Out of the Closet Thrift Store

Clothing selection is super disappointing ! Everything I had I intrest in was unwearable. Holes, stains and falling apart. I have some some great furniture pieces. pricing is meh as well some pieces are fair some over priced. I come here to find things to make pots out of mostly.

I hate to write this because I have always been an avid supporter and frequent donor of OOTC but I called to set up a furniture donation, a complete 5 piece walnut antique bedroom set. I spoke with James and he scheduled my pick up for a Wednesday although he couldn’t give a time window for pick up he said «the driver will call you 15 min before they pick up». How considerate! James seemed annoyed and rather unpleasant on the phone, so maybe the job is not ideal for him.
The pick up day came and went, I waited home all day and no call and no pick up. I called and left a msg for James to find out what happened and to reschedule the pick up. Left 2 messages and nothing!
Is OOTC so busy they just don’t need donations anymore? How sad!
I decided instead to call Habitat for Humanity and they were very eager for my 5 Piece bedroom set donation and even gave me a pick up window of 4 hours. Now that is how you run a charity!

Im practically here every week or so! No joke seriously since I have my drum lessons up the street I always come a little bit earlier just to look around and shop!
Friendly staff very organized reasonable prices!
And I’m always finding something new to take home I enjoy coming here :)

You can find some cool nick nacks and furniture here but if you’re looking for clothes and are thick girl or a XL and up man don’t bother. Selection is S-​M at best with a few items in L and absolutely nothing in XL and up.

The new price-​tagger must have lost his or her mind! The prices were doubled on low quality products! (They were NOT antiques) the same rolling storage cart I bought a few weeks ago for 13 was $ 30!!! A beat up chest (it looked cool. I might have paid 30) was $ 50!!! Wtf. I might come back in hoped that they come to their senses…

So, today was my first visit to this OTC location. It was a little tricky getting there but I was glad I did. I went in and was pleasantly surprised by the selection of books they have available, that was my main reason for going there. As I walked through the store I came upon an iron, which I thought looked pretty good and I needed one so I picked it up. Everything was great until I got to the register. As I waited to be rung up I had plenty of time to read all the signs behind the register «everything sold as is» «no returns or exchanges» so on and so forth. This is all fine except I would hope that they would at least test their electronic items to make sure they work before putting them for sale out on the floor. I say this because after getting home and cleaning the iron the thing didn’t work! And since I had plenty of time to read the signs I know I can’t get my money back! Really frustrating to say the least. Bad business practice in my opinion. I also want to say that the girl behind the counter wasn’t very pleasant. So I can’t say that I will not be going back any time soon. Now I will go throw my new purchase in the trash.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Thrift Shop song caught on for good reason. It’s as catchy as a silver lure to a fish, and it describes the side of capitalism that is often dwarfed by Chinese imports: repurposing. You can’t repurpose stuff that was made for one time use, and that’s most of what’s in stores. So fine, this giant economic machine feeds on petroleum jelly, but you can find another way. You can ride a bike, you can stain a desk, you can sand a chest, you can do whatever comes to you.
Out of the Closet is part of that piece of résistance that carries word of what to do inside the inner tube. A tip of the hat and a smile to the tired soldiers of consumerism as the clandestine pirate passes by, full of knowledge. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the eternal triage of your junk and how it serves both you and others. Getting rid of what you haven’t used in 6 months, systematically, and giving it to a place that gives their proceeds to AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s worldwide treatment and care programs, and on top of that furnishes the explorers with treasures they should find. It’s a messy, messy oracle, but if you play it cool, you can come out clean. Look for one of the ten Southern California locations nearest you. They also pick up if needs be. I went to this OTC about a week ago to make some donations (about 5 bags of clothes toys, shoes and books). I usually go to the goodwill to give my donations when I do my spring cleaning, but OTC was closer to my home and in the direction of where I was headed that morning. I arrived to the store and pulled up in the back and took a couple of bags off the car and carried them into the store, there was one gentleman there I politely said «hello» to him and he never once looked up to acknowledge that I was there, so I went back to my car got the rest of the bags off and took them in. No body every greeted me or came out to help me, oh and btw I am 5 months pregnant. When I took the final bag in again I spoke to the gentleman and asked if I could just leave the bags there, once again he just went about his work and never answered. This is very rude especially when you are a store that runs on the donations of people like myself. If people didnt choose to go and donate to your store then those people wouldn’t have a place to work. I will never again make any kind of donation to this company I would rather drive a little out of my way to Goodwill and give my donations there. At Goodwill the workers are polite and run to the cars to help you unload and they actually say «Thank you». So I am very sorry Out of the closet you lost a customer. You should take a few pointers from Goodwill.

Spent $ 100 on a couch and was told after the purchase was made that I had 24 hours to get it out of the store. I had to beg and plead to have it stay for 2 more days. My fault — I didn’t measure the couch and it was too big to fit through our door., but they wouldn’t refund or give me a store credit. I call that stealing. It will be a cold day in hell when I shop at this place. Really cold.

