History

Established in 2004.

Dragonfly DuLou was the brain child of former hair stylist Lana Chirco-​Baltz and actor Kirk Baltz. As new parents, they were searching all over town for a place that supported a community of families. They were looking for a spot cool enough to hang out at run by people who understood parenting who also had an impeccable taste in fashion and an inspiring sense of humor. They dreamed of a place that nurtured children’s creativity and welcomed parents’ participation.

When they found nothing, the couple toyed with the idea of starting a lifestyle boutique and club that catered to the full spectrum of parenting needs. They were convinced there were other parents like them. They were right.

On Halloween 2004, Dragonfly DuLou opened its doors to serve Los Angeles families. Since then, Dragonfly DuLou has come to be known as a funky, one-​of-​a-​kind treasure that so artfully reflects the tastes and cultures of a new generation of parents across Los Angeles.

It’s been four months since my last review and these people have ignored my reviews, emails, Instagram comments and phone calls. They are thieves and I would high suggest not shopping with them. They’ve stolen about $ 500 worth of my money by selling my inventory and never paying me. Crooks!!!

I used to wholesale clothing to this business but they never paid their bill. Customers bought my wonderful goods never knowing they were purchased on credit and never made good. I have called and spoken with them 11 times now. Eleven. It’s been 2 years. I give up. But I must leave bad feedback. Beware.

Ok so all you patrons of this amazing establishment… let me paint a picture for you. You’re enjoying a quiet Sunday no loud music just birds chirping and wind blowing through the leaves of the trees outside your window. But then breaking through this peaceful silence is the blasting sound of an amplifier drums and a electric guitar. Then a man start singing «put it in the compost yeah yeah» at the top of his lungs, and you hear screaming crying children hungry for their midmorning snack.
Despite the fact that this establishment is less than 50 ft from a residence and is not licensed to use amplifiers at all due to the space restrictions, they don’t give any f@&$s, at all. And neither do you if you bring your kids here. Thanks.

It has almost been a week since my son’s 2nd birthday party at Dragonfly DuLou. I’m still getting compliments for the fun had and the treasure space which is Dragonfly DuLou. Yes it is also a children’s store with many hip items from tees to trinkets, but I want to focus more on how happy I am with the entire production from start to finish.
I just called the place because the owners name just slipped my mind. But when I remember to edit this review I’ll be sure to name him. He is an honest hard working man that gave me confidence from the very start that Sammy, my son, will have a great party. His suggestions were perfect from pizza delivery to the Bubble man for entertainment. These two hours have been so full of fun and great vibe I really am so grateful. I’m so happy that my friends who are parents came here because like me; this treasure is a new discovery for them.
It’s fully equipped and ready. Trampoline, several car things for kids, bathroom, outside patio at area with wonderful cheerful paintings on the wall. The adults had a blast as well.
So accommodating and the price (in comparison to other spots) is way too cheap. Knowing what I know and experienced now, I think the prices are too low. And I don’t have money. I’m a single mom, work hard; but this is money well spent. I had a break and enjoyed myself with my son and our guests. This is priceless.

Matt B. once described Los Feliz as a neighborhood of aging hipsters, and as proof, he presented the hipster baby stores on Hillhurst and Vermont. I pass by Dragonfly DuLou almost every day, and I often stop to admire the cute toys and clothes in the window. When I have my own hipster baby, I’m sure I’ll stop in often.
But since that’s still a while off, I’ll write this quick review as a non-​parent and infrequent baby good buyer. After what could’ve been my thousandth stroll past its windows, I finally walked into Dragonfly DuLou to get a Christmas present for a new baby of my acquaintance, little Ella T. I was walking my dog, and the store owner was nice enough to welcome us both inside. There were a few kids and moms in the store, and they all gave my dog lots of attention.
The layout was charming and simple, and there were lots of cute things everywhere – clothes, stuffed animals, unique little toys. I browsed for a while and picked a set of blocks, printed with elements from the periodic table. (Papa T. is a scientist, so this was an A+ present.) It went over well, at least with the parents. I’ll have to ask Ella what she thought when she’s older.
Anyway, I’ll be coming back here next time I need to buy something for a baby. As my friends keep getting pregnant, I expect to give Dragonfly DuLou more business pretty soon.

My two year old and I attended the baila baila Spanish class with Fernanda and were very pleased with it. I would highly recommend it and definitely plan on going back before the sessions are over. We also did a little damage in the super cute shop. They really have a great selection of unique toys and clothing. Not what you find in the chain stores. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is because I feel that the service at the shop could have been better as far as having someone more interested in customer service perhaps a little warmer specially due to the nature of the business.

This is a review of Music Together at Dragonfly… Sheila is THE BEST! My daughter and I have been going for the past 5 months and we LOVE her class. I look forward to going every week. It’s fun for both of us and I’ve met some other great parents in class.

Our son Kamran has been coming to see Sheila in Music Together since he was 6 months old. He’s 2 now and he still can’t get enough of the music and loves Sheila! Even though we live in Pasadena, we still prefer coming out to this location for our classes. And then the fun outdoor activities after class (trampoline, tricycles, etc) are lots of fun for the little ones as well!

