Market Street Barbers was brought to the NULU area by Roy Jay White, a fourth generation barber who was Best known for his skills and talent while owning a shop located on Louisvilles UofL campus. In 2011 he decided to bring the Meta Modern Barbering Experience to Louisvilles hottest up and coming NULU district. Now Market St. Barbers is known throughout the Louisville and surrounding areas for their cutting edge style, superb costumer service, unique environment and extremely talented barbers. And the rest as they say, is history.

Business Owner

Roy Jay. White is a fourth generation barbers who developed his craft at an early age.

Roy has been a part of Louisville’s barbering community for more than a decade.

He first brought his skills in barbering and hairdressing to UofL’s campus where he owned and operated his first shop for 7 years before breaking ground at Market St. Barbers in Louisville’s most sought after NULU district in 2011.

Roy has been a platform artist for national and international haircare product lines and performs haircutting and business class for barber shops and salons across the country.

He is a firm believer that you can never stop learning and strives to keep current, all the while maintaining the Classic art of barbering. Roy knows that a great haircut is about more than just the technique itself, it’s also about the experience that the client receives.

I wanted to give Market St. Barbers a better grade. Yes, it’s VERY self-​consciously hip, but it’s basically just a cute little store that tries too hard — not a big sin in my book. The barbers clearly like being there, and they’re friendly enough.
But…
I called ahead to make an appointment, showed up on time, and still waited 25 minutes for my turn. The whole purpose of making an appointment is to avoid just that. 5 minutes? Fine. 25? Not okay.
And, the cut wasn’t all that great. My barber’s name began with a J — I’ll call him «Jabby», because that what he did to my head with his clippers. He made me really appreciate my barber at home, who is much, much smoother. I walked out of this place sore. Not good. Jabby sort of did what I asked him to, but didn’t have a great eye for detail, like matching the amount of space around my ears, etc. I was afraid to ask him to trim my brows lest I lose an eye.
Finally, as others have said, there’s no price listed for a haircut. So really, it’s a surprise at the end — and who doesn’t love that?
I’m sure there are way better options in town.

I don’t think you can find another set of Barbers who are great at their job and love what they do. My son goes to get his look freshened up every month and without fail, looks like a stud muffin everything. I am so impressed at all they can do with clippers. The staff is so friendly and patient with him.
I can forget to mention how cool and trend it is too.

Not a fan. Yes it’s got a cool vibe where you can hang out… and drink beer in the summer in the backyard. But it’s a barber shop and the haircut matters most. Mine was quite bad. My hair is on the dry side and it takes just a tiny bit of experience to know how to deal w it, basically wet it a bit then cut it using trimmers or scissors but make it even. Mine ended up uneven (clear by one side sticking out much longer, which I’m not sure how she didn’t see), and without any texture. It really didn’t have any decent shape at all. Sorry to blast this place but I’ve gotten better cuts at Supercuts. I’m used to $ 25 haircuts in nyc, but the quality level of experience is significantly different, and the cool trendy vibe here doesn’t make my hair look good. Will try it again with a different barber and repost if feel different.

Good hair is of the utmost importance to me… what can I say? I love this place. Everyone is highly skilled, love what they do and it comes across in their product. The location is in NuLu which is a little hipster, but don’t let that keep you away if it’s not your style… they do conservatives and hipsters alike… Cowboys and urban artsy. Once you come you will be hooked for life.

The haircuts are great, cool atmosphere, the staff is personable. It’s best to have an appointment in my experience. Basic hair cut is $ 25, so the photo is old. Reception can sometimes be on the phone (with clients) for a while… It’s best just to sit and wait instead of standing for 5 minutes.

This place is super legit, the décor is rustic and original. Everyone is friendly and sincere. Had the pleasure of getting my cut from Anne, who was engaging, easy going, and just a wonderful person. There is plenty of parking on the side, which is probably my number one influential factor. Last, certainly not least, the music was awesome and I never once heard anything even closely resembling jazz. I’m hooked.

Nulu hipsters just love throwin’ 10s & 20’s at this place. Overpriced haircuts ($ 25) & the barbers rarely keep up with the appointment schedule. I gave up and started going to Props on Frankfort Avenue.

I was a walk in today and it was by far the best experience I have had in quite sometime. The atmosphere was great and the service was awesome. China gave me a great hair cut and style. She was very informative and I will be going back in 3 – 4 weeks with an appointment. I’m glad I have found a place in the downtown area like MSB. Great team and I look forward to future hair cuts there. Thanks!

