Avalon Towers

Great place friendly staff but If you have children like I do, this is not the place to rent. The staff is great with the kids but some of the tenets think this place should be kid free (over heard from tenats while my kids were just wading in the pool.) I would like to add though that they cater nicely to pets. If your older, no kids, and have a pet this place is fantastic. I gave three stars because I have children and it seems not to be a family type of apartment.

My wife and I recently became members of the Avalon community in long beach. A truly beautiful establishment.
Upon our arrival into the new apartment, there were a few minor issues that required attention. Immediately, we went to the management who then referred «Andy» to answer our requests. Within a very short period of time, Andy showed up eager to resolve any and all of our issues successfully completing all tasks at hand. He went above and beyond measure to ensure we had a smooth and pleasant arrival into our new second home.

Be aware if your looking to rent an apartment in Avalon stay out of the second floor above the boiler room wow the vibrations from below are extremely disturbing and the humming sound that you will hear will make you very unhappy.
They claimed that the conditions where repaired but it has not actually it has gotten worse
you will lose sleep your bed will vibrate and your head will feel like it will blow up.

I’ve been a resident here for several years. It was a great place to live up until about a year ago. Then their renovations started. The building is now filled with construction workers, filthy and unorganized. Just a few complaints to list…
— We’ve had construction crews in and out of the apartment for months.
— When work is done in the apartment, they leave it a dusty mess — which we then have to clean.
— Aside from my apartment being a dusty mess, the rest of the building is also a disgusting disaster now.
— We awake to the crews yelling and cursing in the hallway every morning.
— The crews doing the construction aren’t the kind of people you want in your home during the day when you’re not home. The language we hear being yelled by these people on a daily basis is deplorable. Definitely not something you want to put up with when you’re ‘home’. We were in an elevator with 2 of these people and had to endure racial and obscene language. It made us feel very uncomfortable.
— The elevator situation is a JOKE and getting worse. The construction crews use the elevators all day. The lines that form to use the elevators are very long at times. This may sound petty, but it’s becoming a major inconvenience. Now the new phase of construction starting today is the elevator renovations. Only 1 elevator will be working at a time. So, we’ll pretty much have to use the stairs for the foreseeable future.
— The noise and people coming in and out have pretty much made it impossible to relax in your HOME.
— The police have been at the building several times to deal with unruly residents. We no longer feel safe here.
— I came home during the day a few weeks ago and there was the AC crew in my apartment. They decided it would be a good idea to lean the metal face of the AC unit against my TV. I could only imagine what else goes on in there when I’m not home.
— Their most recent phase of construction (balcony/​brick work outside) was halted with no explanation. This happened to take place as they were in the middle of the work on my unit. So for about 3 weeks now, the outside portion of the AC unit shows that it’s started to be ripped out and there’s debris all over my balcony. I guess that’s just my problem until they decide they want to finish.
— Workers have been catcalling female residents both in the building and on the streets. Management does NOT care about this.
The list could continue.
Neither Avalon Bay nor the building’s management care about residents. This is an absolutely terrible place to live. DO NOT RENT HERE.

