Love their caterpillar rolls, albacore sashimi with ponzu, and spicy tuna/avocado/cucumber rolls. The quality is consistently fresh and Hide isn’t too bad on the wallet. There’s always a line no matter what time of day so be prepared to wait.

I’ve been going to Hide since high school and this place has been here for as long as I can remember. It is a somewhat quirky sushi restaurant because it is so old school and popular. Here are some pro tips: 1. Cash only; they have an ATM in the place in case you forget. 2. Free valet parking in the back, which is key, given how busy the street parking can get on Sawtelle. 3. They have things that are off the menu, like yellowtail and salmon belly and broiled yellowtail collar. You can also put quail egg on pretty much any sushi you’d like, though it makes more sense on the roe and uni. 4. Their sweet shrimp is legit, but can be very pricey. Make sure you ask how much it is. One time, I ordered it and the shrimp that came were like mini lobsters. But that one thing was more than $ 10. They will also fry the heads up for you. 5. The owner wears glasses and is usually there preparing sushi, just like he has been doing for 20+ years. 6. Try to go on off hours, say, right when they open at 11a or before/after the lunch & dinner rush(3p, 5p, 8p). Anyway, there are a lot of sushi options in LA but this is one of my favorite spots. Love Hide!

For sushi purists. This place sticks to what it does best. Sushi is fresh and well portioned. Sushi chefs are Japanese(some people care about this). The menu is simple and straightforward. Ambience is lacking but the food is delicious and well priced.

Cash only, but there’s an ATM inside if you really need it. My go-to sushi in the area, mostly because their ankimo is fantastic. Not much in the way of rolls here, but if you want some solid nigiri, check this place out! The ankimo is my favourite — they give you a huge pile of monkfish liver(great with ponzu). Prices are reasonable for the quality you get — if you want cheap sushi and aren’t too fussed about the fish itself, there are definitely better places to go, but if you’re just craving something fresh and authentic, Hide is a good choice. Parking lot in the back for Hide customers only.

Started going here since early 2000 when I worked on the same street, but it’s been a few years since I’ve been back now that I’m on the eastside. I have to say it’s still the same awesome place for really good sushi. No frills. Just good, straight up sushi. The 80s décor is endearing. Don’t forget to get dessert across the street while you’re at it. Parking lot is to the left back for Hide. Validation only.

This is my go-to place for sushi. If you’re looking for creative rolls with equally creative names you should go elsewhere. But if you’re looking for fresh, authentic sushi, definitely check this place out. Very reasonable prices especially given the quality and generous portions. The main drawbacks are 1) cash only(don’t worry, there’s an ATM in the restaurant in case you forget) and 2) long wait(like any good restaurant in the area). As I’m writing this review I’m reminded that I’m due for another trip there!

Salmon & tuna sashimi Eel Mackerel Spanish mackerel Halibut Yellowtail Monkfish liver Salmon belly Toro The eel had the perfect amount of sauce. I preferred the mackerel over the Spanish mackerel. The yellowtail was especially good as was the monkfish liver and the salmon belly and toro were amazing. Next time: Sea urchin, yellowtail belly, halibut fin

Honestly, my favorite sushi in town. Suggestions:(this will be short and sweet) 1. Monkfish liver(Ankimo) — it’s the best i’ve ever tasted anywhere. 2. Albacore is great here– best in the area, that i’ve tried before. 3. Spanish Mackerel Cash only– there’s an atm in the place.

There is something so comforting about this mainstay sushi joint in the Sawtelle zone. I recently started frequenting this spot after about a 15 year hiatus, and it’s exactly as I left it. I love that about Hide! It’s a no frills, cash only, traditional sushi spot. Fresh, generous portions, affordable, yummy. Hide loyalists are so loyal. Toro: thick, fresh, fatty Yellowtail belly: also thick, fresh, fatty Ankimo sushi: not like I’ve ever had it. Granular, but delicious Uni: «butter from the sea» as Nadine calls it Negi-toro roll: my mom would call it the«economy version.» It’s larger than any negi-toro roll I’ve ever had, but it’s good Salmon skin handroll: ironically smaller than I’ve ever had, but all the necessary ingredients make it magical and crunchy Mirugai: appropriately crunchy, but not the greatest, and I LOVE mirugai Albacore: very nice Pros: affordable, fresh, thick pieces, doesn’t close between lunch and dinner, free validated parking Cons: cash only(ATM available), long waits, service eh(wish everyone was happier around here) 4.5 stars(5 stars if it was happier around here, and if they took credit cards!)

