Love the Grippo dusted fries. You can’t go wrong with the Chicken Philly Cheese Steak!

I used to live in Philadelphia. I’d get a cheesesteak at lunch and have it half for lunch and half for dinner or save half for lunch the following day probably 3 – 4 times per week. Pretty much lived on cheesesteaks and the halal and soul food trucks that parked outside my work. Yes, my diet was a bit low in variety but it made up for it in deliciousness. Since leaving Philly, I have sometimes ordered a «Philly» cheesesteak here and there from East Coast to West Coast to the middle parts. I have always been disappointed. While the sandwiches mostly tasted just fine, they were not PHILLY cheesesteaks IMHO. Enter Barry’s Cheesesteaks. I have been meaning to try this place for a long time but my usual lunch out in that part of town tends to fall on a Sunday and they are not open then. But, I happened to be needing lunch on a Saturday when my mother came by for a visit and she happened to be driving past Barry’s anyway. We shared a takeout order of the 12 inch(14?) cheesesteak with mushrooms and onions and provolone plus some Grippo’s seasoned fries and slaw. The cheesesteak was tip-top. Stuffed with meat, just the right amount of juice, meat sliced correctly, and the bread… the bread was the right chewy and soft mix that so many imitators failed on. A generous helping of food. Leftovers also reheated just as well as the cheesesteaks I subsisted on in Philly. The fries were well seasoned and I am sure would have been quite good fresh out of the fryer at the store, I never expect fries to travel well anyways. I had a little laugh at the story my mother told me about ordering the fries– she asked what«Grippos» seasoning was like and the waitress asked if she had ever had Grippo’s chips. My mom said«No, I have not» and the waitress replied, «Well, they taste just like Grippo’s chips» in a very enthusiastic voice. So Mom ordered the fries with still no clue about seasoning but a spirit of adventure. Cole slaw was fresh, mayo based but fairly ordinary. Not my style of slaw but nothing wrong with it. This place does both food and business right.

This place is great. You’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t get Grippo fries.

We visited this place as we were passing through Kentucky on our way home to Michigan. I would give him 5 stars for the story behind the place. However, the food was not 5 stars. The cheeseburgers are very low quality and I would probably not order them again. The Philly cheesesteaks where yummy and very large portion size. The boneless chicken wings were also good.

We were looking for some food after going to the movies. After consulting Unilocal we decided to try some cheese steaks with the kids. From the outside this place doesn’t look like much but test me, don’t let that influence a decision to try the place. The staff was friendly and ready to offer recommendations for each of us. I was impressed when I found out that there is not only good food and fair prices but the owner has a mission and purpose. On the counter there is a prayer jar for customers who may have a request. I was told that my tip would also be used for missions within the church where the owner is a pastor. There is nothing fancy about this place but if you’re ready for a great cheesesteak sandwich and fries that taste like Grippo chips give it a try.

This is a really awesome place for cheesesteaks outside of Philly. We are in town to visit family and they took us here. I gotta say this place is it! My wife grew up in Philly and we had our fair share of cheesesteaks all over the place and Berry is on top of this list. You gotta try the Big Berry — delicious! We will be back the next time we visit.

No where in the city is touching this place. It’s the best steak sandwich in town, hands down. If you are in or around louisville, do yourself a favor and try to finish one of these sandwiches. Oh yeah, and Grippos fries, yo.

The best cheese steak I have ever had. It’s a little restaurant but the food is wonderful. I have only had the cheese steak and wings, but have never been disappointed. Love this place.

Do NOT, I repeat, do not, judge this book by it’s cover. It will be hard not to want to judge this place by appearance alone, but once you read Pastor Barry’s story and eat his cheesesteaks and fries, you will soon forget you are eating on a card table. You read that right, this place is supplied with card tables, fold out chairs and paper towels.(Go ahead and grab yourself about 6 paper towels because you will need them while eating this sandwiches.) There are TVs to watch your football on and devotionals to read at each card table; you soon forget the appearance and feel like you are at home or a church fellowship dinner. Both of which are not bad. And even if you are not a religious person you can appreciate this story. Pastor Barry hires troubled youth to work in his restaurant and mentors them through his work. If that doesn’t touch upon your heart, that is fine. At least still get a cheesesteak. The prices are frankly too low in my opinion for the serving size, but that has never really been a problem for anyone. The serving sizes are massive. The Grippo fries are on point. Grippo fries… as in… the Grippo chips. That is the ONLY thing you need to order on the menu if you go to Barry’s, but you will be kicking yourself if you don’t get a cheesesteak. My husband and I shared a serving of fries and a Big Barry Cheesesteak. Total cost plus two cans of soda was 14 $. I honestly, probably could have shared that one sandwich with a 3rd person. It featured 4 different types of cheese and 3 different types of meat. Nothing short of perfection. Honestly, I could probably eat here every day and not even be upset about the weight gain.

