Hair by Bennie and Friends

First off, I don’t know anything about hair products. So when I went in here asking if they sell any Paul Mitchell smoothing balm and the girl behind the counter makes me feel like an idiot by saying «No we’re a Bennie salon» and then doesn’t recommend any «Bennie» smoothing product to me… Well… I’m not ever going to want to give my money to them.
I’ll be sticking to my locally owned salon that’s just down the road ;) That doesn’t treat potential customers like crap ;)

Five stars are not nearly enough to describe my satisfaction with Hair by Bennie and Friends. While I’m no stranger to the perks of a high-​end salon, I’m pleased to say that this one exceeded my expectations. Austin was very knowledgeable, professional, and skillful from consultation to highlight/​color to cut and styling. While the average hairdresser is competent, HBB&F truly understands the salon experience. The environment is upscale without feeling pretentious, the staff are customer service centered and courteous, and the stylists are talented and very aware of your needs and specific hair goals. Generally speaking, one of my pet peeves after getting my hair done is my inability to recreate the look that I left the salon with the previous day. This is clearly something that HBB&F understands and wants to remedy. Austin was amazing at explaining and teaching me how to achieve the same results at home. I left the salon with perfect hair and the confidence that I now have the skills to achieve the same styling the next day. I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the pricing was, especially considering the attentiveness and proficiency of the staff. Overall, great salon! Definitely book an appointment with Austin — he is amazing!!!

Austin is amazing. He made getting my hair cut a great experience. Not only did I walk out looking perfect but I also got good styling tips. I for sure am sticking with this place no ands, ifs, or buts.

I liked my cut and my stylist but very very disappointed in the color. I thought I was on the books for a highlight and then when I came they said I was only on for a partial highlight. I told them I wanted everything done, base color, highlights, cut everything and that I wanted to have bright highlights. you could barely tell a difference with the color. I paid $ 230 for it and I tipped her well. I’m not sure why. When I told her I wished it was brighter she said they were in a crunch for time. I feel like I’ve been cheated.

I love this salon. They are masters with hair. They knew exactly what to do right when I came in. I didn’t have a hair style to pick from yet. I just told her a few details of what I wanted and she knew traight away away what I wanted. I came out of that salon relaxed and a new person. Please try out this salon asap.

Very disappointing. The best thing was the shampoo by Rocky. The cut and color by Michelle was all wrong. It was uneven and she hardly cut into. She literally cut layers on one side and I said «what about the other side?» Oh oopsy!!! The color was all wrong, I told her rich warm brown, and pls no black. What did I get? Raven black hair. There are no words. Waste of money as I had to go get another haircut and wait for color to fade.

I just wanted to update and say that the 50% off brought me in, but Brittany brought me back time and again. I’ve been going faithfully since my first visit and have never been disappointed! For someone who loves their hair as much as I do, I’m more than willing to pay the full price now that I know what a good hairdresser actually does for a person.

Heard nothing but great things about this salon after moving to Louisville. At a conference I got a half off coupon for a haircut & style which made me have to go check this place out. I’ve gone twice now and I’ve been more than happy about my choice to make this my salon. Katie is my stylist and she is amazing. They really try to make your experience great.

I could not be any more impressed with this place. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Karyssa did an AMAZING job turning my long hair into an adorable pixie cut. She struck the perfect balance between listening to what I wanted and offering her professional advice, and the whole process was very non-​stressful. She really took the time to make sure I was happy with the result. I will come back here for sure!

Selected Bennie and Friends based on Unilocal reviews. Got my hair cut and colored by Katie – she did an amazing job! It was the first time I left a salon and didn’t want to scream. The salon is super nice and modern. My only complaint is pricing. I was really thrown off by the total, after pricing it myself using the website.

It took me a long time to find a place to get my hair done by someone that really listen to what I want and would show me how to maintain the style. Michelle really loves what she does and takes the time to make sure you feel comfortable w your hair. They also have a great line of products that the stylist will take the time to show you how they work and what you should use for your hair.

I finally had my first visit here Saturday. Even the day after a head on collision, there was no way I was going to miss my much anticipated hair appointment. Erin is who I decided to see and I was so pleased. I met her at a Unilocal Elite event. She was very informative and helpful. I love that she gave me her opinion on everything rather than just doing what I wanted. I took her advice and I’m very satisfied with the end result.