Who goes to a sushi resto and doesn’t order sushi? Why we do, that’s who. And it wasn’t that the sashimi delivered to an adjacent table, while we sipped complimentary green tea, perused the menu, wasn’t spectacular, we just weren’t in the mood, next time for sure, seated at the sushi bar close to the action! Craving tempura, that’s exactly what I ordered. My guy answered a similar calling with the salmon teriyaki dinner. Both come with starters: pickled cabbage plus steaming hot, savory, tofu accented, miso soup. He stuck with tea but later helped me nearly finish a bottle of cold-draft sake,(beer is also available). Those delish starters, I coulda stopped with and did, as I was fearful I wouldn’t have room for my much-anticipated tempura. Unless my feeding gene needs to be rebooted, pricewise(our tab was under $ 40 pre-gratuity), Hide(«Hee-day») serves up a whole lotta food per person. Tempura(three shrimp, six vegetables) crispy perfection, tsukemono with sesame seed AND rice. Delicious! Soup kicked in, too full, ended up taking home veggies, rice for lunch the next day. Definitely better in house, but glad I got ‘em to go for a quick, still tasty reheat. Tender, flavorful salmon teriyaki(my solitary bite confirmed) with fresh salad, perfect rice, renewed my sweetie’s clean plate club charter membership. Cooked food is well executed, presented. Sushi we observed, likewise. Cash only, ATM access inside. Service is gracious, pleasant, and attentive. Hide is immaculate, from restrooms to disinfected menus(observed a server doing so with sanitary wipes). Meter park Sawtelle Boulevard or free with valet behind resto(don’t forget to tip).

Came here after work with my foodie coworker and I was quite impressed. Really good sushi spot in a busy little area with a lot of choices around. I left the ordering up to my friends and they did a great job. We had salmon, scallop, special scallop, salmon eggs w/quail egg, and a few other things I can’t remember, but it was all amazing. Everything tastes super delicious! This is a great place to try in the Los Angeles area. We came around lunch time and it was really busy so I can imagine being crazy during peak dinner hours. Service was really good too. Multiple servers/staff were available to help out getting us the little extra things we needed. Overall I highly recommend this spot if you are in the mood for some excellent sushi.

I wasn’t very impressed by this sushi spot. The service was horrible but I didn’t take that into consideration since afterwards I found out that the server was new. The fish was fresh and tasted fine but I didn’t think it was better than most other fresh sushi restaurants. I would probably go to some of my favorite spots over this one but would definitely not complain if my friends suggested to go here again next time

I used to be the biggest fan of Hide back in the day, and I had a chance to come back recently for a visit. Still crowded as always, I personally felt that the sushi was nothing special. I tried albacore, salmon, uni, scallop, mentaiko roll, and catalina roll. We also had their scallop dynamite and tempura dinner. Scallop dynamite was a bit of a mess with baked mayo but for some reason, it was very runny. Tempura was not bad, but nothing impressive. Sushi was the same for me– it wasn’t bad, but nothing was amazing, either. I almost feel that people love this place due to tradition, loyalty, and nostalgia. It’s been around for a long time, and most people have been coming for years. It was one of the first authentic sushi places in westside, so that counts a lot. Still cash only. Service is super fast, almost so fast that I felt rushed. We ordered our sushi and literally got it 2 minutes later. Wish they had larger bottles of beer. We were done with our dinner in about 45 minutes. Wait is not too bad if you’re ok with table over the sushi bar.

It was first time came here. I sat down at the bar but sadly sushi chefs looked busy not even able to say hi to me. I ordered ankimo, aji, amaebi, uni, salmon, seabream. It was all fresh and delicious! Overall, it was all good. I will definitely come back soon I had a sweet shrimp and It was really giant and chewy! Service is average. Btw I took some pictures with iphone 6s and It looks awesome with great camera lol

No «crazy» rolls here, just simple, traditional Japanese sushi, made by skilled Japanese chefs using the freshest of ingredients. If you want that — you will LOVE Hide. Yellowtail scallion roll(Negi-hama maki) is just those two ingredients but OMGIT’S SOGOOD! Chirashi is the standout. It’s normally really expensive at other places, not only is it the cheapest I’ve ever seen anywhere, it’s the BEST I’ve ever had. The rice is mixed with sesame seeds, bits of seaweed, and shredded egg. It’s… AMAZING. Everything is VERY reasonably priced, but I always end up spending like $ 40 on myself here… because it’s all so reasonably priced and I can’t stop eating it!