Thinking of renting here? Beware! In three years my rent has gone up $ 700 a month! I’ve been told that next year, I can expect another 15 to 25 percent rent increase on top of the already exorbitant cost of living here at the Avalon. Ask any tenant in the building if this is common practice, and you will hear stories of rents raised as high as 35% in one year, and tenants moving from floor to floor to avoid the rent increases that the Avalon assigns to all residents, year after year, while advertising below market rents to lure in unsuspecting, future tenants. I wish this were the worst of our problems here at the Avalon, but price gouging is just the beginning.
Renovations have posed a tremendous health risk to residents as well. The second floor now has a mice infestation, and because of the build-​up of refuse, the hallways stink of garbage in the morning. What’s worse, is that the amount of whirling dust and lingering debris in the hallways, common areas, and most importantly, in our apartments have caused me and many of my neighbors, (both young and elderly), to get sick repeatedly. Several years ago, I lost 15% of my lung tissue after a massive pulmonary embolism. After the interior of my apartment was renovated, workmen left dust, debris, fingerprints, paint, and spackle stains all over my belongings. I contacted management to tell them my concerns. The cleaning service, which management had promised would arrive each day after construction to mitigate any of my health concerns, did not arrive until three days after my floors and kitchen were ripped out. By that point, the entire interior of my apartment and all of my belongings, including my bedding and furniture, were covered in a layer of dust thick enough to trace letters in. Subsequently, I suffered an acute upper respiratory infection and lost several days of work. After complaining to management, I was promised compensation – a promise that has gone (four months and counting) unfulfilled.
So after ten months of construction, three sick days, several emails, and countless phone calls to management, how have the renovations turned out? Let’s see… I have new air conditioners that don’t work, new windows that don’t open, new shower heads with no water pressure, a new dishwasher that needs to be run twice to clean my dishes, a new floating floor that is pitched and bubbled, new lighting fixtures that aren’t level, paint marks around my new fire sprinklers, and scratches and fingerprints all over my walls. In addition, construction workers have already destroyed the building’s newly painted and carpeted hallways. Why they were painted and carpeted before our apartments were renovated is truly a testimony to the poor planning of renovations here. Last week, management tried to patch up the scratches on the walls and elevator doors with a THIRD paint job, yet again, generating more horrendous fumes for tenants to breathe in as they came home from work.
In addition to health concerns and poor workmanship, renovations have brought the daily intrusions of poorly managed construction workers, misdirected utility men, and incompetent corporate office managers and general contractors crammed into overcrowded elevators, lobbies, hallways and living spaces. Also subsequent to construction, residents have become conditioned to ignore the fire alarm, which blares with regularity and without warning during and after renovation hours. A call to the leasing office in such events, as well as during frequent instances of unanticipated water shut-​offs and lapses in electricity, effects no explanation or compensation for these inconveniences. All of this might be bearable if renovations were improving the standard of living here at the Avalon, rather than justifying outrageous rent hikes and prompting an unprecedented turnover of unhappy residents.
These are situations that with a few questions to residents, will be well-​evidenced through multiple accounts of frustrating and often shocking scenarios here at the Avalon. I would urge anyone shopping for an apartment here to ask any resident in the building about the number of times the Long Beach Police have been called to The Avalon Towers for situations that management could have avoided by enacting better screening and eviction processes!
In short, The Avalon Corporation simply does not care about its residents. The Avalon advertises that living here is «Time well spent», when in actuality, the corporation cares less for how our time is spent, and more for how our money may be misspent by grossly inadequate management. One may argue that the expense of living here is justified by market value of beachfront property. I say, given my experiences, no ocean view can compensate for my health, safety, and peace of mind. Luxury living? An appalling false advertisement considering the Avalon can’t even uphold a basic standard of living.

Since our first posting on Unilocal last summer — prior to the mandatory renovations — our very positive opinion has changed somewhat, but not for the better. Although the excellent and caring building management and staff have all been as responsive to our needs as they can be, within their limited power, the renovation project and questionable results (e.g. poor quality kitchen cabinets and window screens that actually serve to interfere with the beautiful view) has modified our opinion. We sincerely hope that the Avalon Bay Company will be more responsive to the needs of the tenants in our building. Living in this building in Long Beach could and should be wonderful! I have lived at the Avalon for just over a year and so far I have come across at least 13 reasons why it does not make sense for my wife and I to renew our lease. It’s very unfortunate because the building has a lot of potential but is not run very well by management. Please see the below as some examples
1) Currently we have been under going MANDATORY renovations for almost 5 months which is too long
2) We have been given little to no notice when people will be entering our apartment, what they will be doing in our apartment and what we need to do to prepare.
3)We have been asked to move our own furniture/​belongings time and time again yet were never supplied with proper bins and boxes to do so or given proper notice that we had to do this
4) The hallways have been in general disrepair for 5 months.
5) The front door to our apartment was left wide open for several hours by the workers/​cleaners while my wife and I were at work
6) Dust/​Debris is consistently left behind by the workers/​cleaners which has caused an uptick in asthma related issues for me
7) Our bedroom which faces directly east was left without blinds for 4 days including over a weekend in which the sun woke us up at 5:30am each morning
8) When we moved in it was 6 months prior the renovations. Collin did not tell us this would be happening and made it clear to us we needed to put in our own window treatments within a month. We paid $ 2,500 for this only to find out now that the Avalon provides window treatments.
9)Starting balcony repairs during the summer at a building that is directly on the beach makes little to no sense
10) New tenants are being offered up to 6 months of free rent while current tenants have been offered nothing
11) The new air conditioners that were installed barely cool down the apartment
12) Our bedroom screens were not installed for weeks and then were installed improperly leaving us without the functional use of our bedroom windows for almost 2 months
13) They are now coming back in again to fix the bay windows because it was rushed the first time and not done properly

