History

Established in 2010.

Art for Two tutoring was started in Greenfield, Massachusetts by artist and teacher Heather Sky Hilary, a 1999 graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design /art teacher for over 10 years. After witnessing creative students struggle with limited art lessons in classrooms, Heather decided to create open ended tutoring sessions for students who were interested in all forms of art — not just drawing. After four successful years in MA, Heather relocated to Los Angeles in order to serve a new populace. Art for Two continues to allow students to choose their own projects and explore at their own pace.

I believe that art is visual problem solving. My goal is to help students discover their own solutions to visual challenges — not teach them one defined solution. These tutoring sessions are about process not product. About fun, not formality.

Students choose their projects: Soapstone carving, Clay, Small Habitats, Construction, Games/Puzzles, Puppetry, doll making, printmaking, book arts, paper arts, and jewelry. Students keep sketchbooks (provided) for drawing exercises at the opening of each session. These visual journals help them track progress without the intimidation of the huge, blank page
