Don’t shop here if you ever ask about price!
I call to inquire and the sales guy quotes me $ 235 for a 48″ x 24″ hard maple table top. I ask if this type of wood is on the high end, low end or average in terms of price. He tells me that if I need to ask about price I’m not in their target market!
This guy thinks he’s selling you municipal water — no, you don’t have a monopoly on lumber in Los Angeles and there are other lumber yards that will gladly answer my questions, including those about price. I may be willing to pay $ 235, or more, but it will not be with you. You are not that special.
P. S. For the record, my other table top is a 72″ x 30″ mesquite, which costs over a grand. You never know who may be in your target market.

Great selection. Great prices. Helpful staff. What more can one ask for? It could be closer to home. Oh well.

Bohnhoff has great prices, good luck finding better prices anywhere and i mean anywhere. They are very helpful but it is best to come in understanding a little bit about lumber yard wording. Most of the would appears to be FAS and is stored in open atmosphere with a covering.

Ok, this is my second review, I think, and my third time purchasing from them. My first two orders were large because I was building a fence, but this last order, I am embarrassed to say, I just needed one piece of wood for to place on top of my dining room cabinets. So I speak to One of the guys and explain that I am looking for poplar wood and that the width needs to be at least 14 inches (most boards are cut at 12). So there are a variety of stacks of poplar wood and we located one of the boards, of course it has to be at the top stack located somewhere in the middle. The guys calls over one of the fork lift operators and he attempts to move two of the stacks just so that he can get to the top stack located 20 feet high. I tell my boyfriend that I am so embarrassed that they are going through all this trouble for one piece of wood, which they didn’t know. I tried to explain to the worker that it was not necessary to move all that wood because I was only purchasing one piece of wood and I can try and find it in the lower piles of wood. He didn’t even flinch when I said one piece of wood and assured me that it wasn’t a problem. WOW, that is customer service. So I found my wood, got it milled, brought it home and stained it and it came out amazing. Bohnoff Lumber is the place to go for amazing wood choices, low pricing, and excellent customer service.

Stacks and stacks of wood stacked on top of other stacks of wood. You can spend hours walking up and down the dusty aisles here and examining their extensive inventory (nobody will bother you), or you can just flag down one of the people working the yard and ask for advice. The ⁴⁄₄ white ash I was looking for was on the bottom of one of their mega-​stacks, but one of their forklift guys rearranged the stacks for me and had my pile ready for inspection lickety-​split. Bring some gloves and get ready to dig around and find those perfect planks and then flag down another one of their guys to tally up when you’re ready to go. If you’ve been doing your homework /​comparison shopping, you should be pleasantly surprised at the total. (They’re so well-​known that when calling around the other area lumber yards for prices and availability of the ⁶⁄₄ white ash that I was originally looking for, one of the other yards told me that most places wouldn’t carry white ash in ⁶⁄₄ and that I should just quit wasting my time and pay a visit to Bohnhoff.)
One of their saws was down when I visited, so my ripping /​S2S milling couldn’t get completed that day, but they did deliver to my mid-​city address for $ 60 later that week. Also, because I apparently lack foresight, one of the planks I’d chosen was a bit crooked and they weren’t able to rip it to produce 2 pieces of the desired width, but they did call me to let me know and to suggest a solution to the issue – great communication. The delivery guy was super friendly and we chatted about my project, fishing trips, etc. I promised to send him a photo of the dining table when it was complete (and if I can figure out how to upload via Unilocal,I will actually do this).
All in all, good people, good product.

It’s the only place to go for great lumber at reasonable prices. I’ve always bought rough and milled myself but the milling charges are fair too. It’s hard to buy just what I need. My garage is full of beautiful lumber from Bonhoff I bought «just in case»

came across bohnhoff after i was misinformed (read: bait and switch) by a culver city shop about the price of 150 BF of lumber and their milling charges. boy, am i glad i nearly got swindled, otherwise i’d never have found these guys.
their yard is certainly the opposite of fancy, but them’s just surface things: it’s a guarantee that what you want is there, and at prices that undercut every other shop in town. example: my 135 BF of ⁴⁄₄ african mahogany lumber cost under $ 700, with a milling charge of less than $ 200 to make it square and perfect. that’s a helluva deal.
they are friendly and warm guys, even lending me a pair of gloves so i could root through the stacks and find the perfect pieces of lumber for my bookshelf project. i ordered on a friday morning, and everything was ready to be picked up monday afternoon. that included S2Sing to 7/​8″, ripping two edges to an 8″ net, and cross-​cutting to 63.5″ planks (27 of them).
i won’t go anywhere else now, nor recommend anyone else either. bravo, guys.

