American Rag Cie

Sarah at American Rag definitely made lemonade with my lemon. I am thrilled to have a new ring — a different style. I was not feeling confident about having that same exact style after everything I went through with the last one. The new one is equally beautiful and it looks more solidly constructed. I feel a lot better about being a long time customer of American Rag knowing that they stand behind the products they sell.

Horrible staff, horrible restroom. Even told me I couldn’t walk around with my coffee. I only purchased the coffee because that was the only way I could get a token to use the dirty bathroom. I will gladly spend my money elsewhere.

Tried to patronize a local business and buy a coffee table book here. When I got home, I noticed the front cover of the book was EXTREMELY scratched up and indented. When I went to return it, the manager informed me that they don’t offer returns, and there was only one copy of the book so I couldn’t exchange it. Terrible business policy. The manager was kind of chuckling like, yeah, we all think it’s a bummer you can’t return it, tough luck. Excuse me, but I just wasted $ 80 and now you’re laughing? Idiots

Over priced crap and super snobby personnel.
Not even the Chanel store wants you to check in your bags. Step up your security cause that policy is bogus! And your merchandise ain’t THAT great!

Overall, not a bad shopping experience. Store is really big and stuffed with fairly reasonably priced goods. My fiancé and I stopped in on a busy Saturday afternoon, and though it took a while to get a worker’s attention, they were attentive and as helpful as possible. My fiancé was able to find a great pair of vintage Levis that were reduced further from the ticket price.
We also spotted Kiefer Sutherlund casually shopping for himself, which was our only celebrity sighting during a week long stay in LA.

If you want to buy the best quality & style shoes, this is the best place to shop. I bought my black Italian boots here. The quality and the style you can’t find any other place. I also had a problem with something I had bought and the manager AJ was very accommodating.

I love this store, every time i go i find something i like and usually end up getting, they have the best designers and threads here from all over. Its for men and woman, might have to get a job here one day a week for the discount ha ha. Sometimes the mark up is more then what you can get the piece for online but not by much.

GREAT store with heritage inspired clothing along with newer designer styles and vintage too! Whether the guys in the denim bar, or the girls in the street style side, everyone is super nice. I always find something on sale that I like!

…well, what a pathetic shopping experience. I was about to spend over $ 750 and at the cashier asked to use the bathrooms. I was told that only the restaurant supplies the necessary tokens (??). Went there — it was closed. I was told, (not in these exact words) — tough luck.
I am sure the employees use the bathrooms… and how much trouble can it be to allow a customer use it.
That, in addition to how un-​attentive and un-​friendly their staff was, prompted me give up on buying what I was planning to buy and leave… and I will not go back there again.
They have a reasonable selection for a denim lover like me, but there are plenty of other places to shop at where I can leave my money and feel that it is actually appreciated.
I guess it is no wonder they closed all their other stores if this is any indication to how they conducted business there.
They also have a lousy return policy (only exchanges, within 10 days I believe), which I personally do not like.

If only the staff were as fun as the clothes they sell. There is nothing worse than coming up to a register with a bunch of stuff and being greeted by lazy glances and unfriendly looks. This was the case on one Monday evening. When I paid for my goods, which included a dress, the guy didn’t bother to wrap anything in tissue, and proceed to crumple up my dress and begin to stuff in the bag. I was like, «Hang on, let’s not do that.» He was like, «Oh wait, what am I doing?» In a dazed kind of way. The girl at the register next to him did not once look at me, or acknowledge me as a customer. This experience makes me not want to buy their cute stuff, plain and simple. So, management: Train your employees to smile at every single customer who approaches the register. Smile, say thank you, ask them how they are doing. It makes a BIG difference. The difference between keeping a customer and losing a customer.
(Side note: The girl who worked at the fitting room was pleasant).

I came here for the first time to grab a Blk Dnm jacket which they need more supply of but I ended up finding a gnarly Schott leather jacket that fit me WAY better and was about two bills cheaper. The staff here are SO chill, friendly, and low-​key super professional. I went around the store three times looking at all the unique clothes and house ware they had, and not one of the staff on the floor made me feel uncomfortable for browsing. I ended up buying my Schott leather jacket and a cute ARC sweater. A huge reason why, was because of how sweet my experience was here. I really appreciated the parking garage right next door considering how crazy parking is in this area. I see myself saving a couple of paychecks to come back, 80% because of the awesome customer service, and 20% cause they have a really unique and quality selection of clothes here. Love this place.

