The food was good. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Nice sized portions. One of my top Indian restaurants. The dish was a little sweeter than I am normally used too but still had great flavor. The garlic naan is the best I have ever had, very fresh and garlicky. The rice had good flavor but had odd pieces of spices left in the rice. Just don’t eat those. Overall, I will be coming back to eat here, possibly trying something new.

My favorite Indian restaurant in Louisville. Serves much tastier, fresher versions of the most common Indian dishes while also offering less common Southern Indian entrees. Nearly gave it four stars, though, because Shalimar remains my favorite Indian buffet place — better buffet variety and usually offers paneer dishes. For dinner, though, DakShin can’t be beat.

This was my favorite place to eat, but lately it has been degrading and sadly today was the day i write it off. I used to go every week and it was great. There was a lady who worked there who was always in traditional dress and she was awesome at her job. But i have not seen her in a while and i feel like she held the place together. Today my chicken tiki masla was totally seperated. As in lots of oil on top. And the customer service was awful. After the food was delivered no one stopped by at all. Only reason i got the cokeinordered was from the gentleman who was going around refilling the water cups… And they said they did not have new cooks but they couldnt make mushroom martar, a dish my fiancé has always gotten there. And at the end my eyes were burning and running from the random smoke taking over the restaurant. Sad day.

Very good Indian food and big servings. Even though I live 45 minutes away, I usually try to get a carryout every other week. When I have time and in the area in the morning, I try the buffet. The buffet is excellent, as it usually has a variety of both North and South Indian food.

Decided to munch on the food from here yesterday, it was a very bad decision I must say. Had ordered to go, even after one hour of placing the order food wasn’t ready. After reaching home with the food, we open it to see the non veg platter not cooked properly. All its masala(sauces) was undone and we had to fry it before having. Moreover a couple of chapattis we got were burnt too. Lamb sukha has lost its original flavor but was good.

Dakshin knows how to make great Indian food. That isn’t in question. The reason for the three stars has more to do with the physical restaurant than the food, but I’ll get into that in a sec. I went to Dakshin last week for a friend’s birthday party. The food, as always, was great. I particularly liked the samosas. These puffs of filled goodness were steaming, freshly made. And the pastry was slightly salty. I also greatly enjoyed the chicken tikka masala. I know — I’m one of those people who always order chicken tikka masala at Indian restaurants. I’ve tried other Indian dishes, and I know that chicken tikka masala is actually English, not Indian. But I like what I like. And I like this. At Dakshin, the chicken tikka masala tastes a bit more herbed — if that’s the right word — than at other restaurants. It almost had a bit of a cinnamon taste to it, which I liked. The chicken was also prime bits of white meat. Want something a bit different? Perhaps for an appetizer? I recommend the sev batata purii, an Indian take on nachos. Dakshin also has sections of the menu dedicated to Northern Indian, Southern Indian and Indo Chinese fare. But the reason for the three stars? It got so smoky in the restaurant that it became visibly hazy, and I needed to step out for fresh air after the smoke triggered a mild asthma attack. Dakshin has a foyer area and then another door that leads to the restaurant. I wonder if it would be better to just open up the restaurant to the main, front doors. Two times during our dinner the smoke took over the restaurant. And my friend said that it was like this the last time he was there as well. Better ventilation needs to be installed if they are using a tandoori oven. It’s hard to enjoy the food when you can’t breathe. And I understand that typically after eating at an Indian restaurant, you’ll carry the smell of Indian food with you after you leave. But my boyfriend and I smelled like Indian food afterward more than we ever had before. I imagine this was due to the smoke. Even after taking a shower and dressing in clean clothes, I still carried the smell the next day. Now normally I love the smell of Indian food — just not with me when I’m driving around in my car with my boss the day afterward. Dakshin has so many great things going for it. If it could just figure out the ventilation, it would make the experience so much more enjoyable.