I went here for the Unilocal Elite event and this wonderful salon was nice enough to offer us half off any salon experiences if we booked them that night. I jumped on the offer and got to come back to see Brittany.
When I got to the salon, they made sure I had a drink (water) and asked if I needed another tour of the salon. You get these awesome cover ups that tie around so you don’t get hair all over yourself.
Brittany took me to her chair and we went over what I was thinking about doing, and then discussed what she thought would go best with my hair.
She went and mixed my dye while I got acquainted with the dye room — it’s a massive room with a super long table, very trendy.
I did get to go to the awesome shampoo room after that — the lights are all dim and it’s so relaxing. Then it was on to the hair cut. Brittany did an amazing job! And I love that they explain how to do that style at home so you can get the same look.
I had let Brittany know that I was going out that night, so she suggested a free make up touch up! The lady did a fabulous cat eye liner and I was so thankful that they did that! Will for sure be back to this place :)

I went here with a bridal party of eight for our wedding day hair. By wedding time everyone had to redo their hair. I was not impressed with the service for the cost and my head got burned twice! For 75 bucks I want to walk out looking beautiful. Instead I walked out with a sad bride, flat MOH hair, and disappointed I was out 75. I had to go back to the hotel to fix hair and comfort a bride who felt ugly. I’m super surprised with this experience because this place usually knocks it out the park on a one person hair cut basis. Not sure I’ll go back after this experience. Failure is not am option on a wedding day.

I never thought I could find a non-​Asian salon in the US, especially in Louisville, which could cut my hair right until I discovered Hair by Bennie and Friends! I lost hope when I moved to the here in 2009; I’ve gone to 2 different salons, and none of them can style it the way I wanted it. After that, I just patiently waited to get my hair done when I went back home to the Philippines and another when I went to Vegas.
Brittany Griffith is my stylist at this salon and she is AAAAHHHHMAAAAAZING!!! Not only that she’s pretty but she will also make you look your best! She’s very accommodating, friendly, and will listen very well to your requests. During my first time at the salon, I asked for a major makeover– from digitally permed hair that goes all the way down to my lower back to a simple straight shoulder length bob. Brittany did an absolutely awesome job! She’s one of those stylists who you can surely, fully trust your crowning glory with.
Another wonderful thing about this salon is that the stylists will teach you how to style your hair on your own. Us ladies know how painful it is to come out of the salon looking like an all made up Hollywood star only to look like the personal assistant the next day, after washing and drying your hair! They don’t only teach you there, but they will also give you a print out with a step by step guide on how to do it, to make sure you don’t forget! ;)
Hair by Bennie and Friends has a very appealing interior. It’s modern and chic, so you don’t just sit there tortured by how boring the place is while getting your hair done. It’s also spacious; 3 shotgun houses make up the whole place.
Just take note that if you want to book a particular stylist on a particular day, do it a month or two in advance because their schedules can get fully booked pretty quickly.

I had been searching for a salon to call my own for many months after my previous stylist moved away, and now that I’ve found Bennie I won’t go anywhere else.
And if this wasn’t because of my haircuts, it’s because of the overall customer service and products that only Bennie sells.
Specifically:
– Atmosphere: It’s clean, crisp and modern. And I love how it is laid out with ample room given to styling, dying, washing, make-​up and products.
– Service: As I said I’ve loved my hair as done by Erin, my stylist. Her dos cost $ 40 and come with a wash, styling and scalp massage. (The massage almost seems worth the price in and of itself.) Some other stylists there charge more. The gals at the front desk are similarly friendly and helpful.
– Products: I have straight fine hair that scoffs at curling irons. No matter what, styling won’t stay. But with some of Bennie’s products, I’ve had some luck.
Also, Bennie and Friends hosts free parties for ladies where they will show you how to do your hair. I hope to take them up on this in the future.
So overall I feel well taken care of at Bennie’s and feel great whenever I leave there with a new haircut.