I got a phenomenal haircut here. Let me start with that. Unequivocally one of the best haircuts I’ve ever received, and Jill was incredibly sweet and definitely knew what she was doing. I also like that you can buy a beer next door and bring it in to sip on if you’re waiting, and it’s a really cool space with a great vibe.
Here’s the thing. Their website’s prices are NOT EVEN CLOSE to accurate. Haircuts START at $ 35, not $ 20. When I called to try and resolve the situation, I was told this is apparently an effect of switching ownership and waiting for the website to catch up on the actual pricing. There is no board anywhere indicating the price difference (actually, there’s no indication of how much each service costs ANYWHERE). Getting charged nearly twice as much for my haircut on the way out is a HUGE oversight, especially considering money’s a bit tight for me right now.
I don’t know if I’ll be back there; the way this all shook out seriously left a bad taste in my mouth. But if $ 35 for a great haircut doesn’t seem steep to you, I would say check it out.

After spending most of my life getting haircuts for $ 10 or less, I decided it was time to give someone else a try and spend a few more bucks. I decided to give Market Street Barbers a try and it turned out to be a great decision. I have received more compliments on my haircut since my three haircuts by China at MSB than ever before. She has done a great job not only cutting my hair but giving me tips to make it look exactly how I want it every day. MSB is well worth the trip down to NULU.

Went in at 12:30 on a Friday. Took me as a walk-​in, gave a great haircut, charged me $ 5 more than the listed price for a haircut on their website…$ 25 vs $ 20.
It’s hipster-​laden and has motorcycle décor by the gobs. Easy to find, easy parking and nice folks.
Only reason I gave them a 4 instead of 5 is sticking me for an extra $ 5.

Just visiting from Nashville for the Middle America Truck Show and was looking for a place near the Galt Hotel and the closest place was walk in only. F that. Glad I went where I did.
China, not the toy making, super secretive country that hates us, the barber, was very nice, informative, and helped me become really, really, really ridiculously good looking. If my eugugoly has a picture of me, I hope it’s one fresh from seeing China. I’ll still probably have a grin on my face from the head massage/​shampoo, too.

A barber shop located in the Nulu district of Louisville, Ky. A clean and hip atmosphere. Large barber shop with lots of chairs and I’ve never seen people wait to long to get their haircut. They do men’s and women’s cut. Worth checking out and then you can grab a beer next store at the Beer Store or food at any of the great restaurants in Nulu. My fiancé is an amazing barber there so stop in and say hi to China and the other barbers there!

Had my first experience with MSB today and I must say… I was pleasantly surprised! I wanted to see what this place was about. Is this barber shop just all looks or could the substance deliver?
Haircuts now start at $ 25, not $ 20, comes with a shampoo and wash.
Went in there without an appointment and a tattooed gentlemen with grungy hair welcomed me in. Found him to be very sociable and easy going. Big plus in my book. I got sat with stylist/​barber named Sarah. For $ 25, she did a FANTASTIC job. Listened to how I liked my hair done and did it right. She took her time cutting, almost obsessively combing over my hair for creases in the blend.
Long story short, with strong branding, good prices and talented barbers; this place is my go-​to for cuts.

I have had my hair cut here a couple of times since moving to Louisville. Sporting an old-​school slicked back look, I’m used to waiting a little longer and paying a little more for my scissor-​intensive haircuts. However, this place isn’t that expensive by city standards and they do a great job.

Old school barbershop for a guy that wants a modern cut. I spotted the shop and was telling my wife how cool the shopped looked. It was 8pm and a woman on the corner said, let me give you a tour! Lindsay had just left work but opened the shop back up to give me the grand tour and one of the best hair cuts I’ve ever had. Highly recommended.

Their website says they’re open until 8:00. That is misleading. Although there was only one customer (and several employees in the shop), they refused to serve me at 7:00 pm. Said, «our last walk-​in appointment is at 6:30.» Their website does not specify that. I am not a happy camper, and will not ever be a customer.

I always have anxiety about getting my hair cut. Most places cut my hair how they think I «meant» for it to look. Typically the word pixie could be part of the final result description.
I had no issue here. David could tell from looking at my hair how long it had been since my last haircut and he did something amazing. He gave me a better haircut than my stylist of 2 years has.
