Elite Event: Summer of Sushi at Fushia

I had a great time at my first elite event and met lots of new people and got lots of tips of where to eat! I now have a long list to work my way through and cannot wait!
This restaurant is 5 mins from my place, so I loved giving one of the new local places a try. It did not disappoint! Once it got going, the food kept coming until I was full! I particularly enjoyed the shrimp tempura and pork buns!
They were very generous with the tiger beers, I bet they had a lot of recycling by the end of the event! I look forward to trying out this restaurant again and getting in on the amazing happy hour offers! Roll on the next event…
I managed to score a Unilocal water bottle, which I tested out at the beach at the weekend, I love a freebie!

Had a blast at this LIC event. I had fit in Smorgasburg Queens’ opening day earlier and was able to hike it over since It was a short walk.
As was explained to us, when we arrived, Fushia is a restaurant that happens to operate in the hotel, not a hotel restaurant. That said, they do have LCL entrance leading to the lobby of the hotel. It’s definitely a great looking space with an abundance of tables suitable for the lunch and dinner crowd.
As hosts, their menu consisted of a slew of Asian dishes including sushi. Everyone who came also has their fill of Tiger Beer, as many as one can drink. Props to the sponsor for these!
The lineup included mango salad which was crisp and refreshing, fried shrimp tempura ball which was a delightful treat, a complement of sushi and sashimi pieces (definitely adequate), pork belly bun which also hit the spot, ramen (these did the trick), as were their dumplings (meaty and juicy).
Definitely give them a try. I know i will the next time I’m in LI. Mega props for Fushia to break into LIC this way. Big ups to Team Unilocal Queens for helping to put this one together.

I really would never have found this place if it wasn’t for this Elite event, which was on a rare Saturday (!!!) to boot. The location really is kind of hidden by the hotel right next door, and the only thing that helped was the fold-​up sign right in front — certainly not something you’d really stumble upon in this area, Fushia would have to be the destination.
The mango salad they served to start things off was very refreshing and definitely much-​needed on a steamy Saturday. The sushi/​sashimi dish was really spot-​on as the fish tasted really fresh and well-​prepared. The dumplings were phenomenal, and my real favorite was the ramen. Too often I find the broth to be too salty, or too bland, with the perfect in-​between so hard to find (that kind of rhymed straight up Goldilocks style: D). The noodles were cooked nicely and the pork that was used was really good as well. The other star of the show was the pork bun that was sandwiched by an incredibly fluffy bun/​wrap.
It would’ve been nice if the staff explained the dishes a bit more as they served, but I suppose they were on the chalkboard menu for all to see. The ventialation in the men’s bathroom also needs to be fixed or improved, it felt like I walked into a sauna with a B.O. air freshener in there. Either way, service was efficient and there was plenty of Tiger beer on hand! Thanks to Jando and Fushia for hosting us!

Sushi and Tiger beer. A nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Fushia restaurant is located in Long Island City about a few blocks away from the Court Square subway stop.
Upon arriving, we were greeted with Tiger beer. As I was getting my drink on, servers were coming around with an array of Asian inspired light bites. Mango salad, rock shrimp, dumplings, a sushi platter, a pork bun, and ramen. Out of all these dishes, I’d have to say the dumplings were the best.
The atmosphere of this restaurant is quite modern. Wood paneling, large benches along the sides, and a bar towards the right of the entrance. I also noticed that this restaurant is pretty big and spacious.
It was nice seeing everyone and meeting new people.

In the middle of nowhere in LIC, where it’s mostly hotels and factories there’s this little gem called Fushia. A well-​organized event by both Unilocal Queens and Fushia Owner we got to try different options of their menu or as I like to call it the tour of Asia. The weather was perfect and a few blocks down it was the grand opening of Smorgasburg: Queens. What a great day for the borough of Queens.
My favorites off the menu were the rock shrimp, a bit of spice yet it was perfection!
Roasted pork belly on a sweet flower bun, if I wasn’t so full I would’ve eaten one more of those.
Ramen soup — not too salty.
The Tiger Beer Lager was perfect for summer, never heard of it before but I am sure I will keep an eye open for it; hopefully the beer distributer around the block from me has it.

