These were the best fish and chips I’ve had since visiting England! I’ve been looking for a good, traditional fish and chips place and just thought it didn’t exist here — it does and this is it. As for the other reviewers saying it was too greasy, they clearly haven’t been to England and had the original.

I’ve been coming to this location for since 1997 and I enjoy it but it has some flaws: THEBAD: Place is ugly, no AC, uncomfortable seating. They could really use some freshening up to look nice. It looks like a 1986 throwback. .49 cents«convenience» charge to use a debit card which is illegal. No free drink refills. Their house brand tarter sauce is to thin. It should be thicker. THEGOOD. The food is GREAT! Price are GREAT! The batter and fish seem to be always cooked to perfection. The friend clams are my favorite. I’ve never had the chicken so I can’t comment on that. But why come here for chicken anyway? The chips are great too and always served fresh and hot. Try the fried clams!

Fries were dry, stale and COLD as if they’d been sitting out all day. And to top it off? I open the bag and there’s a nice brown HAIR in my fries. Called back and the man answering the phones was kind enough to offer a free meal. But I have to say thanks but no thanks. First and last time for me.

Nothing has any flavor place needs to be redone and an ac needs to be installed the hood fan shouldn’t be doubled as a ac only reason to me even giving 3 stars is for the woman who helped me out nice lady besides that i would never cone back ya its cheap but with cheap comes a price tried the double catch it seriously sucked and it is against the law to charge people extra for using a debit card try seasoning your stuff and maybe go get some people standing in front of the home depo to come and paint your place if you need help with seasonings message me i can help

Absolutely horrible experience at H. Salt. I recently had a craving for fish and chips and made the huge mistake of going to the H. Salt in East Hollywood. I arrived about 15 minutes before closing and ordered something. I then noticed something else on the menu that I wanted to add to my order and the person working behind the counter refused to make an addition to my order. He’s the guy who has worked there for decades — glasses, unfriendly, rude. He said they were closed and I told him that I really wanted to add something to my order and that I had entered the establishment before the closing time. Mind you… my original order was still being fried, so I hadn’t even received that yet. When he refused, I then told him that this was terrible customer service. Without a word, he then opened the register and practically threw the money I had paid back to me. I’m sure the food I ordered was thrown in the trash. I told him I was going to call the corporate office/franchise owner and he could not have cared less. HONESTLY…people treat dogs better than the way I was treated at H. Salt. I contacted the corporate office and explained the situation to an answering machine. AND I NEVERRECIEVED A CALLBACK !!! Bottom Line —— Extremely rude and horrible service. Apathetic and uncaring corporate office. Obviously a franchise owner that has no desire or care to problem solve or provide quality goods/customer service. ***** Read all of the other negative reviews on this site about service/goods and know that this rude and unacceptable treatment is not going to be tolerated. Shame on all of those involved.

Never judge a book by its cover, it may look like a shanty town restaurant, but the food is fresh, absolutely delicious, and most importantly, cheap. Seriously, if you love fish and chips, do not pass this place up, it will definitely surprise you!

