History

Established in 1966.

In 1966 the concept of Formula Motorsports was born through the purchase of a heavily damaged 1963 Karman bodied 356 coupe. A keen interest in this automotive marquee developed, nurtured by many years of proper higher technical/​formal education along with hands on training from seasoned veterans in the assorted road racing fraternities. Candidly, in its present form it’s strongly believed Formula Motorsports is the dominant and progressive leader in comprehensive Porsche service, competition and collision repair. Bosch is today’s leading manufacturer of electronic and electro-​mechanical systems for automotive use. This is especially true for Porsche.

Manager

You will find his passion for Porsche, academic background in various scientific disciplines, and intellect second to none in this competitive space. Michael’s current studies include mechanical engineering and metallurgy. Through Michael FM is the only Porsche service facility, which offers not only technical knowledge, but a client service arm that offers direction in aspects of both automobile investment advice (using various investment vehicles in order to limit exposure to ever changing market prices and automobile liquidity) and collection growth/​consolidation.

Nice, well decorated shop and convenient NYC location (close to subways, etc). Mike and crew were very accommodating with a tire mount and balance and advice and talk of track days. I did not have extensive work done here at this time, but the caliber of machinery (track prepped and cup cars, vintage air cooled cars, etc) spoke to the level of work they can do.

I was so tired of bringing my car to the Porsche dealer because they were (a) expensive and (b) always trying to sell me nonsense (like nitrogen for my tires, for example… ridiculous). So I did a quick internet search for an alternative repair shop and happened upon Formula Motorsports and a couple other random places in the Tri State area. I called them all and was very impressed and comforted by my conversation with Mike at Formula Motorsports. He runs the shop. He clearly and quickly answered all my questions (and even gave me a quote over the phone, which other shops I called resisted doing). I read all the reviews about Formula Motorsports and have to say that I am glad I dismissed any of the bad ones (and there were very few anyway) because my experience at Formula Motorsports could not have been better. Mike honored the price he quoted me over the phone and spent a lot of time answering my questions in person. I also asked him to look the car over for any problems, which he did, and unlike the dealer that always claims there is something wrong, Mike told me my car was in good shape and didn’t need any additional repairs. Great customer service. The best part is that Formula Motorsports was dramatically cheaper than the dealer for this particular repair. I dropped the car off in the morning, picked it up that evening, and I will definitely be back for my next service. The shop is also filled with a sick array of new and old Porsches being repaired, restored and/​or prepped for the track. Totally cool.

I was referred to Formula Motorsports through the NY chapter of the Porsche Club of America. Formula has been in the business since 60s… Needless to say thorough and know their stuff. It’s a family run shop, and the rates are reasonable.
Very happy to have a local shop that can service my car, and avoid a trip to the dealer. Thx Mike!

I’ve started using Formula for repair & maintenance on my cayman S track car. Great guys and very knowledgeable about all things Porsche. Their rates are reasonable (for NYC…) and they don’t gouge you like Manhattan Motorcars. Highly recommended.

While i recognize that many of the reviews are positive, I would be remiss if i did not share my mixed experience with this company as that is the purpose of a public review forum, so that we may be informed and businesses may use feedback to improve.
My initial experience was that the owner’s son, whom I dealt with, was very knowledgeable about his trade and in spite of the manner/​attitude in which he addressed others, we had him do the work, no issue. Commended his estimated time of completion.
Recently, I called as I was on the side of the road, the owner himself was polite and offered me the number of a towing company to have the car towed to the shop. Not until after our car was there was I informed that they would not be able to even look at the car for two weeks. In various attempt to retrieve the car via AAA as we needed it sooner, a slew of emails and accusations ensued, our lawyer finally having to get involved so that we could retrieve our automobile. The AAA/​Kimberly flat bed service dispatched 3 separate tow trucks to retrieve the vehicle. According to AAA «he yelled at my driver I am not sending them back unless one of his employees comes out and not him».
The car was eventually released after many hours of our lawyer haggling with him for our property that he decided to report stolen. How can someone steal their own vehicle?
While many prefer to deal with professional amicable, straight forward businesses, some choose otherwise, this was only our experience that has been dragged out with threats of legal reprimand for our factual experiences about our interactions. We all on this site choose to exercise our first amendment rights granted by us many years ago. Do not let anyone oppress and censor your views. It is your inalienable right.

Has been there a couple times now and Michael helped me every time dealing w various inconveniences with the car. Avoided buying some expensive trim pieces by fixing small clips at no charge. Very knowledgeable about the car so I don’t need to spend all the time explaining the issues. After replacing the squeaking breaks he even give my car a free wash and wipers! Highly recommended. Don’t go to the ‘official’ stealer and waste your money, or time. Patrick

I would have loved to have gotten a positive experience here, because everyone with an old 911 knows how hard it can be to find a good shop, especially in the NYC area. Sadly, Michael at Formula failed me at every single aspect of service, so I’m back trekking an hour to NJ for service.
Whether it be the failure of him to take photos of the damage to my car (we spoke about it several times, both in person and on the phone, because my car was the subject of an insurance dispute… but, at the end, all I got was a «oh well… I didn’t»…and I lost over $ 3k from my insurance claim on damage that may or may not have existed), or the fact he removed all of the items from my car to detail it and never put them back (including, after sending me on my way with a promise to have them sent by overnight mail to me, sending them 3 days later via FedEx ground — I got my phone charger, GPS, and headset 8 days later… I hope that my dropping $ 8k at this shop justified saving $ 20 on shipping costs). It also didn’t help that I asked Michael repeatedly to check the valves that had the heat blowing through the car even when the heater was turned off… well, for that one he said he didn’t notice anything, but the fact that the heat was blowing through before I made it a block from the shop told me that he likely didn’t bother checking.
I don’t know if perhaps Michael was in the midst of some life crisis or just decided to check out for the week my car was there, but my experience couldn’t be further from the positive reviews that others have left.

I live in the city so its hard to find anyone besides of MMC who I didn’t have a good experience with to service my Porsche. My brother in law recommended Formula Motorsports to upgrade my 991.
When I got their reply I knew I was in good hands. Michael who is the owner emailed me back at 9:30pm on a Saturday about 2 minutes after I emailed him and answered all my questions in great length and offered to meet me at 6am Monday morning so I could get to work on time. Car received a couple upgrades and a minor service which was quoted and priced exactly as my estimate stated. I figured this was going to be much more expensive than MMC but it wasn’t. Thanks very much to the whole team there for getting my car track ready and within my budget. I will be a loyal client for many years to come.

8 months ago my door of my 997 GTS was smashed in. My wife opened the door and someone pulling into the spot next to us smashed the door as it opened. Literally bending the door and destroying the hinges. After freaking out at everyone involved I called formula. They sent a tow truck and then took care of the rest. I went away to Florida for two weeks and when I came home my car was ready. It looked like new. Next time an accident happens I might not freak out as much. But I definitely will use formula. The persons name I dealt with was Micheal. He called everyday with an update and made the process much easier.

I have been a customer at Formula for over 2 years and I would highly recommend them to any Porsche owner. Besides their high level of knowledge and craftsmanship, you get a secure sense of honestly which is really hard to fine with any auto shop. Mark’s resume is one of the best in the business as he has been doing this longer than I have been alive. And, Michael is a great guy.
I own an older 911. And I have watched my car slowly transformed into a world-​class restored classic. As a result I have been a customer of all facets of their business. So if I had to sum it up… I would say the collision/​body work is absolutely stellar. The mechanical work (especially knowledge about modifications) is very good. And the only real negative is that they sometimes they get overwhelmed with other work at the shop.
