History
Established in 1919.
Immaculate Conception Parish has a long and rich history. Located in the center of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ traditional base, this corridor along 9th Street included the offices of the archdiocese, The Tidings, Catholic Charities and Cotter’s, the famous church supply store. Many of the leaders of the church were associated with the parish over the years, including Archbishop Cantwell, Cardinals McIntyre, Manning and Mahony, and visitors have included the Pope and Mother Teresa. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary opened the school and the first graduating class was in 1919. In its early days the school had four classrooms with two grade levels per classroom. Since 1984 the school has been staffed by a dedicated group of lay teachers. Mary Ann Murphy has led as ICS principal since 1987. On September 16, 1987, the students and faculty of Immaculate Conception had the distinct privilege of welcoming His Holiness Pope John Paul II… To learn more visit us at ics-la.org.
Meet the Manager
Principal Mary Ann M.
Manager
It hardly seems possible that it has been a quarter-century since I accepted the position to serve as principal at Immaculate Conception School. In those first few weeks in 1987 we were excitedly preparing for a few special guests, First Lady of the United States Nancy Reagan and His Holiness Pope John Paul II. I knew from the very beginning we were on special ground here at ICS, and that sense of spirit, dedication, faith and joy has remained constant.
For over 25 years it has been a tremendous privilege to witness the growth and progress of hundreds of students through our special halls, led by outstanding teachers, committed parents and countless volunteers embracing the ICS mission. You, the students, have returned our efforts by advancing in life to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country and, more importantly, growing into fine, well-rounded, involved citizens and caring, nurturing and spirited adults.
