If I could give them zero stars I would. Never mind that the sushi and food is good. The service and whatnot make this a do not go to place. It took a while for someone to take our drinks… the place was empty. We received a menu and the guy seemed to disappear. When he finally took our drinks it took him 5 minutes to come out with them. Then it took 20 minutes for him to take our food order. We informed him we were ready and he went inside and took a while to come back out. Second: Constantly ignored. No one stopped by our tables to refill the water cups. Or ask if we need our drinks refilled. Nothing. Food was set down and it seemed like everyone disappeared. Yet they magically showed up when people walked in. Third: so by that time I’m about to blow but I kept my cool. Towards the end I inform him how bad the service was and how thats not the way you treat customers and he tells me «ok thank you and have a nice day». Well ok then. Fine. I will have a nice day and not ever come back. Asshole. I’ll admit I used to come here once a month last year. And i enjoyed it. But then I started noticing over time that their service was getting worse and worse. In the beginning it was awesome. Not so much anymore. Pity.

I LOVETHISPLACE. enough said. OKJK I want to add more stuff about this place. First of all, it’s very intimate because the space is small. The mood and ambience is very relaxing and romantic. I would take someone here on a date. Too bad I’m taken. LOL Anyways, because it’s small and intimate, you might end up eavesdropping on someone else’s convo and don’t even know it. =P The food here is DELICIOUSSSS. OMG I LOVETHEIRSUSHI. Order the black pearl; its an orgasm melting in your mouth. MMMMM. The sauce they use is soooo good and any fried sushi wins my heart. What else is good on their sushi menu? The rainbow roll is a must for me, and here at Iron Grill, they use fresh fishies for the rainbow roll. They also have a CHINESEMENU. Why would you want to eat chinese food when you can have PANDAEXPRESS? HAHA. The Chinese food here is whatevs. My friend and I ordered their honey-walnut shrimp one time and wasn’t very pleased with it. There was HELLAAA glazed sugar on our shrimps and walnuts. –____– We ended up finishing half off it altogether. Service here is amazing. The waiter who has helped us the past few times was very attentive and accomodating. Anything we needed, he fulfilled it. We’ve always tipped him big for his great service. It’s sad to see Iron Grill empty sometimes cuz GYUKAKU steals ALLOFTHEIRCUSTOMERS. haha jk I love Gyu Kaku too(it’s another review I have to do =P) Both places have mouth-watering, DELISH foods. OHBTW, ALLSUSHIARE50% off. REPEATALLSUSHIAREHALFOFF. SCOREEEEEE. So it’s sorta like going to a sushi buffet and getting hella sushi for like $ 20 or $ 30 bucks. NOWGOGETFATBITCHES. haha =P

This used to be my favorite Sushi place. It was cheap(their 50% off any sushi item was awesome) and the sushi was not half bad. But now the 50% any sushi item is gone, so now we are left with overpriced«not half bad» sushi. I saw overpriced because at 50% off, it was adequate pricing for the sushi quality. I don’t feel like I get any bang for my buck any longer. They do have other non-sushi items, Chinese food, etc. But it lacks the awesomeness of 50% off sushi. Don’t think I’ll be heading their way unless their prices go down.

I was craving sushi; bf was craving Chinese. This place had both, so no one had to compromise. :p We ordered delivery online thru Eat 24 Hours. We had: orange chicken shanghai lo mein(w/beef) red dragon roll alaska roll The rolls were tiny. Made me think of Ralph’s sushi. The red dragon roll(tuna on spicy tuna) wasn’t bad. The other roll(salmon, avocado, cucumber) was meh. Orange chicken was too chewy. I actually really liked the lo mein. Seemed a little pricey. There was no 50% off sushi deal online! :( 2.5 stars.

I come here almost every Sunday with my close group of friends. We started this tradition around June of last year. There are many lackluster aspects to this restaurant but the benefits will outshine the negatives. Let me begin with 50% off Sushi… yeah yeah yeah I know you can lower the price but then where goes the pizazz and the idea of thinking, «DAYAMN Son I just scored a deal!» I’ve had some bad sushi but this is great quality for the price. One of the charming qualities is the soundtrack which is the same cd on loop of piano covers. The service is mediocre but I love James, the Sunday day waiter. Another fun quality is the glass window which allows you to scope out the walking by-standers which is a plus if you’re a people watcher like myself. I always get the Triple Sushi which comes with miso soup and salad. You find yourself asking weird questions like«why do they have three podiums?» «who designed the interior» «why do all my friends have their plates first but not me» The point is it doesn’t matter! You get a great quality of sushi for the price and a server who is constantly refilling your water. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I move away from L.A.