(Dined 02÷20÷15 F @ 1:00pm): The original seafood restaurant when I was growing up, they’re still worth their weight in salt! It was turning out to be a lazy Friday for me, a friend was close to my neighborhood, and earlier in the week we talked about grubbing at H. Salt Fish & Chips close to Barnsdall Park. Once I got his text, I dove from my bowl and power-stroked my way there to meet him for some cheap eats. It’s been forever since I last ate here so I was kind of excited. Let’s see if this place has stood the test of time!: [ONIONRINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT — 3.0 of 5STARS] Onion Rings($ 1.99) — Right off the bat, the price was great and the portion size was decent. Small to medium-sized lightly golden rings, each was piping hot when you bit into them. However, the onion itself oftentimes slid out from its more crispy-than-crunchy batter shell which was never fun. A tad bland, so I used the aid of Ketchup, malt vinegar and tartar sauce to give them more flavor. Good but not great. London Deal($ 5.20) — This meal included two big pieces of Alaskan Pollock fish, a heaping amount of chips, and a tiny container of tartar sauce(extra tartar sauce was available at $ 0.25 each which I didn’t buy). Again, you couldn’t beat the value of this meal with the portion size, especially when compared to the fish & chips I had earlier in the week at The Lost Knight in Echo Park. In true British fashion this meal also lacked in flavor, so I used the same condiments as I did for the onion rings in addition with several dashes of pepper. The krinkle fries were plentiful, fat, moist and had a nice crunch; not a dry fry on my paper plate! The fish batter had a wonderful slightly darker golden color with a subtle crunch. The fish itself was meaty, moist, thick and flaked apart rather easily but never fell apart. After I finished the onion rings and fries, one fish was more than enough, but I powered through and blissfully ate both. Credit Card Usage Fee($ 0.49) — Yes, they’re small-time like that. Annoying as hell… Service — A simple«walk-up and order» kind of place , you scanned the menu up on the wall behind the counter, paid for your food, given a number, grabbed your drink, picked a seat/table, grabbed any condiments and table settings, waited until your number was called, and then picked-up your food back at the counter. Once you finished, you dumped your trash into the receptacles and you were out of there. Not much service to speak of. Parking(Free) — They shared a decent-sized parking lot with several other business in a gritty old rundown strip mall. If needed, you probably could’ve also parked at the nearby Rite-Aid strip mall right around the corner. Metered street parking was also available along the main drag of Hollywood Blvd. Atmosphere, décor, ambience — A rundown yet clean shack that looked more like a donut shop or ice cream parlor, it held several standard fast-food tables and chairs along with a couple sideway patio tables, a few promotional posters hung on the walls, and wide-opening doors with an annoying sensor alarm each time someone passed through. A very good amount of natural lighting shown through the front doors and glass windows while there were still areas of soul-sucking electric fluorescent lighting. There were no TVs or background music. FYI… this seemed a bit like a homeless hang-out in case you’re skittish about that. Attire — Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Overall, I’d visit the East Hollywood location of H. Salt Fish & Chips again because of the value proposition alone. I had fond memories of my family’s visits to the Glendale location, so this chain would always hold a special place in my heart. The food was good at best and certainly not exactly the healthiest. The menu was extremely limited to all-things fried fish, shrimp, and various vegetables. I found fairly good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above(total bill was around $ 8.00; no tip required). And, although they accepted credit cards, not mine of choice… AMEX! 3.5STARS

I gave this place two stars due to the service. Once I placed my order I had to stand there and watch the cook finish texting on her phone and then have a 3 minute conversation before she could prepare my food. It’s a shame the lack of pride some workers display.

No. Just no. Ordered chicken strips and chips. The chicken tastes old and has no flavor but old and fishy… yumm fishy chicken… The chips were nothing special. Also they tried to charge me .49 cents to use my card which is illegal in California. «No retailer… may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check or similar means…» Statute: Cal. You get what you pay for at this place. It’s run down, and looks like a Fish N Chip place from the 80s. It’s clearly on it’s last legs as well. .50 charge for debit/credit card, and they charge for extra condiments. Fish is good. Fries are soggy. But it’s cheap. They also closed early because their employees clearly wanted to get their weekend started. But I’ll stop being a pompous asshole!

Overall, it was OK. We actually went because we had coupons. We’d never been to an H. Salt Fish & Chips before. This particular location surprised me with cheaper menu prices than the coupons we had. Definitely a huge PRO for us. The gentleman who helped us seemed a little annoyed that we didn’t exactly know what we wanted. He wasn’t rude, but he maintained a very serious expression. It took about 15 minutes to get our food. We went at 11:30am, which was half an hour after they opened. There was one customer in front of us. The food was OK. Like many mentioned, it’s very bland. My fiancé got the«Double Catch» and said he liked their batter. However, after we got home, he said it sat weird in his stomach. He asked for some ranch to go along with the fried zucchini that comes with his meal and had to pay extra. I ordered the«Mini Shrimp». It wasn’t very flavorful. It tasted more like fried bread & shrimp. We ordered a side of hush puppies, they were probably the most flavorful dish we had. The«chips»(fries) didn’t even have salt on them. The worst part of this experience was the flies & gnats. They were all over the dining room. They don’t have those ecolab lights that control the flying pests, so I would recommend them investing in them. I was in a full out battle over guarding my food.

