sure things were run on time and as promised. Even with a tricky parking situation at my complex, they planned ahead and made it happen. Make sure you ask them to recommend movers/​packers as well (Emergency Packout — excellent!)

I tired to hold off on this review until I was able to gather my thoughts on the situation and the customer service I received from the owner Donna. I’m still pretty taken aback by her unnecessary comments.
I’ll start off by saying I booked UNITS after I had problems using another company. Like another reviewer stated, they google mapped my address, said it was probable that they’d be able to put the unit in my driveway, BUT unfortunately, that didn’t happen. For reference, my driveway is steep but when we moved in we were able to get a Uhaul truck up there with a wood plank (same as the other reviewer). We decided on a Pod Unit because we thought it would be more convenient to have the unit delivered to our new address two hours from the Bay Area. They ended up having to put the unit on the sidewalk down the street and we ended up having to hire movers with a truck to load our stuff into their truck, drive it down the driveway and store in the unit vs. planning on being able to load it ourselves with the help of friends (but of course we had no choice because no one had a truck and loading furniture and boxes is easier for friends when it’s right outside your door as opposed to down the driveway, down the street.).
Fast forward to almost 4 months later when I email to schedule my delivery for a Sunday. I received a call from Donna that they do not deliver on Sundays. You’ve got to be kidding, right? When do most people move? The weekend! My husband works Saturdays and the Saturday night before our scheduled move was his last day at work. My husband works in the restaurant industry so it is normal for him to work Saturdays and have Sundays off. I asked Donna why no one mentioned deliveries weren’t made on Sundays, presumably a very popular day to move. I also told her when I spoke to her husband Rick, there was no mention of it, no mention on the contract, nothing! This was very important information especially for people who don’t have 9−5pm /​Monday — Friday schedules. Her answer was very matter-​of-​factly and I thought to be the most careless response I’ve ever heard from a business owner– «well, most businesses aren’t open on Sundays. PODS is closed on Sundays. Even your husband is off on Sundays» — followed by a little chuckle like I was ignorant and was supposed to know that MOST businesses aren’t open on Sundays. I swear I wish the call was recorded so she can go back and listen to her condescending tone. Let me clarify that my husband is off on Sundays, BUT that in no way means the business/​company he works for is closed. In fact, I can think of a lot of businesses open on Sundays as well as people/​professions that HAVE to work Saturdays and have Sundays off — many other unit/​pod companies for one (google it — I promise you they deliver on Sundays), restaurants, servers, hotels, front desk agents, grocery stores, clerks, post office, postal workers, BART, public transportation drivers, department stores, retail clerks, law enforcement… I can go on and on!
She recommended we hire movers to unload the unit when our original plan was to have about 6 of our friends who are also off on Sundays come unload as fast as possible so we didn’t have to pay more $$$ (they charge either per hour or almost $ 500 to come back to pick up the unit). To hire movers would be about $ 137 — $ 175 — that is a cost we didn’t budget for and money we didn’t plan on spending. Moving itself is expensive already. Donna didn’t seem to understand that concern of mine as she kept commenting «This mover is very cheap and you wouldn’t have to move everything or lift a finger”– trying to make it sound like she was doing us a favor. WRONG — If it takes 2 hours JUST TO UNLOAD a 16 ft unit as fast as possible (the mover told me this directly), it’s going to be unloaded in either the driveway or garage just to get the unit emptied and on its way! THEN, you’d have to pay an extra 2 hours (minimum — $ ¹³⁷⁄₂ hours) to have those movers move furniture and boxes from the garage to the designated areas IF you didn’t want to lift a finger. Total $$ we’d have to spend BECAUSE no one told us UNITS doesnt do Sunday deliveries? About $ 300 more! By doing our move on a Sunday with 6+ friends, we wouldn’t have to worry about that because it wouldn’t be costing us $$$. Before you make comments Donna, please think them through.
Not sure if Donna was having a «bad» day or what not, but she acted nothing like the other reviews stated. «Donna and Rick provide the most outstanding customer service! They go the extra mile!» DEFINITELY not my experience with her. Total opposite, exactly. The worst thing you can do as a business owner is to make your customers feel stupid and ripped off. They may go the extra mile, but to the point where they give you NO choice but to solve your own problem because you NEED your stuff moved, you really have NO choice…
The only pro for this company: they answer phone calls and they don’t use robots.