I am always very imtimidated when I move to a new location and have to find a new hair stylist. I have had some phenominal ones in my life and have high expectations.
I made an appt very easily with Hair by Bennie (HB), they told me my stylist would be Erin.
I arrived a few minutes early, I was welcomed as soon as I walked in the door and loved the vibe. I was seated and Erin came out a few minutes later (3 Min) and showed me the entire salon-​it is 3 houses all pieced together. She took the time to explain how everything would go and what room we would start in etc.
She was not snooty like most hair dressers-​yes most of you are for some reason. I brought a magazine to show her some colors I wanted. She sat down with me for a good 15 minutes and we dicussed colors, pro’s/con’s. The shape my hair was in and what I wanted. She really did a fantastic job making me feel welcomed and secure in my choice.
The whole atmosphere was very relaxing-​when they go to wash your color out you sit in a darkened room with comfty chairs and get the best scalp massage-​seriously where did they teach them because I need to send Jason to learn.
After being washed we went to her station and she explained everything she was doing to my hair. She kept up a good conversation and again was not catty or snooty at all like most stylists I come across. All the stylists explain to what they are using on your hair, why they are, what it is and how to get your hair to style when you go home and try to mimic how good your hair looked when you left!
I have another appt and I plan on making this my home salon for the next few years while I am here.
It is pricey-​but if you are like me and will pay for quality-it’s worth it.
I have started using some of the hair by bennie products, I love them!!! He has created all his own styling products and they work fantastically. I am normally suspicious of products the stylists try to get you to buy! Well worth the money here, if it ends up not working you can return it anytime.

This salon has a great atmosphere. I love that they bring you a coke in a nice glass while your highlights/​color is setting. The chairs you sit in getting your hair shampooed are so cozy and you even get a scalp massage. It’s just that you pay for it. Don’t get me wrong, I have been to expensive salons where I thought it was a bit over the top on pricing, but I walked out going, oh my god, my hair has never looked this amazing. Ever. Here I walked out going, that was a nice, relaxing afternoon and my hair looks pretty good. The products that the hairdresser suggested were mediocre. The conditioner worked well, but the shampoo was terrible for my hair type, getting oily before the day was even over. At 4 times the price of Herbal Essences, it wasn’t good value. I did love the conditioner and the cut itself, but the color and other products just didn’t live up for me.
I can see why people rave about the experience, just not quite what I was looking for.

Bennie and Friends represents yet another reason to move back to Louisville for me– a fabulous haircut and a stylist who really knows what she is doing with my hair. Upon a suggestion from a good friend, I made an appointment with Michelle when I was home for Thanksgiving. I wanted to cut my hair shorter for a few reasons– 1) so my young child will no longer pull at it and 2) so that I can eventually grow this brassy color out.
First of all, I think Bennie and Friends is in a very neat location on Frankfurt Ave. It’s in a hip part of town across from some unique restaurants like El Mundo and Sari Sari. I love how Bennie (and his «friends» in architecture and construction) converted three shotgun houses into a beautiful, modern salon. After a late start (my only complaint), Michelle gave me a tour and I was impressed.
Once we had our tour since I was a new client, she consulted with me about my hair (much more than most stylists ever had). This is a bit cliché, but I really wanted a Carey Mulligan kind of cut. She’s a British actress who I adore and she has a longish pixie cut. Michelle had lots of ideas and I just let her go with it.
The shampoo and the cut and style themselves were wonderful. Michelle took a lot of time molding my hair into a great new shape. She also wanted to give me styling tips so I could replicate the look at home. I felt bad because I sort of rushed her; my mom was babysitting my son in the salon and had to be somewhere. They won’t be coming next time.
Once the haircut was over and the look revealed, I looked and felt great. This doesn’t normally happen after a haircut. Usually, I run home and try to brush my hair out to remove the styling product or so forth. But today, I didn’t want to change a thing.
The cost was only $ 36 (originally $ 40, with a 15% discount because I was new) and I feel like I got way more out of the haircut than that. Honestly, I can say this was one of the best haircuts that I’ve ever received. Just wished either she and I lived in the same place so I could come back every six-​eight weeks.

Somehow no one has reviewed this amazing place on Unilocal.It is all over Google maps under reviews if you want more glowing reviews other than mine. Bennies, located on Frankfort Ave in Crescent Hills, is a top-​notch salon with wonderful stylists.
For your first visit, you walk in and — upon checking in — are greeted by your stylist. She then gives you a full tour of the salon and explains their various services. She then takes you to her station where you discuss your hair and style desires. After this, she makes recommendations for what she will do for you in that appointment. After this the wash, color, cut etc begins. After the hair cut/​color is done, she then styles, and shows you how to style your hair, making sure you will know how to do it yourself when you get home.
After your appointment you will have the chance to buy whatever products used on you. Of course it is very expensive, but it is Bennie’s unique label that is distributed across the country. You don’t have to buy though of course.
They also do make-​up, special occasion styles, haircuts for men, and facial waxing.
Oh and if you care, Bennie has one numerous hair awards for North America, the «Oscars of hair styling.» Pretty cool for Louisville!