This place should be the type of place that gets 5 stars from me. Larger portions, unassuming, tasty food. What could be better? The reality is that it’s a 2 ½ stars, but I feel too bad for them(they’re very nice, they try hard, and you have to give some credit for effort) to round down, so I rounded up. I love the notion that sushi is ½ price — but why not just lower the price? It has a distinctly K-mart-ish feel to it. If you’ve read my other reviews, you’ll figure I probably have no problem with K-mart food(do they even have food at K-mart?). You would be right, as long the place has no pretensions of being something far more impressive. This is «fancy-ish» with a K-mart feel, which I do not approve of. If your sushi is forever priced at half off, then you either have raised your prices and are giving us a come-on, or you have cheap sushi which isn’t that great. Or you have a great deal, in which case you don’t need to resort to such amateurish tricks to sell your product. The food is actually pretty tasty. I’ve only had the sushi and sushi appetizers, while some people I’ve dined with have had the other non-sushi, which looked appealing. Suffice it to say, on the sushi front, I really wanted the sushi to be better than it was. I kept telling myself«It’s half-priced, it’s cheap, don’t judge,» something I’m able to do quite well at Japanese markets like Mitsuwa or at AYCE places like Midori. I just couldn’t do it here. The sushi was small and not that great, and it could never compete with the exotic descriptions. Another thing, they’re huge fans of avocado here(which is probably how they justify the perpetual ½ off). When I see avocado served in every sushi dish, whether it’s in the description or not, whether it’s really justified by what you’re ordering or not(in spicy tuna? Come on already), I say«CHEAPFILLERCRAP!» really loud. Everything here seems to come with avocado. The appetizers have great titles and descriptions that evoke really nice, expensive and extremely tasty places like Sushi Roku. They never seem to live up to their descriptions. Perhaps if I came in here with lowered expectations, it would get 4 stars. But, it just looks too nice and disappoints too much to get better than 3 stars. Sorry Iron Grill, I want to give you more, but I just can’t. Dump the avocado, lower your prices and get rid of that obnoxious«½ price» banner out front, and you’ll move up a star or so, and get far more visits from me.

3.5 stars for this place. Service, as mentioned before, is not the greatest especially for such a small place. I came here with a bunch of friends because of the 50% off sushi. Amazingly the 50% sushi is off ANYTHING sushi related. There were 5 of us so we ended up getting the love boat for two and three other rolls. The rolls are on the thin side, but still tasty and good quality fish. The love boat(originally $ 49.99) at half price is an AWESOME deal. $ 25 for 10 pieces of nigiri, 10 pieces of sashimi, two rolls, and salad and miso. yum. Too bad the 50% off only lasts till the end of september, so better go quick!

Anytime I see Chinese and sushi on the same menu the skeptic switch is flicked, but considering I was sick and really just in need of some hot soup this place fit the bill. We decided to pop in for a quick lunch and I was immediately surprised by how appetizing the food on others tables looked. Nice presentation for cheapie Chinese lunch? Not too shabby. It’s obvious from the wall lined with four terminals for about a dozen tables they do lots of take out and delivery trade which made how cute it was inside even more surprising than it already was getting past the giant banner ad for half off sushi hanging out front. Lunch specials don’t include soup — they come with a lovely miso dressing tossed green salad and an egg roll — so I ordered my hot and sour soup along with an iced green tea on the side. The soup was perfect. Piping hot, just the right balance of spicy and sour with a great fragrance of pepper. Aside from the fact that after a few days without an appetite I was full before my double kung pao lunch special even arrived, it was just right. Couple bites of kung pao were tasty and they didn’t scrimp on the shrimp. The nibble I had of their lo mein wasn’t too shabby either. And the green tea was clearly brewed fresh and didn’t come out of can. Ice green tea bait and switch is a huge pet peeve of mine and they weren’t pulling any of those shenanigans here. If you live or work in the area, this one’s definitely worth adding to your lunch and delivery rotation.

Hot damn! I’m all about cheap food! This place was pretty good. I agree with the small portions and the hit or miss service, but you REALLY can’t beat the prices. Edamame, Vegetable roll, Red Dragon roll, Philadelphia Roll and the Spicy Crab Tempura roll. The edamame was a little undercooked, yet soggy. I think either cooked on too high a temperature for not long enough, or at a low temperature for way too long, not sure which. Either way, soggy shells are gross. The rolls were all pretty good, man. The best was the spicy tempura crab roll. Holy smokes! The sushi was all fresh and tasty. The best part, IMO, is that there is no corkage! Take advantage of the 50% off sushi rolls and zero corkage while it lasts. Also, note that there is a giant tree right in front of their sign, which is dumb. Regardless, I will definitely return. Cheap sushi rules!

