Last Saturday, it was over 90 degrees and my air conditioning system suddenly developed a major condensate leak in my second story town-​home. After turning off the A/​C and quickly mopping up the water, I called a dozen local contractors for urgent help. Commonwealth Cooling and Heating was the company I chose initially because a human being answered the phone – not a recording to leave a voice mail message. It turned out to be a good decision.
As the temperature increased, I had my fingers crossed that someone would show during the promised 1 – 4 PM time frame. A young unassuming man named Craig did indeed arrive sometime around 2 and was able to assess the problem and solution within a few minutes. He explained what needed to be done to fix the problem, quoted a reasonable price, and got to it in a methodical and thoroughly professional way — despite the excessive heat and humidity.
Craig took the time to explain further what caused the leak and the steps I needed to take in the future to avoid another potential disaster. I’m not sure I was able to adequately express my appreciation for the repair work and the brief preventive maintenance information. But, for future HVAC service needs, I’ll feel confident in going with Commonwealth again based on their much-​needed help this past weekend.

I would not waste your time with this company. I have done a lot of work with them, however their techs are not the best and Brian is not that nice to deal with. Shop elsewhere.

John came to service our internal unit. He was professional and very helpful in explaining what was going on with my unit. I appreciated his candor and his help. I did not have anything installed yet so I cannot speak to that; but, from the initial contact that I made to the office (Mandy was quite helpful) to meeting John and learning about my options — I am glad that I called Commonwealth.

Have used this company for year. From an a/​c and furnace replacement to my seasonal checks and always receive great service. Today John and Craig came out for my spring check… one again excellent service. Highly recommended!!!

Had Brian come out and replace a capacitor. He did not carry the proper part so he needed to gerry rig it. Tried to get me to replace a perfectly good part because he said it needed to be replaced. He told me that the part I needed was a special order from Trane when in fact it was manufactured by GE, when I called him out on it he made up a bunch of BS. When I asked for the part he replaced he told me I should not take it because of the chemicals in it, turned out it was just mineral oil. Brian owns Commonwealth, he is not someone that I would ever trust or recommend to anyone. If I could give him zero stars I would.

Good hvac contractor. They did repair work as promised and despite a few hiccups in the process/​scheduling I would recommend them. Craig, technician was very informative and helpful. Their scheduling was fuzzy but they did work with us and apparently rearranged some folks to get to our furnace issue. They charge a flat $ 150 diagnostic fee. Prices may be a bit too high for work so check around and I took advantage of a Special on their website. Tech honored coupon on the spot when I showed him on my iPhone…
Called after hours and response was pretty fast. Courteous, professional and effective.

Had to replace our A/​C Unit and Furnace… ouch — not cheap at all. The team was responsive, very professional, and easy to do business with. Quick turnaround from estimate to service. Very pleased with Commonwealth Cooling & Heating.

got my money back after one month of dispute

The fan on my AC unit outside stopped working. I could hear something trying to run and buzz but the fan wouldn’t turn. I did some googling and checked out Youtube about the problem and saw it was a job that I could probably do myself but honestly I wasn’t 100% sure that the problem was what people were saying but I was a good 80%. Instead I contacted Commonwealth Cooling and Heating and just wanted it taken care of. This company replaced my whole AC and heating unit a few years ago. After today im thinking that I should have just shopped around instead of trusting the owner of the company because he lives across the street from me.
5÷21÷13 a tech came out to look at my unit. In a few minutes I was told that to fix my unit it would be approximately 400 dollars!!! I asked what was wrong and he said that I needed a dual capacitor that he was going to charge me 185 dollars for and I needed to have my coils chemically cleaned which was going to be 165 dollars. Doing those two thing with service was gonna cost me almost 400 dollars!!! I kindly told the guy I would like to pay for him coming out and that’s it. I called Trible’s to see how much for a dual capacitor and my mouth dropped when they said 18 dollars!!! Yes 18 dollars!!! This guy was gonna charge me 185 dollars for something I got for 18 dollars!!! They were great at Trible’s! I picked up some foam coil cleaner which I was told to use to clean my coils. I got 2 cans for 6 dollars each. That’s 12 dollars for a chemical clean which I was gonna be charged 166 dollars for. So in 20 minutes I was able to clean my coils and fix my A/​C Unit and it cost me 30 DOLLARS NOT 400 DOLLARS!!! It was as easy as changing a freaken light bulb. I can’t believe that people can be so dishonest just to make a buck. I wouldn’t let these people clean up my dogs poop. If I didn’t educate myself Commonwealth Cooling and Heating would have charged me 400 dollars for something that cost me 30 dollars and 20 minutes of my time. Beyond disappointed. Make sure you educate yourself or they may try to get you.

I had Commonwealth replace my entire HVAC system. I directly and specifically asked the owner, Brian if permits were required for this work, I was new to the area and didn’t know. He told me permits were not required to replace a furnace. I have since found out that that is NOT true, he should have put in for a permit and inspection. We were advised that the way he installed the units would not pass Fairfax County inspection and we are having to have some things re-​done.
I also don’t believe that he installed the correct size unit as the home even with new windows does not stay warm in winter or cool properly in summer.
When we presented him with the opinion of another HVAC company that the unit was indeed too small, that contractor later told us that Brian made threating phone calls to him.