Been coming here forever, but its no longer my favorite go to sushi place on the Westside. Sushi and sashimi wise, it’s still the same, fresh. However, this joint gives me an impression of a FAST food restaurant of the«get in & get out» kind of feel. By the way, that’s ok along with the«CASHONLY» payment deal. BUT, WAIT, so across the street Asahi Raman used to be CASH only and now they’ll take your CCard with minimum of $ 15, and that is way cheap compared to easily coming out of HIDE with at least $ 30 a person if not more. Maybe for lunch special of $ 11 with tip, «CASHONLY» makes sense, but come on HIDESUSHI!!! You’re no longer the BANG for the buck in town folks! Even if I do carry thousands of our GREAT American $ or a wad of cash on me, I would spend it wisely, don’t you think??? By the way, I like to have my receipt, please!!! But I think since your price is no longer like it use to be, I rather go somewhere else and spend a fortune with my CCard. At least I can get more miles so I can fly FIRSTCLASS more often… hehehehe, hahahaha…, If you like to «get in, get out», swallow your raw fish and gulp down your saki and pay a good CASH $$$, then go here. I like to enjoy the taste of my food and drinks and still get my frequent flyer miles! 1 star for the valet parking and 1 star for the fresh fish. Sorry HIDE, you’ve got competitions out there, better keep up with the times! I’ll be back only when you’d take my CCard. PEACEOUT!

Wow 5 stars all the way! Yay! :) I had the pleasure of coming here last night for dinner. We got to the restaurant quite early around 5:30pm since I didn’t have lunch and I was famished. Wow the place was packed! They only had a few seats left at the sushi bar which we gladly took. By the time 6 o’clock rolled around there was a bunch of people waiting to be seated. Thank God we got here earlier than later! I have to say that the sushi is pretty darn good here. Plus it helps that the prices aren’t that bad for the quality of fish that they have. I also love how they give you a fat piece of fish on their sushi. More bang for your bucks! Nomnom. My favorites of the night was definitely the albacore, salmon belly, and monkfish liver… Surprisingly the monkfish liver was pretty good despite the fact that I’m not much of a fan of liver… Their uni was pretty good as well. Nomnom. Im still drooling looking at the pictures from last night. The service was on par. Our sushi chef was cool and the waitresses cleared our plates rather quickly and refilled our waters without us having to ask. I had no complaints in the service department. The only negative is that the restaurant was kinda hot. It would have helped if they had a better AC system esp since the place was crowded w people dining, waiting, and serving… Lol :) Overall very impressed w this place and it’s up there with some of my favorite sushi restaurants! Yay! :) PS. CASHONLY

Wanted fresh sushi but didn’t want to pay $$$$. Came across this place and decided to give it a try, glad we did. It’s CASHONLY(there’s an ATM inside) and pretty small. It was full when we came Sunday evening with a bunch of people waiting, but our wait time was only 15 minutes. Pretty traditional and the fish is fresh and delicious at a really decent price. We each had the #7 nigiri dinner combo and shared a spicy tuna roll. Cuts of fish are on the bigger/thicker side here. Spicy tuna is cut into only four pieces but four very big pieces. Loved the spicy tuna, it’s a generous portion of tuna and I love that it wasn’t all mayo-ed up like at a lot of places. Nigiri was really good too! Liked that they let me sub yellowtail for the surf clam and octopus(+$ 0.80 for each sub). Yellowtail was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, mackerel was really good and flavorful, salmon was disappointing. Would definitely come again. Plus, the parking lot to the left of Hide is free for 1 ½ hours with validation!

My review is only for the omakase experience. I brought a friend here for his birthday, and I gotta say we were both impressed by the generous portions of fish on the nigiri, the variety of sushi we were served, and how just cheap our meal was! It was about $ 55/person excluding tip for about 11 different dishes of sushi. My sweet shrimp was still moving after it was served on my plate, amazing! I’ll definitely be returning here soon! As with most parking on sawtelle, street parking on the residential streets one block down form the restaurants is your best bet!
