St. Mary Medical Center

I was brought to the ER via ambulance last night so I can’t say much about wait times but the staff I encountered were nice and funny (more dark humor so I can see where people may take it the wrong way) I ended up being placed in a room and asked the same 10 questions by 5 different people which was entered incorrectly anyways. There was a RN assigned to our room who made sure to keep checking up on me and had the volunteer staff bring me and my fiancé water. My only complaint was that the doctor said I was getting food to see if I could hold it down and because we had been there 6+ hours and no one ever brought anything even after I mentioned I was hungry. It seems as I was placed in the same room as Maddy M. And the Diarrhea family she mentioned, to which I can only describe her as drug seeking behavior.

One of the worst experiences of my life.
I woke up feeling extremely nauseous while experiencing severe pain in my abdomen, and all over my back. As I got to work my coworkers noticed I did not look okay and within the half hour the nausea got worse. My coworkers had called backup and sent me home. I was so grateful, I couldn’t work a 10 hour shift like that. I went home and the pain only got worse, unbearable and unusual, so I came to the conclusion that it became an emergency and rushed to the ER.
Slowly I made my way through the stations where my name was called. I registered myself, sat back at the waiting room, then in the same waiting room for my pressure checked. There were very few people in the waiting room, so I imagined I would be seen soon. I told everyone I encountered that my pain level was at 10 if not higher, the whole reason I was in that room of emergency was because of how intolerable the pain became. I was never offered water, any pain medication, and I had to ask for a blanket because I began shivering insanely. If you looked around the room you’d think the girl crying in the corner freezing while sweating at the same time, needs help.
I was taken inside to be weighed and «seen» by a medical practitioner. Literally she looked at me and asked me why I was there that day. After that I was sent to a smaller waiting room where there was a family of 6 alongside their father whom had diarrhea. DIARRHEA. Poor man kept yelling at his concerned family that he did not have an emergency and did not need to be there. As I waited, the pain kept increasing, which I didn’t know was possible. I once again told the nurses around me that my pain was a severe 10. I kept being asked my name and told I was next, but time kept passing.
The nurse gave me a paper with a list of procedures I would be going through that day. The wait to get an ultrasound was very long, I again let nurses around me know that my pain was never acknowledged and was the main reason I was in the same room as them. Again, ignored, I awaited for someone to shout my name from a different station. I got placed in a room where I was told I would get an IV placed into my vein. I awaited almost an hour for that IV to be placed into my vein. But the wait for a woman to have me sign a bill did not take nearly as long. She had the audacity to tell me I was responsible for the entire bill since I had not brought in my insurance card. How silly of me to forget when my mind was all over the place due to the excruciating pain. She maintained a rude and hostile tone with me. I said «I have not been given ANYTHING, how can I pay for something I haven’t received?» «This says you have been given the following» I had not been given anything but an old blanket and she did not care.
After the ultrasound, (which was painful) I was sent back to that same room. I vomitted 3 times since I had arrived. I saw nurses walking around everywhere, laughing with each other and taking it easy. I was still at level 10 pain, I couldn’t believe no one had asked how I was doing or if I needed any water. I started crying because the pain was the only thing I could think about. A doctor came to see me for less than 2 minutes, I kid you not. The first thing he did was make a very rude comment, and told me it wasn’t important enough to be admitted to the main hospital but I could look for another place to get surgery. He left and I laid there crying in pain. I called a nurse for about 10 minutes. I started shouting louder, and no one would come check on whom was shouting for a nurse. I yelled «Please, nurse, I’m in pain, I need a nurse» I didn’t know what to do. I got up and looked for a nurse. There was 3 only 10 feet away from my room. «I’ve been in severe pain since I got here, I need help» a nurse came in and hooked me up to an IV, gave me morphine, and I fell asleep. When I woke up I threw up again, and the pain was still there. I waited another long time and I started calling a nurse again. No one would come help me. I got up and found someone. I told them I was still in a lot of pain. I could have died in that room and no one would have noticed. I once again threw up and a nurse walked in and gave me pain medication through my IV. It was 4 times stronger than morphine, she said it would make me sleep and when I awoke I could be released. Indeed, this happened, but I regretted stepping foot through that ER entrance. It would have been worth the trip to a hospital 50 miles away (El Monte) where my health would have been taken seriously, and the first thing they would have done was help control my pain level! I would have been admitted to the main hospital seeing as my pain was so severe, and would have been watched by a nurse checking in on the level of my pain. It’s unbelievable how careless St. Mary’s medical center is. If you love someone, don’t let them go here and risk them DYING with a staff like THIS ONE! SHAME ON ST. MARYS!!!

