History
Established in 2010.
Perennial expert Mimi Elmore has been helping homeowners and gardeners select the appropriate plants for their gardens for over 15 years throughout Boulder County. Many customers will remember her from the botanical department at McGuckin Hardware in Boulder and Gwynne’s Greenhouse in Lyons. In 2010, she decided to strike out on her own with Wild by Design. She recognized a specific need to move beyond the cookie cutter approach to home landscaping to more natural native approach to gardening that supports our native birds, bees and butterflies. Meet the Business Owner
Mimi E.
Business Owner
Wildlife garden designer and perennial plant expert Mimi Elmore is more than just a gardener. She’s an internationally recognized painter, too. In 2009 and again in 2011, she has been selected by the jury to exhibit her botanical paintings at the Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. If you’re interested, you can see some of her paintings on our website.
But most of the time during spring, summer and fall, you’ll find Mimi in her garden or helping others with their gardens. Wild by Design is the result of her tremendous success in converting her xeric garden into a wildlife habitat, the ground breaking research of professor Douglas W. Tallamy, the author of Bringing Nature Home, and Mimi’s dedication to the emerging field of reconciliation ecology. The WbD sustainable organic demonstration garden in Lyons is home to birds, bees, butterflies and a host of other beneficial wildlife.
