St Luke’s Episcopal Church

Traditional and open. Gay and straight. Old and young. Caucasian, black, latino and hispanic. Main worship on Sundays. 8AM and 10AM services in English. 12:15PM in Spanish, Other smaller services throughout the year. We will be undergoing a remodel in the next few years. Clergy are welcoming and available.

Felt like coming home. I hadn’t been to an episcopal service in years. Was very welcoming and I plan to go back. Communion was just like I remembered and the sermon was good.

A perfect service my first time there — beautifully orchestrated, every person warm and lively, and every last thing entirely relate-​able — I am still a little overcome by how GOOD it was. The service (prayers, hymns, readings) was completely printed for each person to have — no rummaging around in books — and was completely bilingual english/​spanish. The guitar, piano, and organ accompanied soloists and congregation and everyone sang to the beautiful up tempo and easy to sing music. The sermon by Ranjit was beautiful in its message and delivery (translated into spanish by a parishioner although Ranjit himself spoke spanish fluently). Most amazing was the FULL HOUSE of diversity and how much love you could feel. The priests were funny, kind, thoughtful and inclusive. I would highly recommend this church to anyone who needs a fresh connection.

Three things I look for in a church: a diverse congregation, no «hellfire and brimstone,» and great music. St. Luke’s has all three.
Once a month, they have a taize service, which is music and meditation… if you don’t like traditional church services but also aren’t a fan of «praise”-style worship, or if you’re just looking for something different, I highly recommend checking this out. It’s intimate and quiet, and I leave feeling very relaxed and peaceful.
The Sunday services are fairly traditional, but more welcoming than a lot of churches I’ve been to. When everyone stands up to say their «peace be with you”-s, brace yourself for a full 2 minutes worth of smiling faces… in addition to meeting the people next to you and immediately in front of and behind you, you’ll be shaking hands with people across the aisle, the clergy, and folks who hiked 3 rows down just to come say hello.
Episcopalians are traditionally a pretty liberal bunch — so if you are homophobic, xenophobic, racist, think people who practice religions other than Christianity are going to Hell, or wish George Bush could have another 4 years, you probably will not like this church… but it might do you some good to come anyhow. I love that St. Luke’s does things like invite an Islamic scholar to come talk about what Muslims really believe and practice, conduct services in Spanish, support GLBT members, and celebrate Kwanzaa. This is truly a community that believes we are all God’s children.
And the music… there are some amazing singers in the choir, and the organist lets loose after the service with a Bach voluntary, or something equally impressive! There are frequently guest musicians — a brass ensemble for Easter, a cello, a pianist…
This is a great community, and a wonderful church. I am happy to have found it, and hope that you’ll pay us a visit!

It’s Sunday, so why not write a review about a church?
My good friend invited me here because the play he wrote was going to be featured here as a part of Black History month. At the last minute he asked me to close the production by singing a song. The play deals with the issues of HIV/​AIDS in minority communities and the church’s response to people dealing with the disease.
Get ready here comes the sermon part of this review…
There is a new HIV infection occurring somewhere in the world every 6 seconds… can you imagine that?
African-​Americans account for 50% of the new HIV infections
Black and Latino women are one of the fastest growing populations of newly diagnosed HIV infections.
Young adults between the ages of 13 – 25 are the second largest age group of new HIV infections.
OK, I’ll get off my soapbox now, but get tested… OK?
So the event took place in the parish hall, and boy did it bring back memories for me. The checkered and speckled linoleum floor, metal folding chairs and tables, large coffee pots and styrofoam cups, and the big kitchen that was staffed with the older church women. Women in the church kitchen always looked happy to me, don’t know why that is. Maybe they’re happy to be doing something for others.
Anyhow, all the church folk were standing around, chatting, sipping coffee and some were standing in line for food. Another person in the play who was sitting next to me was taking in the scene and said
«People will come to church for the food and for the love.»
The people at St. Luke’s certainly made us feel welcome, there was a lot of love. The fried chicken lunch and complimentary Red Rooster hot sauce wasn’t so bad either.