Great service from the moment I walked into the emergency room to the admitting Department every nurse and staff member that I met at this hospital was nice and helpful was a little skeptical about coming here but I had to because it’s the only place that my insurance covered will definitely be my new hospital of choice thanks for the great service and big shout out to my night nurse Leo and day nurse Erin

Great staff, it was my insurance that had do my procedure here, thank god! It was a fast check in. I called ahead made admitting appointment. I got in the nurses and technicians were generous with there time explaining everything and making me feel all would be successful. After they gave me time to recover and the prays were thoughtfully given by a sister. Nurse Sandra was very attentive. Brain and Matt were Wonderful. Monine the X-​ray tech was great too. Thanks guys. Thank you St. Mary staff and all.

This place is not clean and is about as inviting as an un-​flushed toilet in a gas station bathroom off the interstate highway. Don’t get sick or injured near here because you might be forced to walk in seeking medical attention at this hospital that apparently lacks proper staff to clean to first world standards.

I brought my husband to the ER with extremely high blood pressure, chest pressure and shortness of breath. They got him into the ER within a few minutes and I cannot imagine being better cared for than we both were during the process of stabilizing, diagnosing and treating him.
Everyone (and I literally mean EVERYONE: from the admitting staff, to the nurses, the doctors, the volunteers, the security staff, the cafeteria folks, the housekeeping team) were unbelievably caring and attentive. Ask a question that someone doesn’t know the answer to? They’d say «Well I don’t know the answer to that but let me find out or find someone who does know.» And they WOULD! Every time. And with a smile on their faces too. (Mind you, my husband and I are the kind of people who say always say please and thank you (and try to smile too) and we genuinely feel grateful for the services people provide to us.)
Once he was stabilized, my husband was admitted to the telemetry unit (critical care) for an overnight stay while the cardiac team continued to evaluate him and determine the correct diagnosis and treatment path for discharge. The room was pleasant and comfortable with adequate space for visitors, etc. It also had a nice flat screen LG tv with a wide variety of channel viewing options. And more than anything — once again — the staff were absolutely incredible in their kind, attentive care both for my husband, myself and our daughter.
I truly have nothing but praise for the entire team of people who helped us in all the myriad ways you need help when you’re in a frightening — potentially life-​threatening — situation, and entirely out of your normal environment. When I needed to get something to eat and asked how to find the hospital cafeteria, rather than give me directions, a volunteer personally escorted me to the cafeteria! The above and beyond approach to care that we experienced at St. Mary’s is truly remarkable and sets the bar for all other hospital experiences.

I am very thank full to the staff that has been taking care of my dad in the ICU except for Marcy! Ay! AY! Marcy or Mercy your attitude lady has a lot to say about you. very rude. may be you should consider taking some bed side training or if you are so miserable give up your job. and leave room for those who really would appreciate your job.

The waiting game is bad and yet so slow. People has to fake pain and tears to actually be seen faster. Which is so depressing.

The worst. Just called and the lady was so rude 3 105 407 676 !! Just rude I couldn’t believe it.
I was a patient their yesterday.
All of the nurses are so rude. And not helpful I was left in a room for hours got their at 8 am and wasn’t seen till 3pm no water no food. I kept asking for water and they would never come back ! Ridiculous .
Overpacked I sat in the hallway for hours before I got to sit in a room with a bad foot injury can’t walk .
I needed to pee in a cup for them and the my nurse left me in the bathroom in the wheelchair and never came back nor help me and I hurt my foot more trying to walk to the door and open it and ask for help and no one was around for a minute or two .
I also had a anxiety and panic attack for not getting water I just blew up and I started crying bc I was sitti their for hours unseen blood everywhere an Icepack and nothing no water no meds nothing and they laughed .and still didn’t give me water.
I should of walked out but still waited.
Didn’t leave till 5pm
Never going here in my life again.
I just wanted my test results bc they had just called and unfortunelty I missed the call so I was just returning it to get my test results they had left a voicemail to call back. Rude.