We came for lunch on Easter Sunday. There was a came in 5th that all the patrons were very interested in and I didn’t think much of it. We opted for the buffet. There were a bunch of dishes I had never heard of but I piled 2 plates with tastes of everything and it was delicious. The spice level was on the spicy side of medium… not enough to be miserable, but enough to make my nose run and ask for a mango lassi, which was rich, thick and delicious. As I sat to enjoy the flavors of everything in front of me, I looked up to the game on tv. It took me a minute to process… but OMG! That’s CRICKET!!! How cool is that?!? Once the game ended(India won(Yay!) over Australia by 6 wickets) they changed the channel to the Indian music video channel. For dessert, they had fruit, and some puddings. One was clearly labelled«coffee moose» and as I am not a fan of coffee, I let hubster try that and he said it was good. I had the rice pudding and one other. Everything was really good. Great find! Thanks, Unilocal

This is my favorite Indian place in Louisville. Only problem is I have to drive 45 mins to get there from S Indiana but otherwise, the food is delicious. My favorite is the lunch buffet and have gotten takeout from the lunch buffet numerous times. I was born in Madras India(now Chennai) and the dishes I have eaten here remind me of my home town especially the Chettinad dishes. Also the buffet has quite a few dishes that are not on your usual Indian buffet plus a lot of variety. Most of the dishes here are made IMHO as they would be made in a restaurant in India. They also change up their buffet selection which is good. The other places in town have most of their dishes from North India so this brings back fond memories whenever I get takeout from Dakshin. I will echo other Unilocalers here when the place itself is kind of dark and dingy but does not take away from the food. Some of my favorite dishes from Dakshin, Lamb Biriyani, Mutton Chettinad, Mutton Korma and any of the Tikka Masalas. Their indo-chinese selection is also delicious and they also make a great Masala Dosa like one would eat in a typical south indian veg restaurant. Only wish it was not as far from where I live and would make this place, my weekly go to for Indian food.

This place is pretty good, but I personally just like Taj Palace better. My mother-in-law swears this is the best Indian in Louisville though. I’ll chalk it up to different tastes. The selection here is very good, and the portions are a decent size. The ambience is kind of dark though.

Mixed feelings about this place. Not in a great location. A semi abandoned strip on bardstown at watterson trail. Wouldn’t go here on a first date at night. Mostly because my wife doesn’t let me date. Also it looks like a good place to go for a beating. I’ve only been to the lunch buffet. The food is hot and cold. I mean that some of the food on the buffet is sometimes a bit cold. I’ve never been poisoned but turning up the steamers would help. One thing I do like about the buffet is they have had a goat curry every time. I can eat a boat of goat. I am a glutton for mutton. It’s always been good and not overly gamey. They always have a couple of different interesting salads. Spicy condiments and good kheer. Costs about 10.50 for lunch buffet. Reasonable. Service is aloof.

Food is good and service was okay. The area around the place looks sketchy and the venue is not great but all in all, it was not bad. I recommend trying it once and forming your own opinion.

The best Indian restaurant in town, I can’t believe it got such low rating! Can it be that people are writing bad reviews so that they can keep this amazing place to themselves?! The restaurant is a bit far from where I live but I still come here once in awhile to get my Indian food fix. Sure the service is a little slow but it’s so worth it.

Ok so I really really loved this place been going there for years so much that they know who I am maybe but not by name but by face they just recently changed the recipe some things that I get and now it tastes awful I wish they will go back to the regular recipes because I really miss going there and I’m giving them a one star only because of that some of their food most of their food are great but the ones that I always order for years they decide to change the recipe on it if you read this and you see my picture you know who I am please go back to the original recipe so I can come back cuz I really miss you all

Dakshin is located in a rather dated and out-of-place strip mall, and is somehow even more awkward on the inside than on the outside. That notwithstanding, I enjoyed the buffet here on a recent Sunday afternoon. Everything was very flavorful, there was reasonable variety for both vegetarians and carnivores, and nothing was abnormally greasy. My only complaints are that I wish the naan and idli were brought fresh to the table rather than part of the buffet(where they became stale quickly), and that the chicken tandoori was dry and tough. Next time I come I’ll probably order off the menu, since the dosa and thalis look interesting…

The first thing I noticed walking into this restaurant was that there is an odd waiting area where no one attends to you. You have to travel past a second set of doors and seat yourself. I also noticed that there is a half full, fish tank, with yellow water next to a stand that says Tiki bar. I came here for takeout to sample their curry and it took a few awkward moments of me standing around for them to service me, and took several minutes to get my curry. Out of the 3 things that I rate a restaurant by(food, service and atmosphere) this restaurant failed 2 of the 3. While the service and downright scary atmosphere is a con, their food is by far the best Indian cuisine in the area. I definitely would eat it again, if I were brave enough to come back.

