Great Mexican bread, I’ve been coming here for the past 35+ years. One thing that bothered me-I was not aware that you are charge for bags and boxes, the boxes for the bread is «TWODOLLARS, $ 2.00, DID I MENTIONEDTHEYCHARGEYOUTWODOLLARS($ 2.00) FORTHEBOX!!!», so when you get your bread, make sure they do not put the bread in a box!!!

La Mascota bakery has had a beautiful face lift! The food is reasonably priced and delicious! My family and I had the pleasure of speaking with the new owner, Frank, and thanked him for not changing any of the recipes. My breakfast chorizo and potato torta was amazing and since my husband and daughter have remained speachless after the Lomo asadao tortas, I must say they were a hit! Once again, thank you Frank for keeping La Mascota a part of a family tradition. Fight on!!!

Love this bakery! They have a big selection of baked goods(Best conchas I’ve ever tried). The toratas are bomb. I’ve never tried the tamales but I hear they are amazing. The staff is really friendly and they have great customer service. Except the Batista who could do without the stank face and he always gives my husband hot drinks when he asks for iced(so be very clear about that). Their coffee and drinks are really great. There is always a bit of a line but staff work quickly so its not that long of a wait. Overall outstanding bakery. Highly recommended.

I grew up walking distance from La Mascota Bakery, my aunt still lives there in the neighborhood. I saw all the bad reviews mostly around December 2015, early January 2016. I’m assuming it was because of new owners still going through the process of running the place. Everything still delicious, the tamales are still the best in town. The new owners are doing a great job and I’m so glad they bought La Mascota. It would had been sad to see it closed. So all of you that had a bad experience, give it another try.

The new owners did a great job with the decoration. Now, la mascota looks clean and spacious to sit and enjoy yourself. The owner told us that they kept the same recipe and the same cooks/staff. They implemented new dishes to their menu. The times I’ve been there since they reopened they are trying out some new salsas. The tamales are almost exactly the same as they were before. The tamal has a generous amount of dough and meat. Personally I’d like more chili on my tamal. Therefore, I ask for extra salsa on the side. The bakery is awesome. They have a great variety of pan dulce. The pan dulces are not dry and hard. They taste very fresh. They offer breads, cookies and cakes. Overall, I really like the change to La Mascota.

I’ve lived in LA all my life and never came across this place until now and al thanks to my aunt. We went for breakfast, around 11ish on Wednesday 4⁄13. There was a few people when we arrived and a handful of people in line. Within a few minutes the line started to get longer and longer. So, if your planning to come and eat or even order food or bread be prepared to be in line for atlas 15 minutes or more. The space is small and it does get crowded so save is limited for walking, and when the line gets as long as it was when we were there its a bit hard to walk around. I had to stand up to let a person come through because they were in a wheelchair and there was no space for him to move around freely. Of course, i did not mind but I think some extra space would be ideal. There was only 5 people behind the counter, 3 guys and 2 women. The cooks were only cooking and serving the guests that were eating in which i think was a bit weird but it helped. The rest were taking orders and payments. Even though there was a long line they expedited very well and the line was moving fairly quickly. They did a great job. The café de la Hoya was very good and so was the food. Tasty and delicious. If you haven’t been i recommend you go and try it out.

I love the new look of La Mascota! It is so bright & welcoming! The owners greet you warmly and tend to your every need! I got to sample a mini éclair & a taste of the tres leches cake! Too die for! I also ordered the chile verde plate which was so delicious & tasted like it came out of their grandma’s kitchen! Homemade & so tasty! I also took home some pork tamales and chile & cheese tamales. OMG! The masa was fluffy and yummy! The filling was generous! This is where I’m getting my tamales from now on! Thank you Ileana, Olivia, Patty & Frank!

Oh La Mascota, just uttering your name fills me with so much nostalgia for my childhood! This place has changed so much throughout the years but the charm, quality, and deliciousness has remained the same! Notably, this bakery has many delicious Mexican breads that aren’t as easy to come by at other bakeries such as cuellos and chilindrinas. TRYTHECHILINDRINAS!!! They are basically a concha on steroids with an extra crunchy top and scrumptious sugary morsels! So delicious and pretty hard to find anywhere else! Other favorites– Mint agave latte– DELICIOUS! Slightly chocolaty, with a hint of fresh mint and beautiful steamed milk art Torta de tamal– basically one of the AMAZING tamales inside a freshly baked birrote Champurrado– great paired with ^

This place is so wonderful. Their customer service is excellent and their food is absolutely incredible. The torta cubana and torta de pollo is so delicious! Of course their pastries and bolillos are just as good and do not leave without trying their café de olla!

My coworkers have been raving about la Mascota and teasing me with their delights since the change of ownership a few months ago. All I’ve heard I how upgraded the place is now and then the Unilocal reviews of how this place has changed forever. My coworkers were right. It seems the angry Unilocal reviews are folks caught up with the old owners or like any place else, had a one-off bad experience. That aside, I got some cookies and a mint agave latte. Everything was fresh, delicious, amazing! Will be back for tortas. One of the employees caught me ogling at the goodies on the counter and asked if I wanted to sample, which was an offer I couldn’t refuse. Staff was friendly, customers were happy and experience was more than pleasant. Safe to say I left happy. Barriga llena, corazon contenta. Full belly, happy heart.

