The Kind Bite

I was SO hopeful when my partner and I found a food delivery service that met both of our dietary restrictions (vegan and gluten free). Sadly, the food was sorely disappointing.
The (fairly) good: I had no packaging issues as many other reviewers have described. Also, the soups were decent enough, but lacking in spice, depth and flavor… much like the rest of the meals we tried.
The bad: the vegan meats literally made my partner sick to her stomach to taste. We threw them all out. Neither of our two Indian dishes looked nor tasted like their traditional counterparts. What was dubbed a mixed vegetable curry was simply mashed up rice with fennel seeds and carrots. (My partner says it was only «the idea of vegetables».) The aloo gobi meal (a indian dish we have loved elsewhere whose name means «potato cauliflower») was basically flavorless mashed potatoes. No thick gravy with either of those, as there is normally.
All in all, pretty gross. Most of our food ended up in the trash. Definitely feels like a waste of money, even with the online deal we got for 50% off.

I’ve gotten 4 packages from them. The first package was good, and then the quality went down. I bought 3 vouchers from one of those deal sites, so I had to spend the rest of the vouchers. I don’t even like the meals that I used to like in the beginning, and I’ve given a lot of them away. I’ve been trying to finish the rest (they’re in the freezer) but I have to make myself do it. They’re not appetizing.

I had high hopes for The Kind Bite but they disappointed at every turn. First off, they say that they ship out on the Monday after the order is placed, but mine came a couple of weeks after that. I never received a shipping notice (as promised), so I had no idea that a perishable package was coming until I saw it sitting outside my door one night. The food itself was average at best, and a few of the dishes were downright bad (the veggie stew, the tofu sesame ginger dish, and the pear and sweet potato dish). Heads up too – if you buy a «month’s worth of food,» their definition is 24 servings/​month, and the servings themselves are quite small. For instance, the veggie «stew» was 1 cup at best. It definitely did not fill me up. Please save your $$ on this one. I think the concept is great – they just need to make some major adjustments on service and quality/​quantity of food if they want to succeed.

I found Kind Bite thru a deal I purchased on Gilt City — 26 meals for $ 125. This represented a savings of 50% off as the regular price is $ 250.
I know how to use the internet and always try and Google reviews before purchase, but this time I didn’t. I’m disappointing to say that my experiences were much like the other customers who had negative things to say.
Here’s my summary:
1) I had difficulties redeeming my voucher. I tried contacting the Kind Bite directly, but they didn’t respond to my email and when I phoned, no one answered and there wasn’t a way to leave a message. I contacted Gilt City and they got it sorted out.
2) After I redeemed my voucher, I was told that I would receive my order within the week. Sounds good! I started getting a little worried when it hadn’t shown up after a week and a half. At this point, I googled the company and read a bunch of negative reviews. I decided to keep an open mind and contact them. Same as before when I was redeeming the voucher, they didn’t respond to my online message, email or phonecall.
3) After 2 weeks of waiting I contacted Gilt City and was told that they couldn’t issue a refund because it was now in the merchants hands since I had already placed an order. One day, 2.5 weeks after placing my order a box arrived on my doorstep — it had arrived!
4) The food arrived still frozen, but all the ice had melted away. Some of the containers had broken and a little bit of the contents had spilled into the box. I lost one meal of food but that was it.
5) The containers that the food comes in are not what I would consider something that you can put in your lunchbag and take to work — they are very fragile, and if you are planning on taking them anywhere, you have to put them into another or they will break and make a mess, rest assured.
6) I’ve eaten most of the meals and they aren’t great. They are edible, but not delicious. I’m not a picky eater either. I wouldn’t offer one of these to a friend, I’ll just say that.
7) Lately everytime I eat one of the meals, I get a slight stomach ache. I have noticed it for the last 4 meals I have eaten. They have remained frozen, but I’m starting to think they’ve gone bad.
I wouldn’t order from this company again. I feel like I wasted my money. Anyone would be better off going to the grocery store and buying Amy’s organic meals or any other frozen vegan entrée. Too bad :-(

I should really learn to read Unilocal reviews before buying anything, even when it’s offered by a reputable company like GiltCity (no complaints with them — they are very helpful and professional).
Which is more than I can say about the Kind Bite. Like Shelley L., I bought the gilt coupon and was really excited about trying the food. I bought the Comfort Food Box, which arrived after 3 days on the road. Unfortunately when I opened the box, the sight was anything but comforting. Of the 24 packages, only 12 survived intact. 5 completely split open, contents scattered and covering everything with frozen rice and curry. 7 had their seals broken. Most of the food is still frozen (thankfully), except for the tofu. Is it any wonder though — the serving size of the tofu meals is so small, there must have been little to freeze to begin with!
And to add insult to injury, they called me Jared in the letter.
I haven’t tried the food yet, but it smelt delicious, mixed together and scattered in the styrofoam box like that. To be kind to the Kind Bite, at least they made clean-​up easy: I just picked up the orange plastic bag and threw my food away.