Pretty tasty and good value for the money. Unless you are really hungry I would recommend a six inch cheesesteak because it is more than enough(see photo). Really two people could split on regular grippo fry also. A lot of Christian themed decorations and books around(I am good with that). Nice, clean hole in the wall type of place. They usually have the best food and this is in line with that. Soon the line will be out of the building once people find out about it. Friendly staff.

Wow, I am not a food critic, but this food is fantastic. I ordered the 6 inch Pepper Cheese steak which absolutely filled me up. But, I also ordered the BIGBARRY, as I think it is called, it is not on the menu that I bought home, but it’s big, it’s spicy, and it’s delicious. I got this food to go and I suggest that you give this place a try, and I bet you will go back. Great portions, plenty of meat and be ready with plenty of napkins if you get the BIGBARRY. These were both Cheesesteaks sandwiches and I am curious as to what other great items await me on my return. While waiting on your food, make it a point to read about Barry’s story on the wall.

Straight forward Philly Cheese Steak place. Barry has the bread brought in fresh and to-order according to true Philly standards. The heart behind this business is evident in the food that is served and the lives that are changed through the work done here. Barry’s joy is catching. Make sure you meet him, and enjoy a legit Cheese Steak while you’re at it!

My husband and I shared a 12 inch hot classic cheese steak. Wow it was so much food we could barely finish. Definitely a good bang for your buck place. It was decently spicy due to the peppers and a little salty for me. The star of the show was the perfect bread. The place was defiantly a dive and very colorful but the staff was very friendly and the dining area was very clean. There was no changing table in the bathroom which is a big deal to me but over all a great experience.

I kept seeing this on the list of restaurants near my work and I saw a few of my friends had left reviews so I just had to check it out. We got there right before the peak lunch time and it got pretty busy so glad I got there earliesh. I ordered the Big Barry 6″ and added mushrooms and also got the Grippo fries with cheese on the side. It took a good 15 minutes before it was ready, but I’m good with that because they’re making it fresh. When I got to work, my eyes were so big looking at the cheesy goodness. It was way too much food for one meal, as you can see by the photos. It tasted great. I can’t eat like this often, but I thought if I was going to have a cheat meal, might as well cheat big. ;)

Great hole in the wall place. I ordered a 6-inch Big Barry and fries. Came out around $ 8. The 6-inch here is nothing compared to a Subway, where you feel like they either don’t know how to measure or never put enough on there. It was absolutely massive and delicious. When you take into account the size, the price was a steal. Also the fries were nicely seasoned. Very nice workers as well. Definitely a place to check out.

I stopped at this place on a road trip thanks to Unilocal!I just got hungry and looked for cheesesteaks, as that IS my M.O. It’s really more of a 3.5 star review as it’s CLOSER to a real Philly Cheesesteak than I can even find in Nashville, but still not an outright wonderful cheesesteak. They use cheese sauce instead of actual Wiz, but have white American cheese. Also giving the extra half nod to the people that work there. They were very friendly and excited I found them on Unilocal! It appears they have made almost no effort to be on social media, but ended up on there anyways. They had some concoction with cheese sauce, cheese, bacon and a bunch of other stuff that looked pretty good, but if I’m just trying a place out I try to go with my standard. It was cheesy(I ordered extra American as I usually get white American with light wiz wit’ onions and mushrooms, and broccoli raab if they have it — they didn’t), greasy(not excessively, just the greasy it should be), and pretty good. The rolls they use were still pretty good even though they weren’t Amoroso. Decent place.

Fantastic food. For the price, you get a humongous cheesesteak. They say it is a 12 inch, but it has to be bigger than that. Probably more like a 14 – 15 inch. The sandwich by itself is more than enough food. I put mustard on it, and it took it to another level. I ordered fries, but I didn’t need them. I made myself eat them, but I couldn’t finish. Far, far too much food. But they had a really good seasoning. As someone else mentioned, the owner tends to employee people that need a leg up. For that alone, I applaud the guy and will visit as often as I am able. THIS is the type of business that needs to not close because of $$$. So, I say send your money this restaurant’s way. You will be getting fantastic food, lots of it, and you’ll be supporting a good cause.