Just as the pigeon’s brain was built to detect the earth’s magnetic field… mine was built to detect anything ½ off. This restaurant was a purely accidental(or rather… instinctive) find. We were scooting along on the moped when suddenly I looked to the left a notice the ½ off sushi sign. With the loss of Sushi Mura in Westwood… we did not hesistate to slam on the break and make an illegal u-turn to try and hopefully incorporate this place to the ever shortening list of cheap sushi places on the west side. Initial reaction of this place — Asian trendy restaurant catering to the non-Asian crowds. The whole eating area was not big at all. I’d say it was about the size of a living room in a 3-bedroom house in the South Bay area(as you can tell… I’ve been busy house-hunting). At most there were four 4-seaters and three 2-seaters. It did not have much for decoration either except for some bar/grill-ish looking object on one wall. After we were seated, I kindly asked the waiter what sushi rolls were actually half off and couldn’t control myself when he said all of them. The whole entire sushi roll menu was half off including the fancy ones!!! With no time to waste, we immediately ordered three rolls — spider roll, shrimp tempura, and red dragon(spicy tuna roll with tuna on top). I gotta say… it has been so long since I’d last seen sushi rolls with the nori on the outside. Personally… I think that’s more aesthetically looking than having the rice outside. Albeit the rolls were not that much(five or six slices per roll except the red dragon roll), they were freaking delicious. They went off the plates as fast as we ordered them so we had to order an extra shrimp tempura roll. The best part about this was that the bill came out to be 18 dollars. Honestly… if the sushi weren’t half off… I wouldn’t find it justified to pay the full amount. The sushi rolls were good but not 36-dollar good. The banner said half off price was only for dine-in customers and only for a limited time so foodies… you better come here fast before they end the promotion.

I’m somewhat surprised at the horrible service a lot of people have reviewed about. It could be because I usually dine in for lunch and do not get delivery but anyway… I work nearby and I have to say that this place is where I usually suggest when it’s time to eat. They serve a lot for their lunch specials considering the price. Yes it is NOT technically a Japanese restaurant in which they should be serving sushi, but their Chinese dishes are actually pretty decent. I always get a cup of the hot & sour soup which tastes pretty authentic and a spicy tuna roll. The roll isn’t the best I’ve had but I have had way worse where the tuna is not even red… weird? However, it hits the spot. There is not much to choose from in the area unless you want something expensive or not too tasty. The service is always pretty good when I’m there and every person that I’ve taken there loves the orange chicken(I’ve never tried it), the kung pao chicken(which was pretty tasty) and the Garlic Shrimp(also pretty good). *all lunch specials* Everything that I have tried has been pretty flavorful. Maybe you should just not order sushi and just order the Chinese Lunch Specials.

Yes, it’s nothing special but it’s really good for what you get. I have been here twice for half price sushi. I don’t think portions are that small. I actually find it tasty. Of course it’s not the best or most creative sushi in town but it’s pretty good for the value. Therefore, I don’t know why the reviews are so bad. I’m throwing in a positive one.

I wish we read this review before… I wished I Unilocaled before eating here… the menu was just so misleading… everyone was so right… The portion was TINY Service was bleh… and Thai ice tea was horrendous. The pictures on the menu are extremely misleading… we ordered egg rolls, red dragon rolls, rainbow roll and I swear they are probably ¼th size of any regular rolls elsewhere. I still can’t believe I tipped 22%… Misleading Japanese food serving chinese restaurant… I’m not going back for sure…

First, I would like to second Allie A. in her review, because this place really should be called iron grill, because honestly it is just a chinese restaurant slightly meshed with sushi… no need for a grill here, and definitely not an iron one! Unless this title is supposed to be mimicking«Iron Chef» on tv which of course is an asian show, then this place needs to apply to change its name…(I think I may have made this place look cooler than it is with the Iron Chef reference! darn it!!) My roommate Rupa S. and I wanted sushi but were feeling bold and decided to just walk up pico and see what we would find. We saw Iron Grill and recognized it from all of the numerous menus they leave at our apartment building nearby, and I can see why they promote delivery so much, because the inside of this place is smaller than our living room! DONOTBRING A GROUPHEREUNLESSYOUWANTTORENTOUTTHEWHOLEPLACE! YOUWON’T FIT! Enough of that. On to the food. All I have to say is does this place own a spice rack? This was probably some of the blandest chinese and suhi I have EVER had. We ordered the egg rolls to start and they were just grease filled rolls with nothing good inside at all. My roommate who orders egg rolls all the time even said she would never order them again. We also got the crab wontons which were probably the only decent part of the meal, but were still not anything amazing. Sushi wise we got the spicy yellowtail roll and the shrimp tempura roll… in a nut shell the sushi did not taste fresh. That should be all you need to know, but I guess this is maybe why our sushi rolls were ½ off on our bill? Yes we randomly ended up here during a happy hour I guess, but I wish I had gotten some alcohol to make me happier! I was just happy I didn’t pay full price! So much for being bold and adventurous and trying to try a new place…

