Southern Girl Desserts moved locations and are worth seeking out. The new location is in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall., it’s a beautiful location with easy access. The cupcakes, cakes and all of their desserts leave you wanting for more. They use quality ingredients and all of the desserts are delicious. Their staff is also a joy to work with, you feel the southern hospitality.

Very good cupcakes here!
I have had the Red Velvet and the Sweet Potato Pie. The red velvet was very good but not my favorite. I don’t feel like the frosting was sweet enough and the cake wasn’t moist enough. However, comparing it with all the red velvet cupcakes I have had, this is top tier. The better cupcake I tried was the sweet potato pie. I absolutely loved the frosting, which had an almond taste to it. I think stopping by this place just to try the Sweet Potato Pie is worthwhile.

Anyway, Southern Girl is okay. Their prices are comparable with other cupcakeries. They’re moist. I’m not a big chocolate fan, so most of their cupcakes don’t appeal to me. Compared to other cupcake places their selection is smaller and they never seem to offer the daily flavors outlined on their website’s menu. I don’t believe they make their cupcakes on site, either.
At any rate, the store itself is nice– there are a lot of interesting knicknacks and gifts both in the front and back areas. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit Southern Girl, but it’s okay.

If i could give a half star then I would give this place 3.5 stars.
It was enjoyable but not a place I would actively go seek out again.
I ordered their sweet potato cupcake. It was on the pricier side of how much I would want to spend on a cupcake; however, I know we live in Los Angeles so these are probably average prices. I’m still getting used to prices here I just moved from Florida. I don’t mind shelling out a few extra dollars on things that are mind blowing good but these were not.
The cupcake was moist and flavor wise quite tasty. It truly tasted like a sweet potato pie. I’m not sure if it was intentional or if they did a poor job of incorporating the sweet potato mixture into the batter but I got a huge bite of mashed sweet potato. The sweet potato mixture was unevenly disbursed in the cake portion of the cupcake, and texturally unappealing. The frosting was overly sweet for me and quite dense.
Tasty but I wouldn’t go out of my way for these.

I was really craving a brownie today and was very very bummed to realize Breakaway Bakery (also on Pico) was closed for Passover. Plan B? Going down the street to Southern Girl Desserts.
I had both the chocolate brownie-​type cupcake and the sweet potato. They were tasty, but I don’t think I’ll be craving them like a crave Breakaway’s chewy bars anytime soon.
Also, the placement of these goods inside this gifts/​papergoods store is questionable. There is not place to sit, and things just feel a little cramped… I dunno. Not bad, but not a place that says «EAT.»

I bought a Bloomspot deal for a dessert party and on the day, they would not allow me to redeem the deal because I had not printed the coupon. While most deals do say they need a print out; I have yet to be refused when showing the deal on the phone. It’s the 21^st century and most vendors operate in it; allowing you to show the barcode. Not these guys. No biggie but worth mentioning.
The real issue is that the desserts were flavorless, not fresh (ordered 4 different flavors– the consistency of 2 of them were hard and not the same as the others) and not visually appealing. They tasted like a cake mix from a box and they were decorated amateur-​ishly. I could barely distinguish 1 cake taste from the other. Blah.

I contacted Southern Girls to provide beverage and desserts for a meeting in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Community Room. They had to go through a somewhat long, boring process for my employer to be able to use them as a vendor, but they were troupers and stuck it out.
Well worth it — they provided coffee and tea service and an assortment of cookies, mini cupcakes and brownies. Aside from how delicious everything was, Catarah set everything up beautifully, with ceramic cake stands displaying the cupcakes. I wish I’d taken pictures to show what a professional job they did. They arrived to complete setup in a timely manner and packed up to go containers for our meeting attendees to take home, so they were of course thrilled. I highly, highly recommend them. I only hope my employer will have another meeting at that location so that we can use their services again.
Please support this very friendly local business and make sure they are able to stay in the community for a long, long time!

