This super mercado on Preston is loaded with everything you need to prepare some great Latin dishes. They have about six or eight different dried chilies sold in bulk. They also have a great produce section. Plantains, banana leaves, coconuts and quite a few things I don’t recognize. It’s fun to buy some of these things and then figure out what to do with them. They have a very good size meat counter. Some pre seasoned meats and some cooked ready to go. Salsas and pickled peppers to go along with your selections. Loads of canned goods and cheeses to fill your pantry. There is also a taqueria in the front. Practice your Spanish. It will be well worth it.

This is a gorgeous Mexican supermarket. It is huge, with lots of Mexican items, one of the biggest butcher shops I have seen, and a comprehensive produce department. Everything is priced very reasonably, cheaper than either of the other Mexican markets I have visited in Louisville. There is too much here to take in on only one visit, and I plan to return frequently. The butcher shop has quite a few ready-to-cook, pre-marinated meat items, and I definitely want to try a few of those. The supermarket also offers still-hot, freshly cooked tortillas. I plan to buy some on my next trip. The staff at this store were very friendly. I am always treated quite well at Mexican markets. Part of this might be the novelty of my speaking Spanish. I’m not great, but I try. It also could be that Latino culture is very hospitable. The supermarket occupies a huge space, and could hold a lot more merchandise. I am looking forward to seeing how Supermercado Guanajuato progresses from here.
