I bought a green zebra plant for $ 5 that did nothing for the first 2 months and grew to only about 18 inches, with huge, curly, leathery foliage. Then, suddenly, it exploded with blossoms that hardened off into dozens and dozens of fruit. The other plants I bought at Japanese markets and Japanese gardening centers have not been nearly as productive or consistent as this one. Maybe it’s the variety, but all got the same compost, water, pruning and sun. All planted same time. Where others fell prey to white flies, red mites, the occasional tomato worm, the zebra was a champ of champs, dropping only a few blossoms in extreme heat and not succumbing to curly top, blossom rot or anything else. What a pleasant surprise! I will surely be saving these seeds.

TomatoMania is a traveling tomato sale that specializes in obscure, cherry, grape and heirloom tomatoes and seeds. While they do have an abundance of niche-y tomatoes available, the spectrum of their offerings include your normal everyday garden varieties like the beef steaks. I have been able to go to their sale held at the Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas two of the last three years and have found a great bunch of long lasting and great tasting cherry/grape tomatoes. These varieties in particular are great to have for apartment or condo dwellers because they’re really easy to grow in pots/planter boxes and they’ve been pretty low maintenance besides needing a good bit of sun and water. The tomatoes offered at TomatoMania sales might not be the cheapest, but you’ll have fun growing some really fun, interesting and really tasty tomatoes.