I’ve had the pleasure of referring many people to UNITS. Donna & Rick provide the most outstanding customer service available. They always go the extra mile and with a smile. No matter what my situation in needing to assist someone with moving (I’m a Realtor), Donna will do everything she can to work with my clients, even at the last moment. I can’t say enough the professionalism and care she & Rick show to everyone.

Donna at Units is a jewel! We had what could have been a stressful move from the Bay Area to San Diego, consolidating two households, placing four units in storage while our staged house was being sold, adding another two units to the original group of four, etc, etc. We had lots of timing and logistical concerns, and guess what? Donna made it all happen and provided free psychological counseling as well! All was delivered as promised, on time, respectfully and with a minimum of conversation once the plan was placed into action. Donna also coordinated having all six units arrive in San Diego and for the drop off of the units so that we could efficiently unload two at a time and keep our driveway clear for coming and going. Hats off to Donna! Very efficient, very respectful and very cost effective. Thank you Donna!

This is the ONE thing that I did not have to stress about during our move. Containers are top notch as well as the service. Tyler in Sacramento went above and beyond to help us get through our complex move. Everyone from service on the phone to the drivers delivering the container were professional, clean, nice and very helpful. Will absolutely use this service again if needed. Will also recommend this service to anyone who is moving! Excellent service, competitive pricing.

The company I use to work for shared an office space with UNITS and when I tell you that the owners and staff care I mean they CARE.
What ever your need, owner’s Rick and Donna will go through lengths to provide. When your speaking with either one about your move, remodel etc., they are on the other end of the phone viewing maps, comparing and crunching numbers trying to find the best space for your UNIT to go and lowest prices they can offer.
I decided to write this post because of an issue a friend of mine is having with PODS. Although I referred her to UNITS she Opt’d for a POD because it was 7% cheaper and within her budget. This morning she called to tell me how she wished she would have taken my advice and went with UNITS (I told you so !! You get what you pay for .)
PODS is only taking your order and dispatching the call. UNITS is moving with you. The are giving you different options on where to place your UNIT and stay within city guidelines, to satisfy your HOA, to make sure your UNIT is not in the way of neighbors and to over all ensure easy transfer of Items from your home into the UNIT.
They build relationships that last with local and not so local movers and suppliers to provide you with the BEST and TRUSTED non affiliated referrals. UNITS will only give you THEIR TRUSTED ADVICE on how to store and move your items.
Their storage facility is climate controlled, free of pests and SECURE. I promise if you visit their warehouse at anytime with or without notice you will agree when I say they are in the business of running a great business.
Last but not least their head Driver CHAD is amazing. He is ALWAYS friendly and aims to make it to your delivery on time (Thats 10 minutes before your scheduled time at UNITS) Althouh he does not do any of you’re moving, he too makes the UNITS experience go beyond 100%. He is not your ordinary driver. He is Thor, Mr. Rogers and Ernest Hemingway all in a UNITS polo!
I can go on and on about all their great values they have put into this business but I don’t need to, you call for yourself, they will not disappoint.

Excellent service. Pod was delivered spotlessly clean. And though location for storage area made for a difficult drop, drivers on both ends negotiated the curving narrow driveway with expertise. Not a sprinkler head, garden light, or plant damaged!

Super, super, super. Made the storage and moving of our stuff as easy as possible. Everything went as smoothly as possible.

