I was looking for a nice gift for my fiancé to celebrate our engagement, and I wanted something dramatic, lasting, and unexpected, and after way too many hours surfing the net for That Perfect Thing, I came across an extremely random Facebook thread on the topic of Beauty and saw a link to The Makeup Light’s Portable Vanities that an LA-based makeup artist had posted. I was struck by their elegance and simplicity, and figured that every little girl grows up secretly wanting some kind of movie star vanity deal in her bedroom where she can get ready for a sexy evening out, and this thing seemed to promise it. We have a small apartment, so I was happy to find out that it could be mounted on the wall and not need to sit on dresser space that she can’t spare. Fortunately for me the company is in the LA area, and they’re totally cool with random people swinging by to check out the products. Not really knowing jack-all about beauty stuff, I was happy to see in person that this thing was as elegant as it seemed on the web. It’s built solid, with clean lines and nice finishes like corner braces and beveled mirrors. I was told that the LED panel light was balanced to daylight, so what you look like in the vanity is exactly what you will look like outside, so no more surprises. I guess bad surprises makeup-wise happen to girls sometimes when they step outside? I never really knew this but I guess lots of girls have horror stories of bad lighting screwing up their makeup. Anyway, it’s not necessarily cheap, but it was correlated to me as the iPhone of makeup mirrors: handmade, high-end, portable, simple to use, and something that will last for decades(and if it didn’t for some reason, they’d take care of me even after the year warranty expired.) I liked hearing that, so I plunked down the $$$$$$ and gave it to her. Let’s just say she was awestruck as hell, and I was happy to have found something that she’ll get a ton of use out of in the coming years. Basically she uses it every morning and weekends when we go out, and she always looks amazing. I mean, she looks amazing anyways, but I do think the soft and pure white light of the vanity helps a bit too. So if you maybe have a woman in your life who loves makeup(and really, what woman doesn’t?), I’d wholeheartedly recommend this light. She even takes it off the wall when we jaunt out to Palm Springs/Santa Barbara/San Diego for the weekend so she can use it there. If that’s not the kind of commitment that speaks highly of a product, I don’t know what is.