Fushia is about a 10 – 15 minute walk from the subway train, but this event was totally worth it! The restaurant is inside (downstairs) the Wyndham Hotel, which I didn’t expect.
As soon as I walked in, there was Unilocal swag galore so now I have a red Unilocal water bottle, Unilocal sunglasses, Unilocal lip gloss and Unilocal hand sanitizer… Yay!
Fushia provided Tiger Beer, but I don’t drink so asked one of the servers if we could get non alcoholic drink and she graciously provided it. I ordered orange juice, which came with lots of ice– Just the way I like it!
Now, onto the food.
Mango Salad — This was very colorful and had green and red peppers, onion and mango. It tasted just okay to me… I would have liked to have more mango.
Crispy Rock Shrimp — Delicious and adorable bite sized pieces with a bit of great tasting sauce of spiced mayo. Very crispy and light. This was one of my favorites.
Pork Dumplings — Decent, though not extremely memorable to me.
Sushi Plate — I don’t eat raw fish, so didn’t try that or the avocado roll but I tasted the eel roll, which was pretty good. There wasn’t a very strong flavor of eel, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Roasted Pork Belly Bun — This was wonderful! Another favorite of mine. The bun was in a cute flower-​like shape and was soft, fluffy, fresh and the pork belly was pretty lean (not too much fat, which I appreciated) and the dark sauce was wonderful tasting. The pork was just oozing with flavor and was tender. There was also cucumber, which was a nice touch to balance out the meat/​sauce.
Fried Pork Dumplings — Incredibly juicy and flavorful, was served incredibly warm and fresh off the pan.
Ramen — The noodles were just okay… Tasted like regular instant ramen noodles, but the meat (pork– though had too much fat for me), bamboo and corn were good.
Overall, great food and very good service. Nice company as well, of course! Thanks to Fushia and Jando for putting this event together.

What a beautiful day for an event. The family owned restaurant was located in a fairly desolate area of lic on the bottom floor of a hotel. We started off with refreshingly cold Tiger beer, which the bartender continuously opened and made available throughout the event.
Platters of good food kept coming around so no one was left out. Some favorites were the sushi — super fresh! and shrimp tempura. The pork buns had the cutest buns, which were shaped like flowers!
How they managed to know exactly how many beers to prepare for this number of people to last until 4 is beyond me. But the last beer was consumed as the event ended.
Thanks Jando and Unilocal for another lovely event! We’ll miss you and have fun!

Hidden away inside of a Hotel near the water in Long Island City there is Fushia! I actually wasn’t expecting a hotel bar/​restaurant. But something always different with Unilocal.Cold Tiger beer was served to accompany an array of delicious Asian bites.
Cold Mango and Pepper Salad: Incredibly colorful and vibrant. Refreshing tasting but not something I’d probably typically order. It was a palate cleanser for what was to come.
Rock Shrimp Tempura: Probably my favorite thing of the afternoon. It was both sweet and bite sized and light. No peeling of shrimp shells necessary. Two thumbs up.
Steamed Pork Dumplings/​Fried Veggie Dumplings: Both were really great. I especially liked the soy vinegar sauce it was drenched in. Miss Anna F. may have squirted on me at one point in her enthusiasm with munching on her dumplings. What?! I also, appreciated that one of the waiters heard that neither of us got to try their fried dumplings and came around in the end with a plate for the front. Those were pretty darn good too.
Little Sushi platters: Eel roll, avocado roll, Tuna & Salmon Sashimi with a swab of wasabi and ginger on the side. Especially enjoyed that last touch because I’m a fan of spicing my sushi up. Everything was pretty fresh. Not the best sushi you’ve ever tasted but good and they were simple rolls that are hard to screw up. Favorite was the eel roll.
Pork Belly Buns: The pork and the hoisin sauce were the best part. A little bit fatty but not too much and cooked pretty well to an almost falling apart status. The only complaint was on the buns. I couldn’t care for them. It was a little flat and Styrofoam tasting. I like buns fluffy!
Ramen bowls: I’m not the biggest fan of ramen on hot or cold days but especially in the summer so I only tasted a bit of it. It was okaaaaaaay. The broth and noodles didn’t really mesh well together. Something needed to be jazzed up and out of weird personal preference corn legit frightens me. I did like the sliced bamboo shoots though.
Fun event and sheds tear at there being no Queens events till late August. Jando is the best!

