History
Established in 2002.
Tropical Bamboo Nursery & Gardens evolved out of a passion for unusual plants. Robert Saporito (the nursery’s founder) worked with helicopters in tropical areas of the world. As a gardening enthusiast, he was impressed with bamboos — especially the giant timber bamboos. In the late 1980s, he found the American Bamboo Society.
By the mid-1990s, the Florida Chapter of the ABS was importing many new tropical bamboo species and Robert created a website — www.tropicalbamboo.org. This website was purely educational but inadvertently also exposed these new imports to commercial landscape companies, landscape architects, theme parks, zoos, etc., plus many plant collectors and gardeners.
Initially, an attempt was made to propagate and sell plants as a part-time, backyard grower. In 2002, the nursery was created and has expanded to 9 acres. It has grown to include public display gardens with several bamboo structures.
