A couple of the kids are speech-​delayed so I learned about a speech therapy [more like sign language + social skills] program at Harbor Regional through word of mouth here. Our instructor minored in sign language but she’s not fluent anymore so she has to look up words when we request how to do specific gestures (like «share»). The baby sign language class is more like a playgroup. The children are 4 – 20 months old. We review the signs from the previous session and in the handout before the free period when the aunt/​grandmother and mothers socialize.
I like that there are courses for parents with Asperger’s or autism. I’d probably enroll my son in their peewee sports in the future. In the Fall classes seem limited to September and October. They have a preschool for 3 – 5 year olds to prepare for kindergarten but I think many parents just want to expose their kids to other children — it seems that most of us are on our first or only child. Staff was kind enough to check the class chart and show me to our room even though it was right next to us.
Other offerings include children’s yoga and Spanish for kids! Some classes have discounted fees for residents within the Los Alamitos School District. The location is next to a elementary school and the Youth Center so you might pass it on the road. There’s no pressure about missing a class — its okay to show up by yourself/​they understand that sometimes its the baby’s nap time. They just seem to offer more toddler classes than other nearby communities.
