Description

Specialties

Marat Daukayev Ballet Theatre’s mission is to create and sustain a world-class center for ballet performance and training in Los Angeles.

Ticket sales pay for only a fraction of the expense of live ballet production. Our generous patrons make it possible for us to bring a professional-quality NUTCRACKER, featuring international guest stars, to over 8000 spectators each holiday season.

Through its official school, the Marat Daukayev School of Ballet, the Theatre offers a rigorous and highly technical program of study in the classical Russian style, unique in Los Angeles. Students who could not otherwise afford such an education are supported by the generosity of patrons like you.

Marat Daukayev Ballet Theatre is a 501©3 not-for-profit California public benefit corporation.

History

Established in 2001.

In little over a decade, Marat Daukayev Ballet’s NUTCRACKER has gone from homegrown production to professional-quality spectacle. The first NUTCRACKER, in 2001, was mounted at Hamilton High School, with 50 students performing only Act I, a set cobbled together with pieces borrowed from Sony Studios, and a group of girls on loan from Palos Verdes dancing the Waltz of the Flowers. Today, the School has its own lavish set and costumes hand-sewn in Russia and Japan and will perform for over 8,000 people at The Luckman Theatre at Cal State LA — one of the best dance venues in the city.

Performances run December 7 — 15, 2013. In two gala performances, students of «LA’s Best Children’s Ballet School 2011» will be joined by international stars Maria Kochetkova and Joaquin de Luz.

Meet the Business Owner

Marat and Pamela D.

Business Owner

Marat Daukayev received his professional training at the Vaganova and Perm Ballet Schools in Russia. During his 20-year career with the Kirov Ballet, he danced the leading male roles in the complete repertoire of classic ballets. St. Petersburg audiences adored him for the purity of his technique and dramatic expression. In 1972 he won the Bronze medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna. In 1977 he received the Russian State Award for artistic achievement, and in 1983, he was named People’s Artist — the highest honor bestowed by the Russian State.

After retiring from performance, Mr, Daukayev was teacher and coach to principal dancers of the Kirov Ballet and helped shape the next generation of stars. He and his wife Pamela created Marat Daukayev Ballet Theatre and its official school, Marat Daukayev School of Ballet, in 2001. They live in Windsor Square with their three children.