A rather new family business right in a nice hotel in LIC, Fushia was a wonderful casual Pan-​Asian fusion restaurant with sleek wood paneling and a nice, clean open space.
We started with lots of Tiger beer which was refreshing and perfect for a hot summer day. It was also a great pairing for the delectable bites that would come.
The mango salad was a refreshing starter and lightly dressed. The mangoes used were fresh, very sweet and tender.
The shrimp tempura was the best! Light tempura batter that wasn’t greasy at all with a creamy spiced mayo.
Steamed pork dumplings had a nice texture and juicy but I preferred the fried dumpling that was filled with vegetables and was nice and chewy. It had a better overall flavor with the scallion oil.
The assorted sushi plate was really good. Very fresh with a good size and good fish to rice ratio, everything was right on this one.
The pork belly that I got was a bit tough. I think I just got a bad cut with no fat or skin on it; just lean meat. Otherwise, the fluffy flowery bun was good as was the sweet sauce and cucumber was a nice touch to the bun.
The ramen was a miss unfortunately and frankly, with all the great stuff they were offering, they may not need this on their menu. The broth was bland and salty and the noodles kind of overdone. However, the toppings were good.

What a gorgeous day to walk over the bridge from Brooklyn! It was nice to quench my thirst from the long walk with some ice cold Tiger beer.
As always, it was great to see some old and new faces! I had a great time with my table-​mates trying to samples (which were pretty big sample plates!) and chatting.
I also got to eat some extras of the salmon and tuna, since some of my fellow Unilocalers didn’t eat raw fish. SCORE.

Wonderful event as always in Queens, this place is located in LIC, great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
The great staff was serving the following snacks:
Mango salad: very refreshing and enough soft texture from the mango, crispiness from the bell peppers and onions.
Shrimp Tempura: I am a shrimp lover so I cannot say anything against them were just delicious. I think this was the best plate all afternoon.
Sushi: I’m not going to lie! They were decent enough, I eaten better sushi before.
Pork: Had a great and it was plentiful and well balance with flavor and contrast in food texture. I really enjoyed this one.
Ramen: Was very good, love the taste of noddle and pork.
Dumplings: The skin was crispy, they were done very well also was bit savory but had a good size.
Beverage:
Drinks: Good and cold Tiger beer was served to accompany the food. They also had water
for the one that don’t like alcohol or beers.

Tiger Uppercut
Tigers are great for the summer.
Must’ve drank at least twen tasty Thai Tiger lagers.
I ain’t no sommelier, but Lagers are lovely with Asian fare.
They were well organized with self serve beers,
and I felt the time between their sample distribution was well-​spaced.
The mango salad was a refreshing starter.
The standouts for me were the rock shrimp, and the pork buns.
Don’t hate me but, I’m not really a ramen connoisseur
cause I prefer jazzing up some instant noodles at home, but that’s just me.
I didn’t get to try any dumplings but their swift disappearing act
suggests they must’ve been good.
The K-​pop was bumpin and the A/​C was pumpin.
Cheers to the owner knows how to throw a fierce fiesta.

Fantastic event. I was so happy when I got into the event. But I also knew I’d be on a tight schedule as I could only stay on for an hour. For that full hour that I was there, I got to sample mango salad, sushi, dumplings, and shrimp tempura! I had a few sips of the tiger beer as well.
The staff worked hard to keep everybody happy. This place is spacious for LIC. Even though it is located on the lower level of the hotel, it is not associated with the hotel as it is family owned. They have only been around for a few months. I just remember there were trays of food coming out of the kitchen non-​stop. That is amazing.
Simply said, Queens events are always wonderful and they do not disappoint! Thank you so much to Jando and the staff there who worked so hard and put on this event for everyone!

Synopsis: You would never think that there would be a restaurant underneath a hotel in LIC. LIC, when it is not by the train, or riverside is a bit more industrial, secluded. Even walking through the area, I was questioning myself as to whether or not I was going the right direction. But lo and behold, I first see Joshua and then knew I was in the right place. The food line up was amazing: mango salad, shrimp tempura, pork buns, sushi and ramen! To top it off beer! Classy and shwasted!
Environment: The restaurant is so massive! So much more bigger than it appears from the outside. Nice wood tops, floors, and chairs! It has a nice open space that gives you options of sitting on a cushion bench, or chairs. Even though it is in the basement-​like area there is enough huge windows to let the sunshine of a nice Saturday day come in, to brighten the place up.
Food:
Mango salad: Refreshing and enough soft texture from the mango, but crispiness from the bell peppers and onions. Perfection! ⁵⁄₅
Shrimp Tempura: I loved the fact that the batter wasn’t overwhelming like in most cases, so it give you the more shrimp taste you I love. ⁵⁄₅
Sushi: Considering that Jando mentioned don’t come here with a bougie judging pallet, the sushi was pretty good. I’m not going to lie! It didn’t taste like the fish was old. ⁴⁄₅
Pork Bun: The pork portion wasn’t as soft as I would have liked it so it would melt in your mouth. If it was cooked an extra hour or so, then it would have been ⁵⁄₅ stars. What really salvaged this dish, however, was the sauce. YUM! Finger-​licking good! ⁴⁄₅.
Ramen: The noodles seemed typical, nothing out of the ordinary. I was just grateful that it wasn’t overcooked to feel like a long piece of rice. Even in this dish, the pork could have been benefited by being cooked a little longer. ³⁄₅.
Drinks: Tiger Beer! Tiger Beer! Tiger Beer!!! I even had one «to-​go!» God, I’m ghetto!

baby + tip! Makes the perks of being fab!