This building is in a great location. It can be a wonderful luxury building.
The management at corporate level makes decisions that do not take tenant convenience into account.
After enduring months of poorly run renovation project, they now plan to close one of the two elevators for one whole month. There is never any consultation with tenants. Phone calls at corporate levels go unanswered.
I have lived in luxury rentals before, this is not one of them.

I’ve been a resident at the Avalon for the past year. My Husband and I decided to splurge a little bit and live in «luxury» building while we are young. There are many great things about the building like big spacious terraces, in unit washer and dryer, spacious apartments, jacuzzi bathtub, big pool and patio. The building is beautiful but unfortunately the management Avalon is very disorganized. 6 month into our lease we had a big shock to our lives: The apartment, which we weren’t fully finished furnishing and decorating, were to go through a major renovations, while we are still living in it.
First it is the windows, which barely open now and have an most hideous cage which obstructs our view (which is what we are paying for). This project was the planned in the dead of winter and every day the workers were planned to work in our apartment they had to reschedule due to the cold weather and unworkable conditions (snow). This is simply poor planning. We were literally on our toes wondering if someone would be walking in to our apartment the next day… that’s not a way to live when your paying 4200 a month. When they went to go replace my bay window they literally scheduled my renovation to happen Friday of memorial day weekend… Thankfully they moved it up. We were left with out screens in our bedroom for over a month during the spring season.
Second: Ripped out our carpet replaced with cheap laminated wood floor, re-​did the kitchen and the bathroom vanities. This happened while we were in the apartment. We were told that we were responsible for moving all of our things out of the living room/​in our china chest/​in the kitchen all of our appliances/​everything in the bathroom. We were forced to go through renovations and yet WE were responsible for moving everything with no help. They only provided us w/​4 bins to help w/​our move, no other boxes… we had to purchase boxes on our own. People w/​animals had to make arrangements for their pets w/​no reimbursement. The workmanship? The bathroom vanities come up too high so any time you open up the medicine cabinet everything falls off the vanity. The floors have air pockets in them so you feel like your stepping in a hole.
third: The balcony’s are currently undergoing renovations so several tenants were told they could not use their Terrace during the summer months which is terrible since that is what we pay for.
fourth: The AC’s: They replaced all AC which don’t work. They cool your apartment for an hour then blow out hot air.
When we asked management for compensation for the invasion and inconveniences they voted against it… however, for a perspective new tenant they were offered 6 weeks rent free but the tenants that have gone through all not even a dime. In fact some tenants received up to 30% in rent increase after all of this.
If this was under better ownership who treated the tenants fairly I would think this place was amazing. Unfortunately while this building is under Avalon management With poor communication i can’t recommend this building even tho it is a beautiful building.