GREAT Experience with UNITS’s Services!
I would like to express a deep gratitude & appreciation to UNIT’s staff Melissa from company’s head quarters. She was my primary contact and incredible helper through a whole process moving from CA to AZ. When difficulties occurred (like rain), container could not be loaded and picked-​up. She personally called me few times asking how things are going, do I need more time and help.
Donna, the owner of Units in Livermore and her team are understanding, helpful with a solution attitude.
My container was stored for a month in Unit’s warehouse and delivered to me with zero damage.

The Staff at UNITS portable storage pods has been fantastic to work with. The ease of being able to work with my belongings at my house and not having to load and unload them myself at an offsite storage facility was amazing! Donna and her staff worked very hard to meet my needs and be helpful every step of the way. They are customer service pros!

Donna, the owner contacted me on the issue I had with her company. She sent the money back that was charged for the 2^nd trip on the same date, Also sent me a copy of the invoice like I asked… Great job! I would use them in the future.

I have been a customer of units for many years and this review is over due. I am a contractor that specializes in emergency water removal and at times need immediate service to store and protect the contents of a home. .Donna goes over and above the call of duty to ensure that storage is available when you need it. The communication is exceptional with this company even after hours. The units are clean and well maintained. When it comes to portable storage Units is the company I depend on.

Amazing company! If you need portable storage this is a quality company who truly deserves your business. It is very hard to find a company that goes above and beyond to provide superior customer service but this company truly knows the value of a customer. It’s a great experience with Units! I love their services, and the on site storage unit helps us a lot. We’re in a commercial building, and during the construction time, we’re able to store our items in the unit and get the tools when we need them. Donna and Rick provide the best service that they always try to figure out ways to solve my problems.

«UNITS» are the best pod storage you can get. Prompt delivery & service. Charges are competitive, but at the end of the day, service is what you want. Donna is very understanding to your needs & after we made our move from San Ramon to Oakley, we needed to pod removed from the driveway for our Christmas party, and while the their schedule was full & that week we were in for some heavy rain with the roads being challenge to drive, she was able to squeeze our pickup and have our driveway cleared before Christmas.
Donna clearly knows what customer service is all about. I would without hesitation use them again & will definitely recommend them to anyone who could their service. Definitely a 5 STAR business!!!

I recently moved homes and of course I had to choose the worst weekend to do it. After a record low year for rain, the heavens decided to open up and bless us with a soggy and wet saturday morning while we moved. While this normally would be a disaster, it was the easiest move we have ever had. Renting a Unit was the best choice I have made in a long time.
Instead of being rushed and trying to pack everything in a rented truck and then rush to unpack, the UNIT allowed us weeks to plan and prepare for our move and pack. We were able to gradually pack up boxes and put furniture into the Unit, so when the big day came, all we had to do was pack a few last items and then the truck picked up our UNIT and delivered to our new home.
We even had a little trouble with the truck winch breaking down, but the owner Rick showed up within minutes and fixed the cable with an angle grinder.
Even with the rain pouring down it took us only 2 hours to unload the UNIT and allowed us to be unpacked by Saturday night. Since we rented the UNIT for a whole month we still had our UNIT outside of our house for another week, which really helped us organize the house and allowed us to keep some builky items (bikes, Bar table, etc.) dry until we were able to bring it into the house,
While I hope to not move for a very long time, I will definitely reuse UNITS in the future. Not only are the units great but the staff was very helpful and responsive whenever I had questions or needed anything.

This is how all businesses should operate! I called pods 1800 phone number and all that did was waste my time since I needed the pod asap since escrow got delayed and we had to move out right away.
Once I called Units, Donna explained everything. I called at noon and she scheduled to have my unit dropped off at 4pm. She even called with a couple of updates of the driver’s arrival time. Turns out I had to get 2 units since the one wasn’t going to cut it for a 3 bedroom house and they delivered another one promptly.
Both days of unloading and loading the pods, Donna kept in close contact with me on the status of the units since the final move didn’t have a driveway. She went out of her way to juggle other customers to make my move go seamlessly. Since our final move was right by there headquarters she even drove to the new location to see what options we had for the units. Everything went amazing down to the minute.
You just don’t get good old customer service any more these days!!!