I am working through some grief, which brings me to this review.
In December of last year, I visited St. Mary Medical Center secondary to an inevitable abortion. To backtrack, my husband and I have tried for several years to become pregnant, and we were ECSTATIC when I found out I was pregnant and CRUSHED when I miscarried.
I went in with classic signs of a threatened abortion and was treated very well by the RN staff (triage and bedside) and by the MD who saw me. I wish I could remember the name of one particular employee who immediately rushed me to a bed, but I can’t. I believe it was a CNA, but I am not sure. He was a nice and made me feel as comfortable as I could in that situation.
However, my so-​far-​so-​good stay was interrupted by an US Tech with pink hair and a not-​so-​nice attitude. Firstly, my husband was disallowed from being in the US room with me, even though I asked that he be included in the US experience because I was terrified of what might be discovered. He was left alone in my hospital room racked with worry, although he could have experienced the US with me per Dignity Health policy. During my US I repeatedly asked if everything was okay, only to be left with short answers like «you have to wait until the doctor reviews the results.» I understand that an US technician cannot give results to patients because it is not within their scope of practice, but I was terrified and crying. No one should be ignored when they cry in that situation. I would have appreciated any show of «humandkindess» at that time (a pat on the shoulder, a look of sympathy, etc), but I got a cold «wait until the doctor reviews the results.» I also asked to hear the heartbeat on the US machine, and she denied my request. I was later told by the MD that the heartbeat had slowed to 68 at the time of the US, but I would give ANYTHING to have heard that heartbeat however imperfect. That was my only opportunity to hear the heartbeat of my baby, and my request was ignored. It was the coldest experience that I have ever had with a healthcare professional, and the worst day of my life.
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner, and I worked for Dignity Health (Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield) for 6 years as a RN. Currently, I work as a FNP in the field of OBGYN, and I am in the same situation with grieving mothers often. I hold hands with my patients, I hug them, I cry with them, I support them, and I am kind to them. I really wished that I was treated in the same manner that I treat my patients.
I am not asking that anyone is fired or disciplined. I am asking that you speak with your employees further about the importance of humankindness. In the healthcare field, we sometimes see people at their absolute worst, and when they are going through their hardest of times. If you can’t be a kind person, this is not your field.

I went to do a check up I’m 33 weeks pregnant and I had abdominal pain so I decided to check this place out. So I got took into the labor and delivery room it was okay till I started asking questions and they gave me a weird dirty look and laugh there way out. That when I knew I’m NOT going to have my Son here. THE NURSES ARE RUDE, and not Helpful ! Never coming here again.

I went here for a scheduled surgery, there were annoying hiccups along the way, don’t get me wrong, but I think a lot of that was due to the massive amount of reno work being done. The staff, the nurses in particular were all very kind. It was one of the better experinces I have had at a hospital, and that is saying a lot. The hospital itself is really old, but neat to look at inside, and the food was… hospital quality, but overall I was happy with the care I received.

Best ER in long beach, yes it’s busy, but you get the best care… I went here with my sister who was very ill, the Emergency room doctors, nurses and techs were wonderful… Thanks…

If I can rate 0 stars, I would. This place is completely horrible. The wait is too long, even though it’s not busy or barely any people in the lobby. When it’s an emergency, they don’t take care of you. They will always find a way to keep you waiting for hours or to spend the night at the hospital no matter your condition. All they want is your money. If you was to spend the night at St. Mary Hospital, there will always be multiple people coming in every hour or every 30mins taking your blood more than usual leaving you bruises etc. And most of the time these people will be students, or often those that are young and are in training. Doctors and nurses here don’t do a good job at all. They’ll leave you by yourself waiting and making you wonder when they’re going to come back and check up on you. If I was extremely sick and was in need of an emergency and St. Mary Hospital was the only choice? I’d rather LEAVE MYSELF TO DIE than let them «take care» of me.

Longest wait ever to see a doctor. I came in at around 1:30am and its now 4:45am and still waiting to see a doctor. Came back to edit post and another hour down. I asked when I came in how long I would wait and was told a little over an hour. Wow this is too damn long. OK it’s now 5:46 and I asked the registration how many people still and supposedly I’m in a room. But I’m still waiting on the waiting area. Really what is wrong with this place.

