Perhaps E-Mac’s intentions are good, but the experience left me disappointed. It is critical when engaging a contractor to obtain detailed specifications before starting. In writing. E-Mac’s two step process involves one partner scoping and pricing the job in general and the second partner detailing the construction. I bought into that idea, trusting that these experienced dudes knew what they were doing. The construction details turned out to be a few hand-​written notes on a drawing.
I have very specific ideas about how things should be built, and there wasn’t much room in the conversations for me to convey those requirements. When I objected to work that had already been done, the second partner behaved in a most unbusinesslike manner.
I know some people around town that have been happy with their work, but my advice is – get it ALL in writing before you hand them money. Look at sample construction contracts to see the level of detail that is common with this kind of work. Their «handshake» isn’t worth much if you don’t like the outcome. Also, look closely at their one page contract. Make sure you like the terms and conditions.