Friendly service, and amazing delicious cakes. They are huge. (very tall and thick) The red velvet cake I had on my birthday (a friend ordered from here) was so good and moist, best red velvet cake ever! The other cakes are just as good. I ordered a strawberry cake with buttercream frosting for my friends birthday and she loved it.

Stopped in here for the second time yesterday and it was SO GOOD. I couldn’t choose between the 10 or so delicious sounding flavors, so I got the Sweet Potato and Red Velvet cupcakes, while the hubby chose the Church Lady Chocolate ($ 3.25 each).
We took them home and before I could even put my stuff down, Hubby was waiting at the table with the cupcake box and a big grin. I ate my Sweet Potato and he had the Chocolate. They were both super moist and fairly dense, just the way I like them. The frosting was sweet, but there was just the right amount of it. Cupcake perfection!
The only downside to the whole experience was that the girl at the counter wasn’t very friendly. No matter, you can be sure I will be back.

I had a Amazon Local Coupon for this bakery. I had an easy time parking at the meters, walked right in and got an assortment of a dozen cupcakes. I tried the red velvet which was so moist and tasted right on, like you would expect a full size cake to taste. I gave the dozen to my buddie as a present for her retirement. She and all my friends raved about the cupcakes flavor. I bought some Coco Maple, brownie, carrot and red velvet.
I will be back again! The flavors were off the charts!

Soooooooo moist and delicious! I’m glad I don’t live closer otherwise I’d be here everyday. My favorites are the peach cobbler cupcake and the sweet potato cupcake and I love that even the mini versions taste as good as the regular ones (a problem I have with some other cupcake joints). The staff is always helpful & pleasant so they easily get 4 stars from me. Once they accept credit cards I’ll change it to 5 in a heartbeat.
Do yourself a favor and try these cupcakes!!!

Sweet Potato Cupcake: 4 stars
— a little on the sweeter side

WOW! Don’t know how I have missed this place for so many months.
I see some old reviews on here, but as far as I know, this place only just opened several months ago. (I just went today and the young woman at the counter told me exactly, but I was bedazzled by the cupcake goodness in front of me, so I’ve already forgotten!)
Anyway, on to the cupcakey goodness. I found this place driving to a friend’s house and happily it is only about 7 blocks from home! I also thought I recognized the name from Cupcake Wars and sure enough I was right! My husband and I walked over today and were greeted by a friendly young woman who was welcoming and helpful. There is not a huge selection because there is not kitchen on the premises. They cook elsewhere and bring in the cupcakes. We bought 4 flavors — Lemon, Chocolate w/​Chocolate frosting, Chocolate w/​Vanilla frosting, and Red Velvet. I tasted each one and the cakes were SO moist! They were not laden with too much frosting either like a lot of other cupcakes. My picky hubby loved them and ate half of each cupcake causing rolled back eyes. He finished the rest after dinner. This is a great little business and I hope it thrives!
SO glad to have found and support this neighborhood gem!

So after trying to get a cupcake from this place for like a year, I finally go in and actually SEE (for the first time) cupcakes sitting there. Oh yes… cause this is a neighbor hood place I like to keep it in the family. I normally drive all the way over to my old ‘hood to get Crumbs on Larchmont. But since moving to the Mid-​City area I hate the drive. Anyhoo… on about the cupcakes.
So I walk in and am meet by a friendly gal, that offers to help me. I LOVED the fact that she washed her hands right there in front of me! She asked did I need to go over the flavors but I said no… all cupcakes were labelled accordingly. My choice for today… Red Velvet and Lemon.
The Lemon was good, nothing to write home about. The Red Velvet was ok too. What I did like about these cupcakes is that they weren’t SMOTHERED in frosting! Most cupcakes I always scrape off most of that sugar laden goop. These cakes had the perfect amount of frosting. Ido think they put a lil too much almond/​vanilla flavoring in the frosting tho’!
Overall, nice, moist cupcakes… I’ll go back again when I’m fiending for some cupcakes… But I still love my ol’ hood spot!