One excellent store in La Brea!
The store has many excellent clothing, shoes, and many other things.
The cashier — Daniel, is an extremely nice person who brings amazing hospitality to customers who swing by. I inquired so many things and he was always so energetic to help me out. In addition to that, Natasha also assisted me to purchase my stuffs, was also a really helpful person with kindness.
The place might be slightly more pricey than many places around, but I definitely recommend people to stop by if you want to see stylish clothing you can’t see around in many places.

Kudos to Berenice! Just all around great customer service. I called American Rag looking for a pair of Eight Fifteen wedges. Berenice found the shoes, let me know she could send them to me. It was a crazy few days and we were playing phone tag. She knew that I would be unavailable for a few days and left a note for the rest of the staff all the details to give me when I called. As promised my shoes arrived two days later.

The absolute best place to shop! New and fresh designer wear, endless jeans! Not to mention how helpful and friendly the staff are in there, if I’m looking for anything new to stunt in, I hit up this place, they got it all from sneakers all the way to the hat that’ll break necks sitting on your dome.

The bathroom in the store requires a token. They won’t let you use it unless you bought something. What a joke considering the price they are charging for their clothing!

HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. Hello??? Only people who HAVE MONEY can come here. And I WAS GETTING a lot of t shirts for me but what did I get? RUDE STUPID CUSTOMER SERVICE. And the lady named ruby, I dont know whats wrong with her, so rude. And the manager cannot even work. If you treat people who go to a fast food restaurant this bad then go ahead. But I’m not a cheap customer buying a 15 bucks tshirt. PLEASE improve your customer service, please!!! What the hell is wrong with everybody here. I’m never coming here again. TOO BAD that all the goodies here are sooooo nice but to be honest I’d rather smack my head than being here with the worstttttt customer service.

A store this big where you often can spend thousands of dollars and they don’t have a bathroom for their customers

decent spot to get some nice threads and to update your wardrobe with some higher quality clothing. they have Comme des Garçons, Publish, Ralph Lauren (RRL), and a few other obscure brands that i’m not too familiar with. they also have some jewelry, sunglasses, boots/​sneakers, and knick knacks that remind me of Urban Outfitters… but a little higher in the price range.
definitely worth a visit and peruse if you’re in the area and have some cash to spend.

This store is one of the OGs… Always ahead of the game. I’ve been coming to the block for decades and American Rag has withstood and even perpetuated a lot of the trends over the years. It’s not for everybody. Hell, some of the pricier items, arent for me either. I’m just saying. American Rag is where I buy my nicer denim. I pretty much stick with Levi’s and they have plenty to choose from with their Levi’s Made & Crafted selection. I’ve also bought 2 different washes in the Levi’s Hesher jeans. They are some of my favorites to wear… Now I dont always buy from American Rag as their prices can sometimes be a bit high. I tend to score and get lucky & find things I really like on sale. Just last week I finally took the plunge and bought a pair of Levi’s 501 selvedge denim that I’ve had my eye on for about a year now. Their other room (not the denim side) had 50% off signs all over the place. No signs of that sort in the denim section but I figured if I didnt buy it now, I’ll regret it if I come back and my size is gone. They werent too expensive compared to the other kinds of denim they have in stock… but still. So I tried them on and got great customer service from a tall guy that gave me a lot of information on denim washes and care. I really appreciated that cause I do consider them the experts and value the info they pass on to me. I was sold. The raw indigo color was dope and I brought them up to the register. When the cashier told me the total I had to do a double take. I was like how much? She said $ 26.75! Turns out the $ 98 denim I was stressing over was 75% off. Yuss!!! Thought that was awesome. The Made & Crafted denim I’ve bought there was more than twice the regular price of this pair and to this day I have not seen them on sale. Score!
I also like the other brands that American Rag has carried over the years like Stussy before it got played out. And yes, they had Stussy gear that the actual Stussy store up the block did not carry. I also have gotten some Staple brand button-​ups. They were carrying SSUR with the whole Comme des FUCKDOWN trend was full-​scale. Even their vintage section is on-​point. I used to find some really nice shirts in that section. And yes, it’s a lot more expensive than Jet Rag or Aardvarks but they are really selective with what they carry. The quality shows. My coworker got a really nice vintage Gucci purse. It was in the display case and was in great condition for how old it was. She was pretty damn happy about that purchase… Footwear selection is also always good. I remember when they carried Clarks Wallabees when others didnt know what was up with those classics. They are always evolving… I like that. Their buyers know what they’re doing. I might not buy or be into everything they sell but I will always peep what they have every now and again cause I might find something I have to have.
Customer service for me has always ranged from courteous to super cool. I have no complaints whatsoever. The security guard that worked there for years would recognize me cause I’ve been there so many times. Ha! Check your bags at the door. Validated parking next door with a minimum value purchase. $ 50? Don’t quote me. American Rag… Triple OG.

