Yeah, I know; I’ve heard all the rhetoric, most of it funded by our glorious, imperious government and organizations that«care about us» manned by people absolutely convinced of their own superiority who feel the need to control the lives of lesser people(everyone else in the nation): Smoking is BAD, EVIL, WRETCHED, DISGUSTING and will without a doubt land us smokers in an early grave, and no one will be at our funeral services because our friends will be too embarrassed to be associated with a repulsive old smoker, even after he’s dead. Save your breath, self-righteous tree-huggers and do-gooders, or I will follow you everywhere you go and blow cigarette smoke at you until you develop some horrid disease from second-hand smoke. Now that I’ve done my venting for the day, let me tell you about the Smoke Shop. I used to buy my smokes(USA Gold, an obscure brand) at a place a couple blocks away owned by a man from either Pakistan or India(my apologies to both Indians and Pakistanis, as I never asked the man where he was from and – as a local-grown white-bread gringo – I can’t easily tell the difference; please don’t lob any nukes at me!) who seemed to hate everyone except for me. He regularly shared his woes of how his rent was too high, how he was taxed too much, how many troubles he had with his distributers, how his no-good kids(who occasionally worked in the store) were useless and never listened to him… More than once I wished that he hated me, too, just so I wouldn’t have to listen to his griping anymore. So one day, the taxes and rent became too much for him and he closed up shop. That was when I discovered the Smoke Shop in a nearby strip mall, closer to my home than the previous business was. And what a pleasant surprise I had. First of all, they didn’t have my brand but immediately added it to their stock(within two days) and have kept it in stock regularly, even though I’m the only customer who buys them. Second, they charge me considerably less than the angry Indian/Pakistani man did. Third, the sales dude(I call him that because of his long hair and hip appearance) is extremely friendly, helpful and has a sense of humor – and he’s told me repeatedly to call if there’s ever any problem and he’d fix it. Fourth, they give me a free lighter(a cheap one, but it works – and it’s free) with every carton I buy. I almost wish that I had not abandoned my counter-culture ways when I’m in the store, because they have an amazing head shop in addition to the more legitimate items. You should probably know that the full name of this business in the Funky Habit Smoke Shop, although when you go there you will see no indications of this strangely apt name. The one problem with the place is that the strip mall in which it operates has one of the tiniest parking lots around, and it’s a very popular strip mall, so you can never find a parking place. They recently added a valet service that shuffles cars that won’t fit in the spaces around for the patrons, if you don’t mind paying for it. Otherwise, if you ever go here, I recommend that you park in the considerably larger strip mall across Santa Monica Blvd near Staples or Rite Aid(that has a HUGE parking lot) and walk half a block to the Smoke Shop. Just be sure you buy something at one of these places, or get a pizza at Pizza Hut(their«Cheese Lover’s» pizza is actually quite good), or some dried fish at the Filipino market, or some shoes at the Payless or something, anything, so they don’t have your car towed while you’re totally engrossed with checking out the bong selection at the Smoke Shop.
