We didn’t know of a person who specialized in mastering music so of course, I began to read reviews. And EVERY review was so complimentary, I figured he wrote them himself. But then I got on the phone with him, and I knew it was all true.
Mike is not only amazing at his craft, but an all around great guy. I felt like I was dealing with a friend… not a business associate.
He gave us a great price… and even when he ran into many glitches… he was still more than fair in the amount he had to upcharge us.
Mike responds almost immediately to phone calls and emailsand we trust him completely.

It doesn’t take a seasoned professional (which I am not) to know when another person is just plain easy and awesome to work with. He’s NICE, incredibly informed (like, really) and has YOUR best interests in mind. Say no more. Well, I’m going to say a little more…
I had just finished my first album after years of songwriting and mixing in various formats. I had old stuff from a friend, new stuff from current recordings, and old recordings on a Tascam 8-​track… I had no idea what could and couldn’t be done, but I wanted them to sound professional and cohesive.
Not only did I love the actual job (he made the songs sound cohesive and professional! I’m sure it was easier for him but to me it was magic)… I really appreciated his willinginess to help me in this entirely new process and to give me all kinds of technical/​music related information. He felt like a cool, techy friend who I could just banter with to help me make sense of everything. I ALWAYS felt comfortable asking questions. Even my favorite one: «wait… so what’s mastering, again? uhhh?» Not an ounce of snobbery coming from Mike. He clearly cares about what he does.
He has a great set-​up designed for you to get the best results for your tracks and to feel totally comfortable with the end result. He took time to take my input and my changes easy-​breezy and quicly, which was so great, because I tend to worry that I’m bothering people. He clearly is a busy guy, but he STAYED IN COMMUNICATION with me which I think is super important. Don’t you? Yes. Let’s all go to Mike Wells. I felt taken care of musically, and respected as a human being.
Also, how fun is it to sit in a room and see someone twisting nobs like the Wizard of Oz and making your music come out sounding all luscious and radio-​ready?! Again, we’re talking music that was recorded in an apartment on basic equipment. He helped me feel confident of and proud of my music.
And, as far as I can, given I haven’t gone to anyone else… He has damn good, reasonable rates that include a wonderfully organized, incredibly helpful package of IRSC codes and meta data and all the confusingn shiz that I had to ask him about 10 times.

No questions asked — call Mike right now. Read no more reviews. Nicest guy in the world, can handle any type of track, will work only with specific client needs, and is financially flexible. ¹¹⁄₁₀

I worked with Mike for the very first time this summer on what is my fourth release. I’ve worked with several other mastering engineers in the past, but felt that I wanted a different take on my material this time around. After interviewing several highly accomplished and well known engineers it was my decision to go to Mike to master my new record, and I simply could not be happier with the results or the process that got them for us.
It was immediately apparent when I first spoke to Mike that he was a master of his craft and knowledgeable to the point of overkill (think nuclear weapon to cook an egg). Mike was extremely generous with his time in both our initial conversations and in the groundworks session, which in concept alone is an awesome idea.
When it comes down to it though, there are two principal points that make me want to recommend Mike so highly:
1. Mike listens, and listens carefully to you when you speak. All of our conversations let me talk about my music in whatever capacity I wanted to; technically, or about the colors and feelings I wanted it to emote. He asked questions that were right on the money, and often anticipated other points I had wanted to make. This not only helps Mike get the masters right the first time, but from my side of things, this helps keep costs down. As a solo singer/​songwriter who is not signed, this is truly fantastic. It means that I could get a master that would sonically be far beyond the price point I would be billed for.
2. After talking, listening and clearing up any thoughts about the project, Mike delivered masters that were well beyond my expectations. The final project was both bigger and more intimate than I thought could be done. The openness and space, which was a priority, remained while the mixes popped out of the speakers. People sometimes say that mastering is a dark art, and that would appear to be the case here. I’m an engineer myself, but I would be hard pressed to reverse engineer how Mike was able to make the music shine the way that it now does.
Mike makes the finishing process, in what can sometimes be a time consuming and thankless endeavour, truly fun and exciting. He brings a level of expertise that unsigned artists such as myself generally can’t afford. In a few words, Mike makes it right. I feel comfortable recommending him without qualification.

All you need is Mike!
I’ve worked with many different mastering people and like anyone looking for the best, I would try new people just to see what’s out there. When I received our first mastered single back from Mike, I knew I would never experiment or go with anyone else ever again! Once you’ve found Michael Jordan, you don’t keep trying out new new people for your basketball team ;)
We had our latest album mastered by Mike and every step of the way was swift, professional, and pleasant. To have such stellar quality «and» such a cool guy with professionalism is just such a nice thing to have.
We received our album and couldn’t help thinking «How does he have access to the balls track and turn it up like that?» THIS GUY COULD UN-​NEUTER A DOG!

Many of Mike’s customers have come to my company (Wette Music) and his masters are consistently excellent and well packaged with all appropriate documentation. Not only that, but when I ask what it was like working with Mike, the positives are unanimous: professional, serious work habits, good attitude, timely work. Long story short: We had a harrowing experience with recording and mixing our record because we cut corners and called in favors to keep our costs down… it didn’t go smoothly. I don’t know a whole lot about recording or engineering, but let that be telling: Despite my limited knowledge, I walked away from our experience with Mike having learned a ton, not just about «what mastering is», but of the entire process of making and pressing a record. Aside from the the whole mastering thing, Mike is also savvy when it comes to manufacturers, and knows what bases to cover to make process of getting your final product pressed as painless as possible, and… get this… he’s probably the nicest dude ever. Like, ever. No ego, no attitude– We had a great time. Taking our record to Mike was totally worth every penny and every minute!
This was the most pleasant part of our entire record-​making process, and our album (finally) sounds crystal-​clear and amazing. I will 100% turn to this dude for all future endeavors.

I agree with everyone else who’s reviewed Mike. He is the shizzle when it comes to mastering. In this day and age you can get mastering done for zero to infinity dollars, which can make it difficult to decide where to go.
Mike is infinitely good value for money, because a) he’s extremely talented, b) he’s invested in the right tools for the job, and c) he’s a great guy who will go the extra mile to make this the best possible experience for you.
Also, there’s all that confusion over what mastering actually *is*. I’ve gone to the websites of other mastering companies and listened to their ‘before’ and ‘after’ samples and been just as confused as before. When Mike worked his magic on my songs though, it was incredibly obvious that they sounded better post-​mastering.

Mike has mastered the last 3 albums I recorded and I couldn’t be happier. He doesn’t try to make your mixes sound different, he makes them sound better… way better. He will really listen to you when you explain what you’re going after, not like other engineers I’ve worked with where they’re just punching a time card. The mixes have more life, more depth, and sound just as great on my crap computer speakers as they do on my somewhat decent stereo.

Mike mastered my band’s demo, and made it sound great! He knows what he is doing, and his prices are really reasonable. The groundwork session is a good way of getting to know each other, and making sure there will be no snags in the mastering process. Mike definitely goes the extra mile — like taking care of your metadata and getting ISRC codes so your songs can go up on iTunes. The other cool thing about Mike is he (unlike a lot of other mastering engineers) is interested in knowing what the artist’s goal is as far as the ultimate sound, so he will ask for your input, while giving you the benefit of his expertise. He’s got a great comfortable studio in the old Hyde Street Studios Building.