We have been going here once a week since we moved to the neighborhood 2 years ago. I like to shop for unique birthday gifts and I have bought art off their walls made by local artists.
However the best thing about this place is the classes. My daughters have taken Music Together with Ellen and Sheila and loved it. They are now both in ballet with teacher Michelle who is by far the most creative and fun ballet teacher we have ever met.
My kids love to hang out in their back space which has a variety of wheely toys and a trampoline. I do wish they would put a net around the bottom of the trampoline to stop small kids from crawling under. It is not safe, especially between classes when the back space gets very crowded and it is hard to find your child amongst the chaos of children in tutus.

We held our son’s 5th Birthday here and it was fantastic! The staff were very nice and the owner, Kirk, was incredibly helpful from start to finish: planning, setting up, and making sure everything went smoothly during the party.
Dragonfly DuLou isn’t cheap per se, but you get so much for what you pay for and they don’t nickel and dime you the way they do at other children’s party places, ie: no charge for extra children, no extra charge for bringing in your own cake (Romp!), no service charge, etc. You pay for the time and the space and they pretty much let you throw the party you want with the number of children you want. Hooray!
Kirk arranged for a «Bubble Guy» to entertain in the lovely studio, which the kids and parents really enjoyed. Our son was having so much fun running around the yard, jumping on the trampoline and driving the Plasma cars, that he didn’t even want to stop for the show.
My only small «decorator» note would be that it might be time to reupholster the outdoor cushions. .. Otherwise, it was the perfect place for a sweet, low-​fi, good vibe kid’s party. Thanks, Kirk!

We signed up for classes for our 2-​year-​old son and while I wait for him I get to shoot baskets outside on a 6-​foot-​tall backboard which makes me feel tall and powerful (I can even dunk when no kids are around to laugh at me).
So how could I not like this place.

As someone who lives in the neighborhood, I have to say I’m very thankful for this place. It’s a perfect spot to pick up a gift for a new baby or a last minute birthday party. Also, the playground in the back is a perfect spot for bigger kids to burn off some steam and try some of the wheeled toys out (with daddy) so I can do some uninterrupted shopping.
There are some pricey things in the store, but I’ve found that there are interesting gifts available at every price point.
No one has ever been rude to me there, but I’m not, in general, a rude person, so that’s not an issue I usually have.
Overall, I would recommend DD to anyone who’s looking for baby gear.

I dunno. I tried to like this place, really I did. I want to support local businesses, and I really like unusual and interesting stuff for children. This place sells cute things, that’s for sure. But it’s all so trendy and hipster and overpriced. They get defensive when they don’t carry something you’re looking for. And they gave me a really crappy attitude this last time when I went in to find a book (ANY BOOK!) for a little baby (which, by the way, they don’t carry and don’t seem interested in carrying– *NO* BABY BOOKS?). Plus, we sold some CDs to them a couple years ago and they never paid us for them. Overall, thumbs down. Sorry.

I went in here looking for a birthday gift for a 1 year old girl. Tried to put myself in the mindset of a baby, and find things that either were 1) brightly colored or 2) musical but not annoying to parents. I was really surprised with the selection for such a cozy store. They had lots of things that I had as a kid — sock monkey, puzzle of the united states, ABC blocks (a is for apple, b is for boy, etc). I settled on a alligator that you can pull on a string that makes clickity-​clack noises as you ‘walk’ it.
Clothing did seem pricey (e.g., $ 45 for a tiny baby’s shirt — though it was totally aaaDORable) but the toys’ pricing seemed pretty standard. They have a lot of eco-​friendly ones, priced $ 15 thru $ 30 mostly, depending on it’s complexity.
Free gift wrapping.
Street/​metered parking is available, but lucky me I live right around the corner. So this place’ll be really great/​convenient for me when all my friends start having babies. I shall return.

I love their merchandise. The prices are a little steep, but they have truly unique and thoughtful stuff in here. Great place to buy baby gifts for the person you really like. I love all of their musical and wooden toys. My daughter has several things from here, and they have stood the test of time.
We also attend Music Together classes in the back studio. The teacher, Addy Park, is incredibly good with children. We’ve been coming for three sessions now, and will start a new one in the fall. I can put the CD in any time my little one is melting down in the backseat, and like magic, she will calm right down. Plus, I have fun too.
The staff here is really friendly, and the owner is very hands on.

Great store for your über-​hip babies.
Everything from cooler Jeans than I own, to onesies with faces of Bob Marley, Elvis, Hendrix Gandhi and other influential people on them.
Great little store for cool kids who are too young to shop for themselves.
Prices are not cheap, but since when was cool, inexpensive.
Takes the KCRW card, and the people who work are really sweet and incredibly helpful.

Such an amazing place!
Not only do they have great kids clothing and gear (diaper bags, blankets), but they have lots of old-​fashioned toys that you aren’t likely to find anywhere else!
This is a great community center for Los Feliz/​Silver Lake parents. They have a huge courtyard that has a wide range of classes during the week and if you don’t have a backyard of your own, you can rent out The Hub for birthday parties and events.
I can’t say enough great things about this place!