I love fish and chips I guess I’m not picky since this is the only place I can go to get strictly that. People say that its bland but I guess my taste buds suck but then again you get what you pay for I mean come on you expect high quality fish n chips that cost less than $ 10 lol. I usually get the combo with the different types of seafood n chips its pretty good they give you vinegar, tartar, and cocktail sauce if you get prawns. The place to me is good if you want some lunch or dinner and need it quick.

«You sound like you’re from London!» FISH&CHIPSFASTFOOD… YES! I ordered the fish and chips is the standard. It tasted fresh and crispy. I also liked the fried zucchini which is a good balance to the rest of the fried food. I am really happy a place like this exists and it is a great alternative to the other fried places in town. Great food. Fast service. Low prices. YUM!

Fried, fried, fried, and flavorless. That sums it up. Too much batter, fries are flat and soggy, tartar sauce is watery and vinegar is also flavorless. Malt vinegar costs 3 dollars. If you use your credit card its 49 cents added to run it. I ordered about 10 bucks worth of food with 2 fish chips and hush puppies. Pepsi tastes like it was filtered through a gym sock. Only saving grace is the nice asian dude and the hushpuppies. My food was sitting on the counter and lady came all the way outside to tell me that my food was on the counter and to come get it… why couldnt she just bring it with her? Then maybe it will merit that begging tip jar on the counter. No thanks. Too many other spots around to come back. How is this place still in business?

Pretty good fish and chips! The popcorn shrimp is my favorite so far! Mmm! I did leave wanting more! Make sure you order a lot! Lol I will try one of the bigger combos next time. Tartar sauce is delicious. The coleslaw isn’t the best but it was still good.

A few things about this place… Its been here since the beginning of time, when it used to be called H Salt Dinosaurs & Potatoes. Buttttt… my first time eating here was 2013. hahahaha Found it with my buddy CJ. The fish is Great! I usually get the 3 piece meal, and though the fish tastes awesome fresh out the fry basket, it taste better with a sprinkle of salt… and EXTREEEEEEMELY better with that Maple Vinegar. HOTDAYUM!!! The chicken sucks, cause its friend in oil thats had a million fish swim through it, but… at 99 cents a piece, their scallops are the BEST thing on the menu. #BANG #Grublife

We used to come to this place a long time ago when we lived closer to the area but has not been in a long time. I was at the Bank of America across the street one day and saw the sign to this place. It was nearing lunch time and I was kinda feeling nostalgic so I stopped by. Nothing has really changed much to this place and it is still the same as I remembered it. The place has just opened for the day so there was only a couple of people who were in line to order. Ordered the seafood combo but substituted hush puppies for fries. The other order is a 2-piece fish and fries. The prices for the combo was actually pretty cheap. The seafood combo had actually some battered veggies thrown into the mix. There was actually more veggies than the actual seafood save for the huge piece of fish. The hush puppies were a little smaller than I am used to but tasted pretty good. The fries was okay but nothing spectacular. The fish were a little on the bland side but the tartar sauce which they sent with the order made it taste much better. The staff were friendly and service was quick. Plenty of parking spots on the parking lot up front. The place has an 80’s feel to it but clean and orderly.

Back when fish and chips were a common thing in LA, the Bee Gees and ABBA were probably also in the minds and hearts of the public. This place has a dreary look to it, nothing has changed since it opened decades ago, but I actually kind of like it. H Salts food is made on the spot and despite the name, is made the english way, so not very salty. Prices are super cheap(particularly for seafood), clientele is interesting and parking is easy to find because its next to a Rite Aid.
