4 stars for prices, 5 for food! They’re a bit on the pricier side especially for their specialty rolls(around $ 16 a pop) which means less food, boooooooo. Their appetizers are also around $ 8. Friendly service, had a good time on the patio. The Crispy Yummy appetizer is very good(wonton chip with chopped tuna, tomatoes, etc.) and the sushi rolls that stood out to me are the Macadamia and the roll with the crispy onions on top(sorry, don’t remember the name). Their menu is HUGE. They also have noodles and poke bowls if you want something other than sushi. Kind of hard to decide!

They have remodeled yet again. The sushi chefs always great you and wish you well on your way out. The udon soup is pretty good but the best shrimp tempura roll I’ve ever had comes from Yens !

I bought a Groupon($ 40 credit for $ 20FTW) therefore a friend and I went to get dinner here on Saturday night. I got the poke bowl, which was very tasty, although the serving of fish was a little skimpy. You get to choose a base(white rice, brown rice, or salad), fish(I salmon, tuna, yellow tail, some other choices), sauce, and toppings(cucumber, onions, scallions, seaweed salad). There are also some additional toppings for an extra cost — such as avocado. My friend and I also got a salmon, avocado, and asparagus roll, which was pretty tasty and had a great fish to rice ratio. This isn’t the most authentic Japanese food place and the portion size was a little on the small side, but I still enjoyed my food. The service is also very good. On 2nd St, you can choose from Sushi Ai, Sushi on Fire, and Yen Sushi. I think this is the best sushi place on 2nd St when taking into account the quality, price, and service. Definitely check Groupon of Living Social to see if there are any deals!

Great Sushi and service. I think they are now the best Sushi on 2nd Street for sure. They have a talented kitchen that always excels in making the best sushi dishes. The wait staff is friendly and attentive too. I recommend this restaurant.

The food is fine, nothing special, which would warrant maybe 3 stars, but the service is unreasonably slow. The restaurant is almost empty and it took 10 min just to order drinks. If they trained their service staff better(i.e. don’t only carry one thing out at a time, you can carry an iced tea, and a check:)) they might be a more worthwile place, but for the time being the other sushi place down second street is better.

Snatched a groupon deal $ 25 for $ 40 since it isn’t every day you see one for a nice sushi place. In the end though when we paid tax and tip, it was still a $ 20 per person meal. We liked that this place has a lot of unique options we hadn’t seen done before at other sushi places. Down side: The sushi was kind of disappointing for me. Specifically the omakase, which besides decent tempura and salad and etc, consisted of mostly tuna pieces that were eh and as another reviewer mentioned, room temperature fish. We also tried the yoda roll which had a delightful crunch. And another roll I can’t remember. The portion size is great and the taste was not bad, but the fish, which to me is what seals the deal, wasn’t good enough to tempt me back. Average place. I’ll stick to my other sushi places.

I was always passing by this place and my friend recommended it, so I gave it a try with 3 of my friends. Overall, the experience at Yen was amazing! Location: Close to the Belmont Shore, right in the middle of 2nd St. with other cool places to go to after eating. We were able to find parking on the residential area behind the restaurant. Also, I have heard they re-innovated d the whole place and the interior was stylish and modern to enjoy the dinner. Food: Our group ordered 3 Rolls, 1 Entrée, and 2 Appetizers. They have so many special rolls to choose from. We ordered Balcony Roll(albacore, spicy tuna, & crunch onions), Double Tuna Roll(Escolor on top of spicy tuna roll) and Green Train Roll(Shrimp tempura, crabmeat, and avocado on top). We had good choice of the rolls and they were fresh and delicious. Spicy Garlic Edamame for the Appetizer was spicy for me but my friends loved it. Also, Crispy rice on Spicy Tuna is highly recommendable. My friend who couldn’t eat raw fish ordered Sukiyaki Bibimbop(hot stone pot dish with rice, vegetables, and beef) and it was superb. We also had their Japanese Sapporo Draft Beers to go with dinner and it was cold and fresh and made our dining experience way more fun. They did have a variety selection of cold sake. Service: Sushi Chefs were sooo friendly and accommodating! Our server was also amiable and attentive. You do need to let them know if you want to get your food in certain order or if you would like to get everything at the same time. We addressed what we want to have first when ordering and what we do and don’t like on our rolls, and they surely adjusted our needs. The service overall was wonderful. It was an outstanding combination of good food and service. My friends and I had a great time eating here. If you have not eaten in this restaurant, I highly recommend you try it out! :)

Nice sushi restaurant atmosphere on 2nd st. Great for date night. Seat on patio to watch strollers and inside is cozy modern. The basics are excellent like spicy tuna roll etc. the hot dinners are very good too. Feels very clean which is important to me. Good sake, wine, beer. Good happy hour too.

I have to upgrade these guys one star as they have really upped their game. The restaurant has been remodeled and looks really good. The service has been great and the staff is now very attentive and friendly. I will have to say that it is a completely different experience now than what it was like last year. My wife and I have been back multiple times now. If the experience continues to be as good may have to updated the stars to 5. We will be back.