First off, I’d like to suggest that they change the name of this place. Until I saw tables donned with soy sauce, I thought it was a panini restaurant. Iron Grill? Aren’t you picturing a giant panini grill in the back? Ok, well maybe that’s just me. On to my review: I like my sushi at Japanese restaurants, and my Chinese food at a Chinese restaurant, so I usually shy away from mixed asian types of places. But, when the boss lady wants to try something, you try it. I was surprised that I actually liked it. We started off with a spicy tuna roll(I’ve had better, but I have definitely had worse), then we each ordered one of the lunch specials. Salad, egg roll, rice and an entrée for $ 9?! Sign me up. I had the walnut shrimp, it was pretty good, although had I known it would be lightly fried, I probably wouldn’t have ordered it. It was clean, fast, and tasty. Probably not a place I’d crave, but I wouldn’t object to going again.

Had to go there by default at 2:55pm when all other sushi spots were closed. We didn’t end up ordering much sushi. I was very surprised at how nice all the staff was and how good the food was! The orange chicken was an A+. I have had better honey glazed walnut prawns but these were still good. Also, the spicy tuna roll with avocado & tobasco was yummy! Lunch specials are a good value and they came with a salad. I ordered some stuff for take out a few days later but it was not as good as when it is fresh. I would go dine there again.

I ordered the Orange Chicken and it was great… best I’ve had. They use real pieces of chicken… not those perfectly formed balls. The sushi was good too. I can’t say much for the rest of the menu but I’ll be ordering again. I must say though, the service was a bit sketchy. I didn’t get anything to drink until my meal came out, they refilled my Sprite with water which was a tasty surprise, and it took about 15 minutes to get my check.

We had tickets to see Gonzo across the street at the Landmark but needed to fill up the«tank» with some nourishment. A lot of spots were closed due to the 4th of July holiday, so Iron Grill was the default choice, since we were craving sushi. The place is very nice and cozy but would not want to be here when it gets packed. They have less than 10 tables and the whole place probably seats no more than 14 – 15 people at any given time. Here’s the major downer. It’s a sushi/chinese place. Half of the menu is sushi, and the other half is chinese. I hate that shit. I ordered their sushi special but forgot what cuts I received. You can only order from the menu as they don’t have an «off the menu» or «a la carte» selection, I wanted some octopus but they didn’t have it. We also split a Philidelphia roll which wasn’t great and a spicy tuna roll which was cool but not as spicy as one would think. There’s nothing spectacular about the food but it will kill the hunger if you arrive with an appetite.

The extent of my experience with the restaurant is as follows. *Calling the restaurant* Employee: Hello. Me: Hi, I’d like to order food; how far do you deliver? Employee: *unclear speech* Me: Excuse me? Employee: What is you phone number? Me: Uh, ok. it’s 424. Employee: What is your PHONE number? Me: I was about to tell you. It’s 424… Employee: *unclear speech not in English* PHONE. Me: Ok, it’s 424. Employee: hold on I get manager to help you. Me: uh, ok. *intermittent background noise* Employee 2: Hi. Me: Uh, hi. *click* And thus, no one should attempt to order from them unless you have some type of translator handy. I recommend finding another of the hundreds of Chinese food restaurants in LA.

I’m honestly surprised that other ppl had such a pleasant experience. We decided to order delivery, because we were too tired to go anywhere. The entire bill was quite expensive for what we ordered– they didn’t give us very much food. We ordered one order of jasmine white rice, one order of brown rice, one hot and sour soup, one wonton soup, and one order of honey walnut shrimp. For $ 30. The rice wasn’t a lot, but it was good and a reasonable price. The hot and sour soup was very thick and a little bit above average in taste for the Chinese food in the area. The wonton soup was… well– let’s just say it’s still a full container. The honey walnut shrimp was nasty– granted it doesn’t deliver well, but still pretty nasty. I wouldn’t be back, there are much more yummier and cheaper places.