This restaurant is tucked to the side of the Wyndham Hotel. If you see the red lantern, you have found Fushia.
The restaurant kept the Tiger beer flowing. I never had Tiger beer before, but I found it to be very tasteful, smooth, and enjoyable. All those empty bottles that we drank is an indicator that we all enjoyed it.
The food:
Mango Salad– Very crisp and refreshing
Sushi– The avocado really shined in the roll. I couldn’t quite taste the eel– it wasn’t very noticeable. The tuna and salmon were fresh and great.
Ramen– I first thought that they were using ramen noodles, but I’m pretty sure it is rice noodles. Not sure if it is part of their asian fusion. The noodles that they use was very light and broke easily when you bite into it. I prefer a thicker noodle that absorb the soup broth more.
Pork Belly — This was great. The pork belly was plentiful and well balance with flavor and contrast in food texture. I really enjoyed this.
Dumplings — I had the pork dumpling. The skin was crispy and done very well. I would have prefer a little spice in the filling, but this was very good.
Shrimp– The rock shrimp tempura was delicious. I think this was a hit for everybody.

Awesome Saturday afternoon event in LIC. It’s always good to be introduced to more places in LIC as it’s developing like gangbusters. So when Jando sent out information on a sushi place in the area, it was great to get to check it out. Wonderful hosts and great service. The establishment is a perfect size for the area to get a casual lunch or dinner with a nice bar setup by the entrance. Wonderful NYC skyline view outside along the east river as well.
Some favorites were the sushi. Salmon was fresh and delish. As well as the California rolls and eel rolls. The dumplings both veggie and pork were cooked up perfectly and had a great vinegar soy sauce. The shrimp tempura was also cooked perfectly. Fried and crunchy on the outside with a large juicy shrimp on the inside with a wonderful mayo sauce.
It’s nice to see that the neighborhood really is coming along and more foodie visits are to be had here. Also a great way to send off Jando on his work trip to NoLa SF and Portland. See ya in august jando and as always great job at hosting and putting the event together along with the owners. Was also great to see so many new Unilocal elites as well which i got to know as well as some of the old ones that i caught up with.

Elite Event @ Fushia… thank you for being the functional equivalent of breakfast, lunch, and a dinner appetizer (for me) on 7÷11÷2015. Whatever sub-​optimal condition I found myself in at the early wake-​up hour of noon, a spark was rekindled in me through quasi-​lengthy walks from public transport (14 minutes to Queensboro Plaza), «porn manatee» sightings, and some nourishment of the Japanese variety.
Doors opened at 2:00, and this particular writer’s appetite-​driven excitement compelled an arrival time 10 minutes early. Needless to say, the pain of the wait for the doors to open hurt something fierce, and the time between entering the event and receiving the first bites of food was excruciating; luckily, our hunger was plied with alcohol in the form of Tiger Beer; more filling than boozy, but certainly a welcome beverage.
When the food started to roll out, there was nary a seat available in the entire joint, with the Unilocal faithful looking forward to sampling the Fushia’s offerings for the day. First course was the mango salad; I was a huge fan of the mouthfuls of sweet and tart bites… the stuff was super refreshing and light, so much so that I had no qualms about getting seconds.
Actually, I pretty much got a double dose of most of the food being handed out; in all honesty, I would have been very happy if I had a tray of the fried shrimp topped w/​mayo all to myself… alas, I had to settle with two pieces. What I missed in the lack of shrimp was made up for with a vengeance with the other food, most notably the sushi sampler and the pork buns. All of the food I had the pleasure of tasting was super successful; sizes struck a fine balance between generous and light and everything was tasty and worth getting one (or two) more time (s).
As always, it’s always a pleasure to run into familiar faces as well as meet some Unilocal Elites who are still wet behind the ears. Conversations of booze-​of-​choice were had, as well as venting out frustrations at the sad reality that so few made it onto the Unilocal’s Burstday Cruise scheduled for the 15^th of this month; staying up till midnight in the middle of the week for those of us in our early-​late 20s is no easy feat… and when it’s all for naught, well… it’s just a goddamn shame, hahaha.
On a bittersweet note, our beloved and fearless leader, Jando, will be on one of the lengthiest sabbaticals in Unilocal Queens history; be it for business or pleasure, the man has definitely deserved a bit of time away from his official duties. Fresh legs and broadened perspective for the best CM in the five boroughs not only benefits Jando the man… but also Jando the CM. I’m sure that the reprieve will provide a burst of energy that will be translated into some brain-​melting events in the future… in fact, I recall that the next event will be something «huge», so keep ⁸⁄₂₅ marked.
All in all, another crowd pleaser of an event. This one will have to hold me over for a while.

