Feeding and housing travelers for over 90 years. Simple and delicious home cooking with friendly service is the hallmark of Brookside Restaurant. Our luxurious cabins have been remodeled from the previous historic tourist cabins. Backing onto the brook, cabins provide updated amenities in a peaceful setting. Some cabins boast gas fireplaces and interior hot tubs. Many guests return year after year and have become extended family.

History

Established in 1925.

The current owners have operated Brookside for a quarter century and are responsible for updating the cabins. The business started as a roadside tourist cabin business prior to the 1920’s. The restaurant evolved from a seasonal barbecue stand into a full service family restaurant at the time Shendandoah National Park was established in the 1930’s. Many generations of families have visited and enjoyed Brookside.

Driving around the countryside on a mini-road trip from DC and craving breakfast, we came across this neat diner with great people, food, and a bit of an interesting past (ask about hurricane Fran).
Becky was amazing and made sure we got what we needed. She also made sure our five year old had a great experience. We will stop over every time we are in the area!

We ate here for breakfast three times and dinner once. Breakfast was good diner quality. The pancakes and waffles are great as are the breakfast english muffin sandwiches. I’d skip the ham (a bit watery) and opt for the delicious bacon. The hot chocolate is excellent. We never tried the buffet but there was one available each time we went. Seemed to be a mix of breakfast and lunch options.
Dinner was eh. My crab cakes seemed off but the chicken parm was edible and very largely portioned so we were able to share.
Dessert — the peanut butter pie is definitely something to order. That was the upside of not enjoying our entrees.
Service is friendly. It got a bit slow on the weekends but understandably so given how packed it was.

Hearty country comfort food with a smile. Not fancy, maybe a bit kitschy, but sometimes you want good authentic home style cooking that’s not an interstate chain restaurant approximation.
Started with the house salad which was nothing special, but huge with homemade blue cheese dressing for only $ 2.50. I tried the hot turkey sandwich and couldn’t have been happier with it. Clearly roasted «in-house» turkey (i.e. not deli meat) moist turkey sitting on fresh baked sourdough toast and covered in gravy as was the mashed potatoes. Finished my meal with fresh made cherry pie with a buttery flakey crust topped with whipped cream. After finishing a respectable Reuben with fries, my wife — a peanut butter pie aficionado — absolutely loved her dessert as well.
Brookside Restaurant embodies everything about homey country cooking that is unpretentious and just good. I’ll find more excuses to wander down this way in the future.

Interesting place to eat. There were seven of us, and we had a number of meals to share. I had the steak, and it was extremely chewy with just ok flavor. The clam strips were old. After all was done, one person was tossing their food, and everyone else wishing we had gone hungry. Not going to happen again.

After visiting Luray Caverns, we wanted a snack before heading home and stumbled upon Brookside Restaurant. Brookside Restaurant has a homey /southern /road trip style feeling to it. If you want a homecooked meal, Brookside Restaurant is the place to be. Everyone wanted pie except me. I ordered a house salad with honey mustard dressing. The salad consisted of fresh spring mix, cucumber, carrot, tomato, and cheddar cheese. The dressing consisted of creamy honey mustard dressing. We ordered the following pies: Coconut Cream Pie, Apple Pie, and Cherry Pie. The fruit pies were served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Surprisingly, my favorite pie was Cherry Pie!

First time for lunch. Food was excellent. You could tell it was made from scratch. Husband’s fish was perfect. Awesome coleslaw. Heard about their dinner buffet so went back that night. Not a whole lot but enough to fill you up. Barbecue chicken fell off the bone. Had real hamburger patties in gravy and mushroom, not some mystery meat patty most places have. Nice salad bar. Had homemade desserts. The coconut cake looked awesome.
Staff very nice and attentive. I love the morning staff especially. One of the cooks was actually a close neighbor. This will be our new favorite place since there is not a whole lot in Luray.

We came in hungry and came out satisfied with full bellies. Good country food. Affordable too. They have $ 11 buffet with a bunch off goodies. Plus if you wanna get fancy you can get a broiled flounder and other home style dishes. I love this place. If i was a local id be coming here daily

This is a lovely place. Just a stones throw from Skyline Drive and the AT, it is the picture perfect country diner. The food is terrific and the staff wonderful. The Peanut Butter pie is not to be missed.