Small gem in the middle of town… we were looking to get sushi and accidentally stumbled onto this place, which wasn’t crowded or too noisy. As it got later in the night the crowd grew. The fish seemed pretty fresh, you can usually tell right off the back on how the quality will be by the fish itself. The portions were pretty good size for being rolls. The menu was pretty big and can be overwhelming but the staff is very friendly and will assist in answering any questions you have. We ordered 4 different plates and surprisingly the bill wasn’t as high as I anticipated. I will definitely come back to this place in the future. The parking is in the back and is small so it can be kind of inconvenient. There is additional parking in a lot next door but you have to pay.

Good little spot on none other than Second Street. Had the Chicken Udon and my friend had the crispy sushi rolls :) I liked her food more than my mom my own and vice versa haha. It was good overall though, good good good :) :)

It appears management has changed and so has happy hour, and the quality /presentation. The special Sashimi didn’t used to be drowning in sauce. It was still tasty but really didn’t need that much sauce. Still like sitting outside and people watching.

Recently I’ve started ordering chirashi sashimi bowls at sushi restaurants and in doing so, I’ve been able to get a better sense of which the freshness and price point. Dinner at Yen left me unfulfilled and slightly disappointed. For $ 24, the chirashi sashimi bowl at Yen in downtown Long Beach comes with hot miso soup and mystery sashimi because the menu did not specify. I distinctly remember the seaweed salad, salmon, yellowtail, and small serving of tobiko. Refer to the picture for a visual of what is offered. The temperature of the sashimi was more room temperature than refrigerated, which made me skeptical, as it had been a hot afternoon the day I went. I was certainly full from the meal, but not too impressed with the quality. Overall, it definitely feels like watered down Japanese food for non-Asians.

I haven’t been to Yen in years, I guess things have changed a bit. They charge about $ 10+ for almost any sushi roll. Their menu was super confusing and all over the place, so I ordered thinking I was paying one price for one roll, but that was only if it were an add-on. Service is okay. They don’t really check on you. I expected to be full from two sushi rolls(8 pieces each), and was not. At my other local go to two sushi rolls is filling, even when eating simple rolls. My mom looooved her beef bowl, so there is that.

This restaurant is amazing. The sashimi was the freshest I’ve had in a long time. We definitely got lucky with the GroupOn deal. The prices originally are like any other good quality sushi restaurants. Always a fan of great service. There wasn’t much of a wait for a Saturday night. The gentleman and lady serving us were on point. The drinks came in time, they brought our food out little by little knowing it was just the two of us eating. We had the Salmon sashimi, Salmon Tempura Roll, the Baked Lobster Roll with Soy Wrap and OFCOURSE the Miso Soup. Their miso soup had the most tofu and seaweed in it, other places I’ve been to only have 2 pieces of tofu and like 3 strips of seaweed. And the Tiramisu dessert was amazeballs!!! So gooood, except my boyfriend at it all before I can take one last bite. :(

Went there today for first time… And last time! My wife and I love sushi and have recently moved to this area. Wanted to see if this would be a good local spot for us. It is not going to work out. We ordered two rolls. One they call 911 and one shrimp tempura crunch roll. Both tasted very bland. No flavor. The shrimp didn’t taste good and may have been frozen shrimp at that. Service was okay but some of their practices, that we observed, really turned us off. They had rows of wasabi and ginger cups lined up on top of the sushi bar pre-made under plastic. The plastic looked pretty old. Practically every sushi place, or should I say every GOOD sushi place, we’ve been to makes these up with the order so it’s not just sitting around. One of the servers dropped wasabi from one of the cups and than picked it up and just put it back into the cup. At least she used the plastic wrap to pick it up though. Another thing that turned us off was that the chef was wearing plastic gloves… I can not stand food handlers that use plastic gloves as a sanitary shield. The reason I can’t is that the gloves are worn for everything they touch, which is exactly what this chef did. He touched the food, the counter, the doors, the equipment, you name it and he touched it with the gloves on and went right back to handling the food. The only thing those gloves were protecting were his hands from getting dirty. Throw away the gloves and wash your hands!!! We won’t be going back.

Came here because we had a groupon deal. The server was really attentive and engaging. We had the Hawaiian roll and spare Rib roll. I also had mango mochi, nothing special but the plating was pretty. I really liked the spare rib roll a lot. I would eat here for full price, really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I like this place better than the other sushi place on 2nd street.

Yummy sushi! Sushi is one of my favorite things to eat. As long as it’s good! And this sushi is on point. The y have enough of a variety and the normal sushi items to keep you happy. Watch out for deals on Living Social and Groupon because you’ll get a chance to try them out a little cheaper. If that is not your thing you can always go down to the Shore during the summer when they have the Stroll Belmont of whatever it’s called. It happens about once a month during the summer so if you miss one just keep your eyes open for another one. The staff is super friendly and if you eat here enough they start to learn your favorites and will totally give you the hook up. I like to go in during the week and early evening when I can get a table inside on a cold day and sit in the back and read my book and just enjoy my sushi. The owner is there most of the time and is really nice. Go Yen go!