If you are reading this is because you are probably looking for a nice luxury apartment, by the beach. You already know the high rates and you are willing to pay good amount of money in order to have peace, keeping your pet safe, having an elevator, a doorman, parking, no worries about your belongs being stolen from you own apartment while you work.
Do not sign anything, take a moment and «listen to me»
I have been living in Avalon Towers for 2 years now, and I have some advice to you that may change your mind.
I know it will be a long text, for this reason I will write it by subject:
«Oh, I want a brand new apartment, with new appliances, new floor.»
Calm down, it’s not so easy (even thought it should be like this for the price you will be paying.)
Pros:
The appliances are all new, that is amazing
Cons:
They have renovated the apartments a couple months ago, with the cheapest material. In the middle of my living room the floor has a «bubble», also (don’t ask me how) the floors are not even.
They have obligated residents to stay out of their own house during the renovations. They just let constructors that they don’t even know inside your apartment, and it takes WEEKS.
This said, you can imagine: if you work all day long, you need to pay for pet care yourself, because your dog can not be in the apartment at that time even you paying extra a month to have the pet there.
Also, you may pay your pet care for the day scheduled by them, and they never show up.
The worst of all (yes, it get worse): these construction guys are free to take ANYTHING from your apartment and the building has no control of it, it’s a third part company, inside your apartment, seeing your panties, jewelry, and SADLY IN MY CASE STEALING TWICE. And that is only what I had time to realize, I am sure I have lost some other items, but unfortunately I was not able to realize yet. Oh, but the good part: the building tried to «refund» me for the items stolen, but there are still constructions going on and we never know who will be in our apartment.
«OMG, my pets will love, they will have a dog run»
Cons:
Two years I am there, the dog run is always a mess OR closed, so forget it, you won’t use.
«POOL! AMAZING»
Pros: The view, it’s actually beautiful, that area is amazing
Cons: You will use max 2 months, I am not sure if it is a good idea to pay extra money for it. ALSO, I just want to mention that I don’t think its heated at all. It’s like going into the ocean, in February
«I can have a Doorman 24÷7»
Cons: There has to be something wrong with their employment contract. Doorman changes every week, when we do have. Several times I would wake up at 5am, go for a run in the boardwalk, come back at 6am, take the dog for walk, leave for work and didn’t see anyone in the door. Anyone was free to get in our apartment. I don’t feel safe. There are two doormen’s that are more than a year there. Everyone else is new, they never last.
«I can have a gym!!!»
Oh well, the gym is pretty nice, no complains, but don’t believe it’s free, there is a annual tax you got to pay for it.
«Long Beach view»
Pros: It’s amazing.
Cons: No cons. It would be cons if we had the building management in the beach
«Elevator»
Ah, that elevator, such a nice building and such an old elevator, when you have an elevator to use. Due the «renovations» it was impossible to use the elevators during the day, and when you could use they were destroyed and stinks. Looks like now they will improve it, HOWEVER if you leave in the 11 floor. Be prepared to do some exercise.
«I can have my own park spot»
Oh well… first of all, it’s also NOT free, of course. In addition there has times that the garage door was closed during weeks — YES WEEKS — and random people were taking your spot. The building would take no action that said (THAT HAPPENED TO ME), figure out somewhere else to park, even thought you pay extra for that spot. Hopefully when this happens you won’t be in a rush.
«I don’t need to put extra deposit in the beging»
Keep in mind that when your contract is up they will raise your rent A LOT (20%+), its kinda crazy actually. They will give you some random options: 7 months (you still need to pay for the whole year amenities fee), 13 months, etc.
I sincerely hope it helps you to make a smart decision.

I have been a resident since March 2015 and love it here. Great apartment (recently upgraded) beautiful building, great staff and of course, the Atlantic Ocean right off my balcony. The amenities; pool and outdoor lounge and cooking area, fitness center, party room and library are always impeccable and constantly maintained. The lobby area is Ritz Carlton in Long Beach and every one of the staff here goes the extra mile to make you feel like family (in the nice way). Special shout out to Victoria, Karen, Kevin, George, Andre and Tyler who have helped my transition to apartment living a wonderful experience.
