History
Established in 1818.
Boston-based Eastern Bank is the largest and oldest mutual bank in the United States. We serve consumers and businesses in eastern Massachusetts and southern and coastal New Hampshire.
From the very beginning, Eastern Bank’s mission has been to provide much needed help to our communities. We were founded in Salem, Massachusetts to serve people of «modest means» who did not have access to the banking system.
At that time, our country did not yet have a national banking system and the large banks that did exist generally served the needs of the very wealthy. Eastern Bank — or Salem Savings Bank, as it was then called — was established to give the rest of the city’s residents a safe place to put their money.
Today, we’ve evolved from a modest savings bank to a full-service commercial bank with the size, stability, technology and knowledge to deliver custom-tailored financial solutions in a convenient way.
