History

Established in 1999.

Art went to hair school in Pasadena. Then trained with Toni & Guy. Worked in San Marino at Ravissant,

and then hopped over to Hollywood.

After 13 years at Transcend, in 1997 Art was named «Best Hairstylist» in Los Angeles by Los Angeles Magazine! Works of Art was opened in 1999 on the then ‘quiet’ block of Hollywood at Vermont. As the district grew, with new restaurants and shops opening, so did the buzz around his Salon. Everyday, Art Loves going to work — as he is dedicated to being his best: And he loves turning people on to the community.

Also his Exhibit A Gallery has been showing some of L.A.‘s finest artists for almost 10 years, including Music and Spoken Word Performance. More «New York Loft» instead of trendy Hollywood Salon, Art’s goal was for people to feel comfortable and at home — mission accomplished: envision deep wood finishes, and retro post modern style.

building a strong reputation as a sought after haircutter, with

over 20 years in the business.

Not only was Art voted

«BEST HAIRSYLIST» in L.A. by Los Angeles Magazine in 1997,

his new Salon was voted «Best Salon in Los Angeles» by

LA WEEKLY Readers not once, but twice.

Now, one of the most «YELPED» salons in town, Art

continues to be one of the most thorough, and passionate

stylists with his shears. Art also stays on the literal cutting

I love this salon! I have been with Mitzi for about 6 months and I rave about her to all my friends. She’s not only «The Hairdresser To The Stars,» she treats every client like they’re stars themselves. Her haircut is magical and her coloring superb.

Art takes what you want as a client very seriously, has a great line of hair color products, is honest with you, a pleasure to be around during the hair coloring process, and clearly takes great pride in his salon and the work that he does. He approaches hair as you would expect an artist would and it is very important to him that you are happy. Since he owns his salon you are not herded in and out like a sheep on the clock and the prices are extREMEly reasonable.

So I desperately needed a hair cut. I check through Unilocal and started making phone calls trying to get an appointment. I can’t believe finding a hair salon turn out to be a huge struggle. I saw that this place closes at 6 and I don’t get off work until sometime after 6. I’m thinking they probably won’t even take my appointment but then I figure oh well let me give them a call anyway. And so my search was over.
They took my appointment even after their closing hours and all I can say is I freaking love my haircut… I couldn’t stop looking at it. Lol Everyone there are so friendly and professional. Art did an AMAZING job and I definitely will be back and I’m not going anywhere else. I found my spot!

GENIUS! Art (the owner) is absolutely a genius when it comes to hair. I am unfortunate enough to have not one, but two serious cowlicks on my head. They are positioned in such a way that the hair in the back of my head separates and it looks like I have a huge bald spot. The cowlicks have gotten progressively worse over the past year or so, and I had tried everything I could think of to hide them, to no avail. I was struggling, seriously struggling. Feeling desperate and at my wit’s end, I called Works of Art and explained my situation. Art was able to fit me in that same day, and after examining my hair, he recommended using a relaxer just on the cowlick area. Well, it actually worked! The cowlicks are gone and I am now able to wear my hair down without worrying that I have a bald spot in the back of my head. You can’t even begin to imagine how happy this makes me! Super, super happy. I’ve shared my cowlick struggle with several other stylists in the past, but no one ever suggested anything that actually worked to correct them. I wish I’d found Works of Art sooner!
Art also gave me an absolutely gorgeous haircut. He actually listened when I told him that I’m trying to grow my hair out, and cut off just the minimum that was needed to freshen things up, yet somehow still made a huge impact. My hair has so much more body and movement now, without losing any length.
Art and his staff also couldn’t possibly be nicer people, the salon itself is a beautiful space, and parking was super easy (found a metered spot right out front). They even fed my meter for me halfway through the appointment, and Art gave me a lesson on how to properly tease my hair. In short, I had an absolutely awesome experience at this salon. I will definitely be back, and I would recommend Works of Art to anyone who is looking for a great salon.

I just had my first haircut with Art, and I could not recommend this great place more highly! Art was excellent at listening to what I wanted before starting to cut my hair, and asked at several points along the way whether I was liking it so far. As a short-​haired lady, precision is key for me. I was very impressed with the care he took over every angle and part of my cut. He understood that a short haircut should not take a short time to do. Pixie cut lovers, Works of Art is a great choice!

I didn’t realize right away that Art had completely missed cutting one side of my hair, but when I showered afterwards and saw how long my hair was I was shocked that he had 5 stars and his name on the door. Maybe he was having an off day, but that was the worst cut that I’ve ever gotten.