If you are looking for great raw Hardwood Lumber, this is the best place in town, bar none. I had a cabinet shop for 15 years and purchased material from every place in LA, and Bohnhoff is the best.
When you drive up, be prepared to be underwhelmed. The warehouse is old and aging, and even the new paint from a couple of years ago, is peeling off. But inside you will find the best selection of the best lumber in the city. The people are friendly (for the most part) and always helpful, even if they are bit grouchy sometimes. If you go in with a smile, you will get a smile in return.
The staff is knowledgable and helpful. Charlie Bohnhoff, the owner, who is in his 80’s is an amazing man, and still works out in the yard, and makes deliveries! Everytime I place an order, of whatever size, he thanks me for my business in the most genuine and heartfelt way. Walt Maas, who works in the office is perhaps the nicest person I have ever met in my life. He is helpful, and will work with you on getting exactly the materials you need or the information you need. These 2 people are the core of Bohnhoff lumber and insure that it stays at the highest level of what a business should be.
It does not matter if you are buying one peice of walnut or a unit of plywood, the service here is amazing. I highly recommend this as your one stop hardwood supplier, and on top of that, they have the best prices in town.

Seriously if you want lumber this is the place! We are lucky in LA to have these guys because they are responsive, the have great product and lots of supply on hand and because they are capble and willing to mill whatever your request might be. I have purchased Ipe for 5 decks, oversized Ipe, quarter-​sawn oak, rough Black Walnut and I couldn’t have been more pleased.

Quality Lumber, Specialized Services, for the Trade Very Reasonable Prices.
I am a furniture maker and do all my own home improvement projects. This place is a gem if you know what you want, don’t need a lot of hand holding, and are willing to spend some time at the yard, this place is heaven. This place caters to the trade, so if you don’t know what FAS, CDX, or ⁵⁄₄ lumber is, then you might get snubbed.
Cabinet Grade Plywood is $ 99 a sheet at Anderson Plywood, which is not a bad price, and they have great customer service. Fine. At Bohnhoff Lumber the price is about $ 66.
Drawbacks include not being open early or late (strictly 8 – 5 hours) and not being open on Saturday. It is also a PITA finding this place and navigating this part of town.
Personally, this is the best lumber yard in town, in my judgment.
PS the dog’s name is «Rusty,» and the Cat, which really runs the place is «Chief»

Wow, the service here is a mixed bag. Some people are cordial and friendly, what I consider «normal,» while others possess astoundingly bad social skills. I will still come here though for the prices. Case in point: a sheet of baltic birch here was $ 59; at Anderson Plywood it was $ 99. Walnut dowels were around $ 2 when Rockler and Amazon were both about $ 4.
I don’t think they care what Unilocal reviews say because their bread and butter is from businesses, not woodworking dilettantes like myself. I’d say go to Anderson for decent service or if you are a n00b that needs some coddling. Come here if you want good prices.

Some of the best customer service I’ve found ANYwhere.
All I needed was a small piece of wood for a carving project. I wasn’t sure what type of wood would work best for what I was doing, so they recommended several different types, varying in hardness, and gave me half a dozen sample pieces (of generous size!) to take home and try out. I wouldn’t go anywhere else for wood.

100 years, that’s how long they’ve been in business and they are absolutely the best when it comes down to their knowledge of wood and customer service. They are an Los Angeles institution and I’ve been coming here for years for my wood projects and they never disappoint. It’s a bit out of the way, but I love the selection, attention and courtesy that they show. So if your looking to build a deck, custom fencing, a chair, or other project and need Ipe, Walnut, redwood, Doug fir or anything else then these guys are the ones.

Man this place is legit as it can possibly get when it comes to anything wood, if you need it, they will get it.
If you think you can find I on line or cheaper from a giant wood supply place like Jones or the Depot, that is all well and good; however, you are not guaranteed to get the top quality at a good price with awesome customer service.
It is like a family over there and everyone works well each other, which is always a good sign. The office has a couple of dogs chilling out, as well as a cat and a few birds in a cage.

I had a small project making ornaments with a water jet cutter and they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They took the time out to show me all types of wood and explained the quality compared to home depot. Which I found out, alot of Home Depots wood is crap. They even gave me a sample to try out so I could make a sample.
I highly recommend them for all things wood. Big or small.

You looking for hardwood lumber? Well, this is the place! They are very busy and I can see why! They’ve been here before the days of the flappers! The hardwood they sell are better than most and not as good as some! Nonetheless, I’ve been dealing with these guys for over ten years! You have to go to the main source if you want great hardwood and Bohnhoff Lumber is it!

Another sad and macabre incident; this time at Bohnhoff Lumber. I’ve patronized this lumber company for many years and still do. And I have to say that one of their employees outside the lumberyard was «cocky.» This character didn’t like to take orders as the abstract stated; nor did he had any customer empathy! He always had this intimidating look towards me when I’m there asking him to lower a pile of African Mahogany. As a result, I’m not a bit surprise he was the shooter. On the other hand; this employee had absolutely no right to take two lives away! May they both rest in peace. As for the perpetrator, hope he gets what’s coming to him!

I bought about $ 800 dollars worth of quartersawn white oak for a dining table here. The prices are competitive and the selection is amazing. This is one of the only places in L.A. where you can but rough hardwood lumber.
The wait wasn’t great, but this place had other orders to fill before me and it is worth any waiting. So plan for a wait and be surprised if not. It took an afternoon to wait for help, pick out my lumber and pay.
The workers were very helpful. They let me search the stacks and then helped me load.
I look forward to returning.
