Jessica and Hoopdawgz performed at an event I held in downtown LA. Jessica totally blew away the crowd, both with her hooping and her personal story that she shared afterwards with the people — many approached her and I and told us how inspiring she was. Here was a sample video: Wow!

Spinning. Twirling. Jumping through them. Doing everything short of lighting fire to their hoops … Hoopdawgz dazzled with their display. We saw them perform at a fundraiser in a rennovated, historically protected building. Fire marshalls tend to frown on pyrotechnics or fire dancing in such structures. Some of the flag dancing and light twirling techniques fall into the category of poi twirling, originally from New Zealand. Afterwards, at the courtyard reception, one of the hoop dancers told me that she and one other girl, were indeed capable of firing up their hoops when appropriate. She was terrific. Just a real sponge for any kind of dancing challenge. She told me that she had originally been rigorously trained in Japanese classical dancing, as had her grandmother, who danced into her 80’s. Now she was ready to take on anything. Capoiera was going to be her next challenge. The girls who performed as a troupe for this event also perform separately. Don’t get any ideas dawgz. They’re cute but they can set fire to you. You are not a historically protected building. * * * * * As noted, we saw Hoopdawgz as a performance. It took place at the Ivy Substation. My understanding is that they also offer hoop classes. I haven’t taken any of their classes, and can’t vouch for the quality of the teachers or the studio. I’m not of the impression that the women who performed that evening are the actual teachers. The classes take place at: Synthesis Dance Center 4200 Lankerhsim Blvd North Hollywood Ca, 91602 818−754−1760