Southern Girl Desserts is located on the north side of Pico and east of Fairfax. My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon with the intent of satiating my daughter’s sweet tooth.
I’m not a cupcake connoisseur and neither is my partner in crime. The cupcake we tried was good, but the presentation, i.e., appearance, packaging, and display, didn’t meet up to the north of $ 3 competitions.
The staff was very courteous. There’s meter parking in the front.

My sister bought me a dozen cupcakes for my bday and they were…*clears throat*…THE BEST CUPCAKES I’VE EVER HAD! I say that with complete seriousness. I’ve had all the big dogs in cupcakes in LA (Sprinkles, Crumbs, Hansen’s) and these cupcakes are so awesome that I put my diet on hold for a week so I could consume 80% of these cupcakes by my gosh-​darn self!
If you don’t believe me, go to their store and buy a Red Velvet Cupcake. You will NOT be sorry! :)

I came by sereveral time and you were nit open, but now I am sooooooo glad Southern Girl Desserts is open, the cupcakes are the BEST. I recently tried the rum cake OMG!!! that’s all I can say. I am not a dessert lover, but now I look forward to drop by after my haircut. Whoever is doing the baking it is truly taste homemade, it reminds me of my mom’s cakes.

How can people give this place bad reviews! Stop being so critiical shit happens build a bridge and get over it!
So back to raiting this place. When my hubby and I walked in we met the sweetest lady ever! She started talking to our baby that’s 8 months and was so nice. She let us sample a cupcake with maple frosting. Omg did it taste like heaven. The cupcake was moist and delicious. She also let us sample the ice cream they have there. We tasted the mango, chocolate dipped strawberries and the vanilla. They were all really good. The red velvet cupcake we bought was so good too every thing was great but I just can’t get over how sweet the owner was she made this such a great experience. I know we are talking about cupcakes but I love cupcakes and they make me so happy: D

I used these ladies for my 30^th b-​day party last year in September and they were a HIT! I ordered the banana pudding shooters, mini hennessy and coke cupcakes, and the mini red velvet cupcakes. YUM-​O!!! I am not a big fan of hennessy or chocolate but these were so moist and actually had a slight taste of hennessy that I had to love them.
The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because I am only going off of my guest reviews. They all went so fast I was only able to get a bite of my BF hennessy cupcake and I was able to steal a banana pudding which was super yummy.
I am preparing for my baby shower now :) and will for sure be using the these ladies for my dessert bar but this time I will make sure to taste EVERYTHING I order. I see they do cake pops now so I’m excited.

Congrats to the proprietors for running a business down the toilet with one Groupon offering. I don’t know what happened but I suspect they ran into financial issues before the Groupons were sold. How else can anyone explain having to close the store just over a month after the day of the Groupons? I’m just speculating but the ladies probably thought that the money from the Groupons would solve whatever problem they had and it didn’t.
I felt played and lied to. Instead of offering Groupon customers a full refund and an apology, they made us drive to a random café inside a random office building in Beverly Hills to pick up our cupcakes. No problem, BH isn’t that far from me but c’mon — between the hours of 8:30 to 3pm M-​F? I’m pretty sure 90% of the customers have jobs and can’t just leave whenever we want. When I contacted the company about the terrible available hours, the owners of SGD told me that those were the only hours of the café. Sorry, but I’m out of luck. Uh, thanks for nothing.
I’m pretty sure a lot of customers just forfeited the Groupon and allowed the owners to keep their $ 8. I was about to but I didn’t because it’s not fair to us. Finally, after months of waiting, I had one opportunity to stop by the random café during the random hours. I was still hopeful when I entered the café and I asked the guy there about the cupcakes. He opened the refrigerator and took out chilled cupcakes. Who knows how many days they had been sitting in there?
If I wanted old, stale, small, mediocre cupcakes, I would’ve gone to Ralphs. These cupcakes were way smaller than they were described on the Groupon. This was a total bait-​and-​switch. Whether it was intentional or not, the way things turned out was completely unacceptable.