located in the ever burgeoning, trending, (and other real estate + terms), Fushia does a stellar job of delivering a comfortable casual dining and drinking experience in LIC!
the space itself is fairly new, modern. lots of light. clean lines. bright-​ish orange accents coloring. cool toned woods. a lot of open space. it’s a small walk-​down. bar to your right upon entering. 10 – 12 seats there. an open dining area with tables, banquette/​bench like seating around the perimeter of the space. lots of two– and four-​tops. very casual. super clean décor… no wear or distressing. the space feels very new or renovated. in-​set ceiling lights so the space has additional light without being too stark and overpowering. good for food porn shots or selfies — to fellow paparazzzzzzzis! ha
the menu for the day:
mango salad: light not too sweet. nice crunch. fresh.
shrimp tempura bite: my favorite eat of the night. i am a tempwhora food slut (seewhatididthere) and this tiny bite satiated my need for crunchy fried saucy goodness. i had like 3 of these. that’s a lie. six. zzz
dumplings: think there was a veggie one, but i got the steamed pork one. just a solid dumpling. to me nothing mindblowing, but a good solid bite.
sushi plate. mmmm fish. no complaints. good standard sushi. fresh. not over-​riced or too fishy.
pork belly bun. can’t go wrong here. it’s pork belly yo! in a soft bun cradle. my second favorite eat of the day and fairly filling: fat + carbs. YASSSS
the ramen. it was okay. the brothing and noodles both need a little bit of work. the savor and fat and carbo-​ness didn’t meld together as much i’d like. but trust me i was probably in the minority (because i am one – wait what. i digress.) because there was a lot of noodle slurp and empty bowls.

the staff: awesome! the owner was talking to a lot of us about the food. he gave a candid heartfelt speech about this eatery in LIC. the staff working the events more than did their job. quick. kind. efficient. and most of all did all of the the above without a bit of stress.

big cheers to Jando and his team for pulling off another summer fun event. other than Jando reminding us Queens is the largest borough and us Manhattanites are trespassing into his dominion (ha), what i reall enjoy about Queens events is that the places Jando introduces us to are really reflective of his personality: jovial, welcoming, fun-​loving jibes, and authenticity. Queens events remind me a lot of going to your favorite friends’, cousins’, uncles’, etc.‘s houses to hang out, eat comfy fod, pull shenanigans, etc. no pretensions just a lot of down-​to-​earth fun… awesomeness.
the great thing about Fushia is that you can walk to other cool stuff in the area: LIC FLEA, LIC SMORGASBURG, ROCKAWAY BREWERY, and the list goes on.

This event was what you have come to expect for a Queens event: great venue, good bites, great staff, and great Unilocalers.
The restaurant and staff are just getting their feet into the sand. They are so cordial and are so open to feedback which is critical to the success of any business. The food had some hits and some misses. It seems pretty clear that the rock shrimp was the winner here today. The dumplings (steamed and fried) were good. The sushi and pork rolls were okay. The ramen and mango salad could definitely use some work. The Tiger beer… wow. This was the first time I had it… and the restaurant was very very generous with it.

As always, good food and AMAZING people! Great to meet new Unilocalers and find old faces. I want to thank the owners who invited us to try one of the newest restaurants in LIC and I wish them all the best. I personally liked their rock shrimps appetizers and the all-​you-​can-​drink tiger beer. Really sad to hear that Jando is leaving us for 6 weeks, but we’ll all find a way to live our lives. I heard that there’s going to be an awesome elite event in store for us in late August so I can’t wait! Nelson — we can’t thank you enough for stalking us, taking candid shots of us when we least expect it, and telling me to put away my laptop at a social event. We love you and appreciate all the things you do for us! =)