Emailed them for pick up. I uploaded pictures of my items, etc. The window time was 8 – 4. Yes, 8 – 4! Luckily I called that morning and they narrowed it from 12 – 2. There were 2 men, 2 of them were fine, one of them had a bit of an attitude. They scrutinized all of the stuff and because there was «wear and tear» rejected most of it. They even rejected a 7 drawer chest, in good condition, because a knob was missing. Really? one knob. It was as if they thought I was a department store and they expected brand new furniture.
They even rejected a great mirrored chest because one of the panels was cracked, which is an easy fix for the next person. They said it was dangerous for the kids who go to their store. Of all the things that are «dangerous» in a thrift store, the cracked mirror? Cant you stick tape on it and move along?
hmm…I beginning to think the head guy was not feeling like picking up heavy items that day.

One of my fave thrift stores that has a $ 1.00 rack which you can find great deals on that rack!

Recent purchases: laundry by Shelly segal dress, as if new, Talbots spotless silk blouse, leather skirt, cool French black wool blazer, 3 t shirts in excellent condition, $ 37 total. I got cheap and didn’t buy the Vince Camuto dress w tags still on for $ 25.
I have to add, the dressing room needs to some place to hang the clothes! Also, the mirror is borderline funhouse.
But I still love this store.

Out of the Closet Thrift Stores are similar in the quality of merchandise you can find. I think this place has better prices than most OTC stores. Also most times the manager will lower the price if you just ask them for a break. I recently bought a rowing machine that was in mint condition and under a year old for ¹⁄₁₀ of the price it was listed for on Amazon. Sure some things are over priced but sometimes you just have to ask for a better price. As with any thrift store the more you check in the more likely you are to find that gem.

This place is OKAAAAY. Some of the items such as clothes, could be cheaper. Especially women’s clothing.

I wish I could give this place zero stars. I have been donating and purchasing from OOTC for years now and today was the worst customer service experience I have ever had. I bought a shoe cabinet from them for $ 36 and later on that same day saw the same thing, brand new at ikea for $ 25…so needless to say the pricing for their used merchandise leaves much to be desired. When I called them to ask about it, see if it was a mistake or something the woman told me I needed to hold to speak to a manager, ten minutes later a woman comes on the line and before I say anything says, «All sales as is.» I explained to her the issue and thought there must have just been a pricing mistake and she said, «Nooooo it’s like the grocery, just because another store has a better price doesn’t mean you can get it for that price here». This made no sense whatsoever seeing as grocery stores correct their mistakes and allow for returns, and then she said, «No! Company Policy. No. As Is.» and HUNG UP THE PHONE! This place is terrible, please save your time and money and go anywhere else!

Very good service, organized and not as crowded as other places. Prices here, in my opinion are fair when it comes to books, and some clothing items such as shirts and t-​shirts. Women’s clothes on the other hand is pricier. Overall, an organized friendly store.

Records: Probably the largest single collection I’ve ever seen at a thrift store: about 1000 vinyls in «flipping» bins (the same large fixture as at other OOTC locations, eg Fairfax and Glendale Blvd.) and as many again (or more) in a shelf system nearby.
That said, precious little of interest on the Wednesday morning I went. Came away with a pristine Tangerine Dream Firestarter soundtrack with great photo of Drew on the sleeve.
I will say that they had an unusually large selection of laserdiscs, if that’s your thing. A number of Bonds and a Criterion Arsenic and Old Lace; the latter was $ 4. Not sure if they charge you the LP price, the marked price, or the «video» price ($ 3).
There is some customer parking in the rear, though the spaces are mostly taken by OOTC trucks.

If you want to find big items, such as furniture, and nicer quality kitchenware and a great selection of books, this is the place to go! It’s a thrift store, it’s not supposed to look like a Macy’s department store. The times I’ve been there, it’s pretty clean and organized. The staff is really nice in my experience. James used to be the manager, he was awesome, but recently found out he is no longer there, however, the staff is always helpful and hardworking. I hardly ever see anyone sitting around doing nothing or snobby, they are friendly. I give them 5*‘s for their selection of many different items — they are in fact the SUPERSTORE, the mother of all Out of the Closet thrift stores.
ONE MORE THING — There is a changing room at this SUPERSTORE on San Fernando Road.

Getting here can be a bit tricky because it’s on a one-​way street parallel to the San Fernando Road. If you’re going Southbound, make a left before you hit the Eagle Rock intersection.
So this isn’t the cleanest Out of the Closet. I’ll highlight the good things about this place since the previous reviews have already pointed out their negative experiences. I give it two stars because I always find some great $ 1 CDs. I come here maybe once a year and will leave with 10 CDs. They also have decent Christmas decorations. The staff is friendly. Other than that, this is one of the most unorganized Out of the Closets I’ve been to.

Awful Store!
I used to go to this store lot (I love thrift stores). The last few times I’ve been there I noticed it going downhill a bit. Today I went there and I am vowing not to go back until they clean up thier act. The store no longer has changing rooms, the store has become totally disorganized, and the store has acquired a real grungy atmosphere. I’ve been to thrift stores as bad as this but those other awful thrift stores usually have great bargain prices. Out of the closet does not… they seem to be slowly getting more and more expensive for their old used clothing.