What a gem this place is. Very unsuspecting, as the exterior seriously leaves something to be desired, and the strip mall that it’s in is pretty bleak. But once you’re in the restaurant, sitting at your table, and you begin to look at the menu, you can quickly see that this place is serious. This place has one of the most extensive menus of any restaurant that I’ve ever been to. And it’s divided between North Indian, South Indian, and Vegetarian. Really neat how they broke it down like that. I went with the Chicken Madras and butter naan. My friend went with the lamb curry and garlic naan. His wife went with the chicken tikka masala. We shared. The general consensus was lamb curry was better than the chicken tikka masala which was better than the chicken madras. But, it was all fantastic. Really enjoyed my meal. And a decent price. $ 13 or so for my meal. I give it four stars instead of five because the place is a little run down, and the service was just average. But I’m not a snob. I really liked this place and will definitely be back.

I’ve been looking over my 200-or-so reviews and I haven’t written many lately. I should remedy that. Maybe one night of pen will do the trick. Living in the Buechel/Fern Creek area now has given me the opportunity to establish a new hunting ground, so to speak. But prior to that move, I had the opportunity to try out Dakshin, and with my favorite foodie partner in crime. This one, much like all our other adventures, was memorable, albeit the food was not really. We had the buffet, I remember that. There was a lot of curry, that was fine. Chick peas, yeah, they’re OK, too. Naan, yeah, you’re the forefather to those little tasteless Catholic wafers. Everything else, um, yeah sure, that oddly brightly colored meat tasted pretty good. But, at the end of the meal, I really don’t remember much about the flavors, which is the problem with buffets, they’re the hit and run of lunchtime dining, you know you had something you’re just not sure of the license plate. I do remember other details. ;-) Like smiles. And crawling on the floor looking for lost treasures. And the persistent smell of Indian spices. It stays with you, like many things.

I loved the fresh naan and goat briyani on the buffet. For just under $ 10 the lunch buffet has several tasty dishes from both northern and southern Indian influences. Another standout was a chicken dish with black-eyed peas. Start with a salad bar, which will suprise you in its spiciness.

If you like Indian, you’ll LOVE Dakshin! I first had Indian food at Shalimar – gross! I almost never wanted to try it again. I have to say, after dozens of trips to Shalimar with my family, I was OKAY with Indian food. I NEVER thought it would become #1 on my list of cuisines to eat. I was very much so mistaken. My sister took me to Dakshin and I have NEVER returned to Shalimar. The thought of other Indian Restaurants makes me sick! Dakshin is the best Indian restaurant in Louisville, and easily the best Indian restaurant in the tri-state area. Not only do they have a wide variety of foods to choose from on their menu, but they will make you any dish you want, and any way you want. Think that a dish is too spicy? Just tell your server and they will remake it to your liking. I have honestly never had a problem with the food at Dakshin being too spicy; but I have family and friends who prefer their foods made slightly different than I do, and they have always gotten something that they liked. Dakshin’s buffet is amazing. Not only do you have the option to sit and enjoy the smokey atmosphere of the restaurant with bollywood music videos blaring on each television, but you can also get your buffet to go! They give you a giant sized styrofoam to-go container and a smaller plastic container with a lid, alongside two pieces of Naan for just $ 8.99 during the week, and $ 9.99 on the weekend! This is my favorite thing to do before work. I usually get about 3 meals out of all the food when I get my buffet to go. The only con, which I feel is outweighed by the pros, is the service. The restaurant is ALWAYS so busy and they are typically short-staffed. However, I have to say I have seen a huge improvement in this aspect within the last year. Their staff has nearly tripled since I began eating at this restaurant in 2012. To anyone with tastebuds– GOTOTHISRESTAURANT! As they say at Dakshin, «Try us once and be ours forever!»