Good food at reasonable prices, nothing fancy or trendy friendly service and a good place to take children. Our group of 7 ranging from 2 to 68 found a nice dinner spot on a Saturday evening. The place is dated in décor but clean and neat. The buffet offered salad bar, good fried chicken and shrimp, okay beef with onion, peppers and gravy, rice, peas etc. We also had chicken tenders, a hamburger and a club sandwich… all good food, not gourmet but tasty. The service was prompt which helps with small children. The selection of pies for dessert were several and we tried the chocolate cream and the coconut cream and both were good!

Brookside is a very family oriented restaurant. You will feel very welcomed and you get in. There menu does not have a lot of options to choose from but they have a very tasty food. they have a buffet option for $ 11 something and its all you can eat salad main dish and dessert, it was pretty reasonable as price and food wise. Costumer service is excellent. Overall we enjoyed out quick stop for dinner and would definitely go back in the future. Don’t miss the lemon meringue pie and the chocolate fudge pie :)

Steakburger was tasty with grilled onion and fresh tomatoes/lettuce. Served on a thick cut of Texas style toast, the sandwich was topped off with a savory steak sauce and delicious steak filling. Service was top notch and our waitress was ultra attentive and welcoming. Delicious sweet tea — not too watered down and not over sweet — just perfect! (overheard the waitress say she made it in batches herself!). Menu prices were very reasonable. The décor was very down-home. The outside looks simple and blended with the character of the area. Inside, the restaurant was very clean and had a welcoming atmosphere. Tucked off the beaten path, this is the kind of home-style country cookin’ place you look for after traveling through Shenandoah National Park.

Ok, here’s the scoop. I was here for breakfast. They have a menu and a «buffet». They use different foods for each. I got the buffet, wife purchased French toast meal.
My plate (buffet) consisted of bacon, sausage, eggs and French toast. Eggs were powdered, bacon was extremely salty (inedible) and French toast (sticks) was from Murray’s .The sausage was frozen but was edible. A$ 10 meal which was all from a store. Probably cost $ 4 for what I could eat.
Wife’s plate consisted of homemade French toast, and thick cut bacon. The bacon tasted good along with the French toast. We asked for maple syrup and receive Aunt Jemima.
Coffee was good, orange juice was from concentrated.
This is a diner. Everything offered should be fresh and homemade. Look where the location is! If I wanted store bought taste I would have went to Mcdonalds.
Do not get the buffet !!! Order from the menu, and good luck !!

Go elsewhere for dinner. Very little to choose from on the «buffet» so don’t stop in here expecting something good.
The night we ate there they had Stuffed Peppers, Baked Chicken, Fish Cakes as the main courses to choose from… It really wasn’t worth what we got charged, and I would recommend for people to take the short drive into town and grab something there, instead of eating at this place for dinner. If you are forced to eat here, DO NOT eat off of the Buffet line.

Food is decent, service was excruciatingly slow, but very kind. Our server basically told us to get breakfast buffet this morning because the kitchen was backed up, then didn’t come back to see us until we flagged down another server to get our check. If you’re not in a hurry this probably wouldn’t bother you though. Seriously she was so nice I felt bad for being annoyed.

Stopped here for dinner after hiking in Shenandoah. It’s a cute little place on the side of 211. I got the salsa burger and my boyfriend got the Reuben. The salsa burger was really good and my boyfriend really liked his Reuben. Both came with fries which is pretty standard. The pricing was pretty good as well, with both of our meals costing less than $ 10.
Note: We carried out our dinner so can’t comment on service really besides the ordering. The staff seemed friendly enough and we didn’t have to wait long.

Quaint, country kitchen type place. Menu you’d expect, though there was a fair amount of seafood. I got fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and southern style green beans, and all were hot and quite tasty, and the in-house baked bread was so good we bought a loaf to take home. Service was quick and friendly.
Breakfast the next morning was equally as good. If you’re in the area, it’s well worth a stop.

Stopped here while riding down Skyline Drive and was pleasantly surprised. I had the sliced mesquite pork sandwich and it was good, as were the fries. They had a lunch buffet which looked OK, but it was full of only heavy items. I’d stop here again when I ride through the area, and the staff was very friendly. On a side note, the sweet iced tea was excellent.

Great home cooking style restaurant right outside the Luray gate to Shenandoah National Park. This place has a lot of character, and great food as well.
For $ 7.95 they serve a lunch buffet that’s filled with delicious items such as meatloaf, chicken, potatoes, and other home cooking specialties. Overall we really enjoyed our meal as well as the atmosphere. They also offer really nice cabin rentals next to a bubbling brook next door, and a gift shop. Great place to stop after traveling sky line drive!
–Don’t forget to check the back parking lot and look for the pet peacock!