Well, you got it.
I received a call from Michael, who manages The Kind Bite and Gobble Green. He was not happy that I had written negative reviews for both businesses (apparently they are the same company but have different offerings). He has invested thousands of dollars into both companies. Both companies are under new management, and have new employees. I did state that when I wrote my reviews, except for my most recent, it was under old management, and I had no way of knowing that there was new management. He went into detail about how they are making changes there in regards to customer service and packaging. He also talked about how Unilocal was trying to get him to spend $ 750 a month to get positive reviews filtered into the Unilocal rating. As you can see below, my most recent review pointed out that the packaging was faulty. He offered to refund me my other Lifebooker vouchers with cash so I won’t have the opportunity to write subsequent negative reviews on the product. I said that I would like to use the vouchers and, if quality improves, I would update my review to be more positive. Apparently, this wasn’t ok either because 1) he claimed that I didn’t like the food (not true) and 2) that the packaging would still have issues because of how freezing affects the packaging (understandable) and that he wanted to avoid any future negative reviews.
Having been in sales for several years and having had experience with faulty product from the companies I represent and having to address those issues with customers, the ideal situation is for the customer to say that they are willing to give it another go to see if quality improves. I found his reaction surprising. So you don’t want the chance to get an updated review that reflects a potential positive change? Hm, ok.
He mentioned that he looked me up both on LinkedIn and Facebook and knows what I look like… just in case we come across each other. I really didn’t feel comfortable with that remark and I have since deleted my LinkedIn profile and have updated my privacy settings on Facebook so no one can look me up.
After the lengthy phone call, I received an email to my personal email address. This company, being a food delivery service, knows my personal address. After the email, I felt even more uncomfortable. I contacted Lifebooker this morning to request a refund of the remaining vouchers that I purchased. Again, not because I didn’t want to use them, but because Michael wanted to refund me.
Here’s what I learned. The old management for these companies didn’t return phone calls or emails about orders and neglected to fulfill them. The new management will reach out to you on your cell phone about your negative review and look you up on Facebook and LinkedIn. Ultimately I felt intimidated to not write a 1 star review, but I did anyway.

I wanted to like KindBite, I really did. I decided to try a gilt coupon for the «month» 24 servings. I went on the website, picked out my meal type (lo cal) and entered my voucher. So far so good. I put in my info, and place the order. I place an order, get a confirmation email and that’s it. Six days later I get an email from fedex saying that a package is coming my way. The package arrives a day later.
I’m excited to see what’s inside. When I open the first layer, imagine my horror when the packaging is not sealed and there are chunks of frozen food everywhere. Of the 24 packages, 6 were open and had spilled contents. You may say, well 75% is pretty good. Pretty good is not good enough when your whole business is selling flash frozen meals!

Sorry to say their food is very mediocre. One dish out of the package I look forward to eating, the rest ended up in the trash or extremely doctored to make interesting enough to eat. Big waste of money!

Kind indeed. Great service too.

Small portions, overpriced, overpromised, not cold enough, poor communication/​service. Got sick from food.
I bought the LIfeBooker deal for «a month» of dinners. First of all, this means 24 «dinners» not 30. Second, the portions are very small. The lentil soup is just a bit over 8 ounces. With the deal prices come to $ 5.20 per «dinner» so this is a total rip-​off. The casserole is very small, MUCH smaller than shown in the picture below. There is no way they are actually selling this for full price which is double that! The food is not even organic.
And like someone commented below, the delivery is very slow (6 days) and I’m sorry, the food does not stay that cold. I am concerned about safety and may throw all the food out as I had a stomach ache after eating it.
The communication is terrible. There is no notice of when the food is sent out.
They also made tons of substitutions in my box.
The Sesame Tofu is INEDIBLE.
I got terrible stomach cramps for two days after eating their food.
When I asked them to compensate me for the 6 dinners and small portions they said I had to go to LifeBooker.
I hope I can save your money… don’t do it!

I really can’t say enough good things about the KindBite.
In addition to having a novel menu and unbeatable prices for a food home delivery service, their customer service is unparalleled.
When my food shipment disappeared due to mail disruptions during Hurricane Sandy, the Kind Bite replaced my entire order, no questions asked.
It’s been a week since I received my replacement shipment. My meals arrived nice and frozen, even though I live on the East Coast., and I’ve been feasting ever since!
I couldn’t be happier.

I bought a deal on Lifebooker and ordered the comfort foods box. I had a special request and emailed the contact the website provided. I got a response right away and they were very accommodating. when I did not receive my box of food, they immediately replaced my order no questions asked. they were apologetic and I got the new one in a few days. I’m not a vegan, just trying to eat healthier and this seemed like an easy way to do so. the food is actually really good. I would recommend the food and the great customer service.

I can’t even say what a relief it is to have found this amazing company! Not only is everything gluten-​free, cholesterol-​free, and vegan, it’s all very tasty. And it’s delivered to your doorstep, so it couldn’t be more convenient. My favorite dishes include the lentil soup, the veggie stew, the mixed veggie curry — not to mention the delicious cookies! For vegans, celiacs, and anyone else who’s interested in eating more healthy food (that also happens to be convenient), this is a must-​try :)
