John’s Music Center

We were in need of a full size cello. John’s Music Center offered many choices and price ranges, and was very patient as my daughter carefully selected and played different instruments. We were really pleased that they worked with us financially, offering a terrific deal that matched out budget. They also knew their business very well, as they understood the intricacies of each instrument. Highly recommended!

I recently purchased a 20 watts practice amp at great deal. Johns Music will match the price available online.
I came home and didn’t quite like the sound that was produced by Fender Mustang 2. So I took it back and without any trouble, I was able to exchange to Roland cube 20gx that was available. I must say Johns Music does offer the top notch service and very reasonable price. I am no longer driving all the way to guitar center.

If they have the right string instrument for your needs, this store is a great bargain. it helps to be familiar with string instruments.
Luckily for my friend, John placed an ad on craigslist, otherwise we never would have come here. We don’t live nearby, and it was just not on our radar screen.
I am a cellist. My friend emailed me that her 9 year old son chose cello when school started last week. I immediately went online and saw that rental cellos (everywhere) are $ 45−50/month. This seems like a lot of money; $ 400+ for a school year, plus nothing to show for it at the end of the year. Many online forums say to rent because you don’t know if your child will stick with the instrument, but if you know what you are doing and you buy a good used instrument at a good price, you can always re-​sell it for the same price.
Luckily for us, John had many ½ size cellos, and he marked them down to sell quickly. I saw his ad on craigslist, 3 cellos, ½ size. I came with my friend and we determined that the middle priced one, $ 299, was a good cello and she purchased it, along with a tuner, stand, and rosin. A cello of that quality would have cost closer to, or slightly over, $ 1,000 at a fine string shop. Yes, there would be a higher level of service, and more care and maintenance of the instrument at a fine string shop, so you need to ask yourself, what is that worth to you? $ 700?
Even the $ 199 cello sounded good, however it was not cosmetically as desirable (would have been difficult to resell on craigslist if my friend ever wanted to do that) and ultimately it was not chosen because the endpin was extremely difficult to slide in and out; the boy could not do it and neither could I. At a fine string shop, the endpin holder and endpin would have been replaced. So that is the type of issue one may encounter here; they are not luthiers, but they do deal with a lot of students and student instruments and they know their stuff in that arena.
Instruments and lessons become expensive over the years, so you want to be smart about your expenditures. A brand new cello online or from craigslist at $ 200 would be far inferior to what we saw at John’s. You want pegs that stay in tune, fine tuners on the tailpiece that work well, and a resonant, cello-​y sound, not the hollow, dull sound of a plywood cello that also does not hold a tune due to poor-​fitting, slipping pegs. Those are completely worthless, so please avoid.
John will credit ½ the purchase price of the cello (which came with bow (not new) and bag (also not new)) toward a larger size or move-​up cello. So my friend’s son will probably use this cello for two years and then trade up to a ¾, at a cost of $ 150 (half of $ 299) for two years. That is $ 6.25/month, versus $ 50/​month rental. $ 299 versus $ 1,200 for two years, AND you own the cello!

great place to look for all your musical needs. the owner John is awesome and hooked me up with a great deal on a Fender acoustic and guitar accesories. you wouldn’t think this place exists from outside but when you go inside it is so clean and well kept! John is there for his customers and is very knowledgeable about all the instruments. and lastly, you cannot beat the prices of some the amazing instruments inside. this place is definitely worth shopping at

Confession: I am the worst guitar player on the planet. Confession #2: I don’t care, I play anyway. Luckily for me, I’m learning how to be less offensive to eardrums by taking lessons here at John’s Music Center.
This is a robust music store that offers a wide variety of instrument sales, rentals and repairs, accessories, books, etc. in addition to instruction. Lessons are offered for different instruments to students of all ages, with John teaching some lessons himself. I take both group and private guitar lessons here, focusing on popular music and classical guitar, respectively.
As another Unilocaler has noted, John studied at USC. This pains me to no end, being the Bruin that I am, but I still take lessons from him — and that’s a testament if there ever was one! :D
Their prices are very reasonable, and most importantly, you get sound advice from people who really know what they’re talking about. Buying a musical instrument and/​or committing to lessons is a significant investment. It’s reassuring to have this reliable source who will steer you in the right direction so you know you’re investing wisely.

I LOVE this place! Me and my family have been coming here for years, buying instruments that range from violins to clarinets and now guitars, and we have never been disappointed!!! John is seriously so great and very knowledgable about what he sells! I wouldn’t buy my instruments anywhere else!

Needed to get my guitar re-​strung some place locally. Really glad to have found this place — — service was great, friendly, and quick — drop off and done in 30 minutes. Owner is a USC music grad — really dedicated about helping music students get the best. Store set-​up is cozy, loaded with stuff at reasonable prices, promises you’ll find everything you need. Fun to browse. Picked up a guitar strap and they slapped a discount on it. Group guitar lessons on Tuesdays even. Just a great store overall !