No one is happier about my move back to Los Feliz than my hair. Why? Because after two years living up near San Francisco, no one came close to making my hair as happy as Art, the genius/​owner/​gentleman behind Works of Art. The store name might be a play on words (it is really the owner’s name) but it is truth in advertising.
Got my first cut today since being back and I had almost forgotten that I can actually look good. Best haircut in Los Angeles. If you live in the area, no excuse not to go. If you live anywhere nearby, make the drive.
I’m a fella, but word is he’s even better with women’s cuts and coloring and consultation. He’s particularly great if you are thinking of changing things up and are a bit timid. He will talk you through what he’s going to do and inspire you to try something new.

Just had my hair colored and styled by the master Art! He saved my hair, I thought I needed a color correction but he said he could give me the same results with highlights and a toner. AND HE DELIVERED! Best hair stylist in LA, so glad I found him. Oh and the salon is so cool as well. Has beautiful wood décor, feels substantial and warm not like these «über chic cold» salons that are there one day and gone the next. Works of art salon has been in business 14 years that’s quite an achievement in my book. Thank you Art

The struggle to find a great hairstylist is real!!!
That’s why I’m so glad Steven is working here now… we met years ago when he was at Barras Salon in Highland Park.
The first time he cut my hair I was blown away by his precision and attention to detail. He knows exactly how to tame my thick shapeless unruly hair into va-​va-​voom hair that is so good I don’t even style it! I literally just put it in a bun to dry into waves and it looks fantastic. The past couple visits, he also gave me amazing caramel/​blonde highlights/​ombré that I’ve been told really compliment and brighten my skin tone! He even does home visits if you need too! Say what???
AND on top of his major hairdressing skills, he is hilarious, easy to talk to and will make you feel comfortable, which IMO is a priceless quality… Especially if you’re spending hours at the salon. Don’t hesitate to see him if you want to look and feel like a goddess. Thanks Steven!

Art is a genius! I came in to fix a disastrous attempt at ombré which left my hair looking dead and my face washed out and miserable. Art knew exactly how to fix it. He blended in my natural color and added highlights which complimented my coloring. I could not be happier. The space is full of natural light, optimum for getting the color you need.
I also LOVE my haircut. Art recommended he shape my long layers away from my face, which even some of the most expensive salons in Beverly Hills never figured out is the best shape for my face.
And I’m not sure of his name, but the guy who blew out my hair was stellar.
I will definitely be gong back.

Steven is a fantastic hairdresser. I have been trying to grow my hair long for years now & I recently discovered him & only after one cut my hair is already growing. I was so impressed that he cut my hair dry, I’ve known for years it’s important to have a dry cut when wanting length & he suggested the dry cut from our initially conversation about my hair goals. LOVE!
He listens, he understands & pleasing his clients is a top priority. If your lucky you will get a random serenade from him. He is full of life & there’s never a dull moment when you’re in his chair.
He’s not only awesome with styling, He’s also awesome with color! He recently did a light summer ombré to my hair & the result was a beautiful sun kissed effect.
So all-​in-​all Steven is 100 in my book.

I have to say if you want to get your hair cut (lets say «designed») by one of the most talented hair-​stylists in the city, then go find Mitzi Spallas.
Mitzi has years of experience working on high-​maintenance celebs and brings that point of view to your hair. She doesn’t just cut hair, she figures out what color will look best on you, what cut will flatter you — its never just a cut and go, same style trim please. She really takes the time to consider you.
Her schedule can be a bit busy but by all means, worth the effort! I’ve turned other friends on to her who honestly come back and tell me that they like their hair for the first time!

Art is one of two people to have ever cut my hair in such a way that garners compliments from strangers. The other was the senior creative director of Bumble and bumble, and he had my permission to go hog wild. That was at the tail end of 2009.
+1 for being able to #cut through whatever stoner word fog I puke out when he asks what I’m looking for.

I realized after getting compliments on my hair from two strangers (weeks after having it done) today that I was overdue to give Jessica a stellar review for her color correction work on my mop. I came in with black hair that I had dyed for years and left two sessions later with red hair that looked natural, vibrant, and which came without having to trade it for a straw-​like Brillo pad. She was honest about what was realistic and what wasn’t and came up with a game plan that didn’t require me setting up a sleeping bag in the salon to achieve the look all in one go. It wasn’t exactly cheap, but I’m not trying to look cheap and got what I paid for, so I was not at all surprised and won’t hesitate to continue going to her for upkeep.
If you are looking to make a dramatic change, have fun with color, or have been burned by half-​hearted attempts to give you what you ask for at a salon, I highly recommend giving Jessica a call!