This place is the worst. CRAZY overpriced, hipster crap that you can find elsewhere. The staff is unfriendly and not knowledgable of their own items.
For some reason the store is decently packed, and I never understand. One plain grey v neck T-​shirt is $ 130. REALLY? Wow. They carry so many things that you can find in Urban Outfitters and stores like that.
There is a tiny little parking area a block down but you need to buy something to get it validated for free parking. Otherwise they charge you $ 6.
Don’t shop here unless you want to get ripped off.

What’s up attitude?
The only Hello was obviously from the new kid working bc everyone else here is living in hell! I returned shorts & the manager came down. No hello. No eye contact or communication except for asking if I’d like store credit. I replied NO!
Then I said Oh yea that’s all you do here. Oh well.
The last time I came in I was helped by one cool girl who buys the denim for AR.
Other than the newbie and her I felt like I was in high school with all the attitude. You make L.A. suck and I Love L.A.

This is the prime example of the main distinction between Los Angeles style and other West Coast cities.
Lets start with the store, pretty large, packed, kind of like an authentic Urban Outfitters. Without getting into the demin debate which would take both of us all morning, lets just say it’s about quality and cut.
The main part of the store is split mens and womens with shoes and accessories playing peacekeeper.
They sell new and used gear, good quality used gear though, so don’t’ think of it quite like other places. The range of good is from $ 20 shirts of $ 2,000 leather jackets and due to the quality of their demin you’d looking at $ 100-​$ 200 for most pairs.
I found their used items to be a mish mosh of unappealing items used to slap together outfits. Lacking the combination of unique and well cut and quality, «vintage» doesn’t always mean good or better. I rarely pick up anything from that part of the store, almost exclusively get denim here. Apparently for those of us who come north they have a 2^nd location at Fashion Island which I’ll probably be checking out from now on. They are generally staffed well, but I wouldn’t say friendly in any regard. Helpful in a curt sense, but company return policy is to pretty much laugh in your face. Liken to a Barney’s Co-​Op.
Shoe selection is eclectic from some super cheap quality inexpensive models sitting right next to handmade leathers from Portugal, which to me also a little overpriced.
This place is not for everyone as they don’t quite cater to everyone and it’s not necessarily a 1 stop shop.

If you hate the fact that most clothing stores are soulless mass mongering enterprises, you will love American Rag. There simply aren’t many stores that are as well curated & offer as many quality items as this unique store. Every item here seems to be hand picked with very good taste. Whatever style you like you can find a piece of it here. Overall, I find the vibe to be very classic American with a vintage feel.
I love the high ceilings and the classic displays. Although there are a lot of merchandise in the store, the space never feels too cluttered. The employees here all have excellent taste and is willing to help without ever being intrusive. Great shoes and sneaker section that is in the middle of the store but yet feels apart from everything else. Love their accessories cases where you can find very personal and cool trinkets. You can find everything from wallets, to chains, to sunglasses here.
On top of everything, American Rag features an awesome vintage section where you can find many one of a kind jackets, hats, vests, shirts, etc. American Rag is simply your one stop shop for parties and events. They even offer alterations and a sick selection of jeans next door. You can be transformed from head to toe or you can develop your personal style. I can go on raving about this place but I’d rather let my 5-​star rating do the rest of the talking.
