Description

Specialties

We specialize in new and used books. One of the largest independent bookstores in the country, we started out in 1975 as a feminist bookstore, later merging with Avol’s Used Books to become Madison’s premier indie bookstore. We are a great stop for fiction, children’s and young adult books, women’s studies and LGBT books, science fiction, comics, greeting cards, history, spirituality, and much much more.

History

Established in 1975.

A Room of One’s Own started out as a feminist bookstore in 1975, and has been a cultural touchstone for Madison’s feminist and LGBT/queer communities for decades. In 2012 we moved a block away from our former location, into the beautiful bookstore space that once housed Canterbury Books. We consider ourselves a generalist bookstore now, with something for everyone, but women’s interests, feminism, focus on grassroots community, anti-racism, and LGBT issues continue to be at the forefront of our business’s concerns.