This was a positive, quick easy customer experience and I received great care from top notch, caring pros.
A heavy bronze statue fell off an upper bookshelf on my head. Lots of blood. The wound was small — the bump large & painful. I put on my big girl pants, took some otc meds & headed to a business meeting.
The dull headache increased as the day went on & I set out for the Downtown Long Beach urgent care at 6 pm. By the time I found parking, the one on Ocean was closing, and the one on Atlantic across from Vons said they couldn’t do much for me — go to an ER.
So head & neck pain escalating to nausea, I go to St. Mary’s Medical Center the closest ER. Despite warnings from a Belmont Shores resident.
The signage to get into the ER was confusing. I went into a structure on Atlantic and parked but all access doors/​routes to the ER were locked. So I had to leave and circle the block to the ER surface parking lot off 11^th.
The waiting room is clean and basic with a loud flat screen TV and plenty of magazines. The restroom had seen a lot of action. There was an nice exhibit of B&W photos of historic Long Beach.
About 15 people from all walks of life were waiting at 7:45 pm when I arrived. The waiting room head count was as many as 30 & as low as one during my 75 minutes in & out of there.
Admission was quick & easy, because you don’t have the insurance conversation until after you see the doctor. Staff care was extremely efficient, professional & genuinely caring.
They moved me quickly through initial processing at the front window, an intake medical interview, a medical exam, a business intake/​insurance/​financial conversation/​paperwork signing, a CT scan, return to admin. for signatures, an injection of an anti-​inflammatory & a norco pill. My neck started to feel better quickly following the injection.
Nice surprise! The entire process flow was 1.25 hours. They moved fast and they got the job done. I had an excellent customer experience. Sure there were a few characters there, but most were average folks & families with sick children.
The doctor advised I did not have a severe head injury, though my head & neck would be sore for a few days. My one beef with them is that I noted in the intake that I also had a fibromyalgia diagnosis.
This auto immune central nervous system issue causes one to experience much greater pain from injuries than the average person.
It is a real, physical condition, not a psych issue.
They wrote me up as having a severe tension headache aka Cephalgia & musculoskeletal pain with no mention of the head injury. Huh?
Perhaps they fell under the spell of big pharma’s BS sound bite advertising trance that fibro is the result of
«overactive nerves.» That pitch for pills totally mimimizes the complexity of this painful, frustrating, life altering, degenerative condition.
I had to knock off a star for this invalidating discharge diagnosis & because they didn’t give me pain meds to go home with. Perhaps it was my mistake for not asking, but I was having short term memory & cognitive issues. I kept forgetting my I.D., purse & personal items every time I moved and I couldn’t retain information they gave me.
The «sore» pronosis was an understatement. It took 5 days for my cognitive faculties to come back to normal & for the excruciating headache to diminish. OTC pain meds prescribed did absolutely nothing.
Fortunately, I had some Tylenol codeine around from past dental work which got me through until the pain finally subsided.

Been her two times with my 86 year old father. Both times we have had an absolutely horrible experience.
In the ER the doctors and nurses sit in the glass box and ignore you and keep you waiting for really long periods of time.
My dad has a DNR and they argued with me about it and make me feel like I didn’t care about him for not approving care that goes against his wishes.
LAst night my father had a CT scan, X-​ray, and ultrasound at 9pm-​it is 3pm the next day I have not seen a doctor and no one has gone over his results with me. They have him strapped in his bed and finally they told me they don’t know when the doctor will be in. No compassion. Horrible care. We will never come here again. Very shocking for a catholic hospital to show such little care and compassion for their patients. Very disappointing!

This review is regarding «Labor and Delivery.» I am truly blessed to have been led to St. Mary Hospital. My experience with every doctor and nurse and staff member was exceptional. There were times that I had to wait over an hour at my OBGYN because there were so many pregnant women. lol But hands down, everyone was so humble.
I delivered a 9 lb 10 oz baby boy vaginally with encouragement and inspiration. The nurses, doctors and staff were the kindest and most humble across the board; from prenatal care to postpartum. I got my own private room after delivery which was really nice. Everything was clean. I had gestational diabetes and the «Sweet Success» program and everyone involved were so sweet. I kinda miss going there just to see them.
The nurse Correa practitioner at Reproduction Services and my OBGYN (Dr. Emamian) who also delivered my baby were the best. In the delivery room, nurse Colleen was so friggin’ cool, even the interns were amazing. I decided to stay with St. Mary for pediatrics. So great. If you want to know what a humble and caring experience feels like, then I recommend St. Mary.
They all know what they’re doing and handle an OVERWHELMING amount of people. I really don’t know how they do it. I would probably flip out. I’ve experienced medical staff who had half the load the staff here had and acted so unkind.
People here really do care. All my time and the drive from South Bay to Long Beach was all worth it. God bless them all.

This time I was here on a short stay basis. I got released same day and wanted to point out once again that my experience and stay here was excellent. Nurses truly care and my doctor took care of me well. It is a busy hospital, easy to find your way around and it is for the most part pretty clean.
The reason for one less star was because the service at The admitting department. Seems service was faster and more efficient there last time I was here (one year ago). Although the staff at admitting was apologetic, I think service in that department needs improvement.
Overall, a good hospital.

Whenever your in need of an ER, this is the place to come. I’ve been coming here since my college days (in the late 90’s). I don’t even live in Long Beach anymore, but will travel the distance to come here. I’ve even had family and friends come to this location and they all left in good spirits. Why? The staff is friendly, attentive, and you leave with a peace of mind knowing your in good hands.