I’ve been coming to La Mascota for years now, and the pan dulce here has been consistently great. The weekend doesn’t start for us until we’ve sat down with some conchas and coffee on Saturday morning. So my wife and I were a little concerned when the joint was recently purchased by new owners. Concerned that the staff would change, concerned that the food would change. Those concerns were for nothing. Over the last several months, our conchas and bollios haven’t changed in the slightest — they remain the very best you can get in Boyle Heights. And the same faces I’ve seen baking and working the counter since we moved into the neighborhood are still there. The things that have always made La Mascota great are unchanged. What the new owners have done is added more. More people from the neighborhood working here. More places to comfortable sit and enjoy a coffee and some tamales. More types of bread, and now tortas and made-to-order huevos con just about anything you’d want to throw into some eggs. This place has been a jewel this community for longer than I’ve lived here and it was hard to imagine things getting better. But they have. The place looks really fantastic; it’s become someplace that you’d want to stay and eat with friends and family, rather than a place to grab your tamales and go. And again, the food is top-notch. Thanks La Mascota!

What I enjoy most of all are the tasty cakes they make. My three favorites are 3 leches, cappuccino and white chocolate, all three are a bomb. The delicious sandwiches and tamales is what I eat first, than a slice of desert. I wash it all down with a café con leche. YES

Stopped by to show the place to some friends from San Francisco, I’d heard that there where some changes from the owners that had the place for 65 years sold the place. I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in, cleaned up, tables and chairs, same crew. Met the owner Frank, he was very professional. He shared with us the new cake that its exclusive mto them. it’s a five layer cake, cheesecake, flan, chocolate, tres leches, and i think peanut butter. it was out of this world. their mexican pan dulce was pretty good, they need a little more quality control. so, when you get some check what they are giving you. I got some burned«orejas» that she got from the back of the tray. but otherwise I think the have a good future. I didn’t taste the tamales, another couple were sitting enjoying them and they seemed happy, I will post a picture of the cake.

Excellent food. Bought tamales today of chicken and cheese. Super moist and plenty of chunks of chicken inside. Pan dulce is always fresh and they always have a variety, didnt take a photo of the bread while I was there, sorry. The only bad thing is the parking, you have to literally drive in circles to find one. This is my only go to spot for tamales and sweet bread.

I’ve been coming to La Mascota for over 25 years. I admit that around the holidays last month, I was disappointed that 2 times out of 3, they ran out of tamales; and on top of that, they weren’t going to have any available later in the day(and it was only 11:00am!). THAT’S NEVERHAPPENEDBEFORE!!! Before, they’ve always made tamales around the clock and made them available at least within a few hours, ESPECIALLYAROUNDTHEHOLIDAYS!!! I also noticed that from one Sunday to the next, the place looked different inside, and I found out that there were new owners. That had me worried. I started to read all the BAD Unilocal reviews posted during the holidays and thought it was sad that my «go to» place for tamales has gone downhill. So, I decided to go back today. I called ahead of time, and SOMEONEANSWEREDTHEPHONE and confirmed that they had tamales available. The person that answered the phone asked how many tamales I wanted, I told her 2 dozen(8 cheese, 8 chicken, 8 cheese), she took my name down and asked when I would be there. I told her 20 – 30 minutes and she said OK. So off to La Mascota I went! I got there, the place looked even more different inside than the last time I was there. New paint job, there were a bunch of tables and chairs, the workers were wearing black uniforms(maybe they were wearing them last time, I just didn’t notice), and they have a barista. The service was fast and friendly, and I got my tamales and some other sweets. The guy that was behind me in line walked in and wanted to buy 5 dozen tamales… they came back with about 3 ½ dozen and said they ran out, but THEYWOULDHAVEMOREAVAILABLE in about an hour(it was 12:30pm)! Wow, maybe the new owners learned from their mistakes made during the holidays. The tamales were still GOOD! I didn’t notice a difference in taste or quality(per Unilocalers reviews). The other bread and sweets I bought were good too(I know which ones to buy… as in any place, the items behind the cases are hit or miss). It’s hard to undo a bad experience at any establishment, but I’m glad I gave La Mascota another chance today. Hopefully, I won’t have to retract and update my review when I go back next, or go during a major holiday.

This bakery offers a variety of items like sweet Mexican bread, flower jello and tamales. They have their own private parking lot which is very convenient. Service in the morning seems to be pretty fast(per my second visit). Tamales — chicken and cheese kind, both were meh! or maybe I simply got some from the wrong batch. I will still give it another try though! Flower jello is pretty for looks, but flavor is pretty bland. I am sure I will take it up to 5 stars on my next visit. :)

TAMALES! Hells yeah! Luv the tamales at this spot! My mom seriously had me call at 5 am and tell peeps to hold a dozen of tamales de dulce for us. They open at 5 am, I said mom there will be some left, but mom is like we can’t take any chances Lol! In all fairness u should come early to get the flavor you want or else… This place is our go to place for pan dulce, bolillos, tamales, gelatinas, and flan since we were kids. They sell cakes here for all occasions as well, but we have another spot for that. The pan dulce is legit, always on point. The prices are so fair, and there’s so many options. U can dunk any of these breads in your café con leche and chew with a smile. =)
