Beneath the Surface

I love Beneath the Surface Spa. I have been going here for a couple of years and usually ask for Marcia who is wonderful and friendly. But I have had my friends go here and use other attendents and they have always been happy. They offer many different facial and massage treatments and many specials too. This spa is a relaxing, clean and serene way to pass an hour. It always goes way too fast.

The staff was welcoming and friendly including the owner. It was so relaxing and pieceful I hardly wanted to leave. It’s a great gift to yourself or a loved one, friend, coworker, anyone that loves some pampering really. I was with Melissa Torres and from beginning to end I felt comfortable, relaxed, and I’ll definitely be going back.

Easy to schedule appointments online. Marcia has amazing hands!!! Love that it’s not «super fancy» where I feel out of place. Just a small, tranquil environment that feels welcoming. I’ve been at least 5 times and each time Marcia is consistently friendly and gives a great massage. Had the staff give chair massages to the teachers at my son’s school and all the teachers raved about it.

I had such a great experience here! First time coming in for a massage and this place set the bar high. The deep tissue massage I had with Marcia was amazing — can’t believe how quickly an hour flew by. I left feeling relaxed and refreshed :)
Props to Beneath the Surface for the full package! Located in the heart of Madison, it’s incredibly convenient and has ample (and free!!) street parking. Loved the earth tones décor and soothing music in the massage room and most of all the cleanliness. I came here with a Groupon and was impressed by the quality, and will be back again for sure!
Heads up students, Marcia mentioned a discounted student menu in the works so keep an eye out for that.

I used a Groupon fro both a facial and 60 minute deep tissue massage with a foot mask. They were both the worst I have ever had. Was not even worth the amount I paid for the groupon! The time for each service was cute short, which was the least of the problem. I really wondered if they knew what they were doing, and doubted their training and license. I have used Groupons many times in the past to try new places and have always been more than satisfied. This was not the case with Beneath the Surface. The spa is small, which is fine, but was poorly maintained. The staff was nice enough, although I was left waiting in the treatment room as they engaged in a personal conversation complaining. Not the relaxing experience I expected. I will never go back and do not recommend.

Wasn’t even able to get the services I booked two days in advance. I was called the morning of my appointment (Friday)and asked to move from 1 pm to 4. Fine, not a big deal. Then was called and told my appointment was cancelled because the therapist was overbooked and I would have to be moved to Sunday. Unacceptable. Running an appointment –based business requires adherence to your schedule and calendar; I know as I run one myself. Not a good first impression

My roommate and I decided to do a spa day here, so we bought a 2 hour massage Groupon. The massages were supposed to be: an hour Swedish, a half hour foot reflexology, and a half hour scalp. Did not happen. The woman massaging me was very nice. So nice to the point that I feel bad about writing this mediocre review. But, unfortunately, nice doesn’t make the massage any better. So when we first came in, they had us fill out some forms which indicated our pains, placed to focis on, etc. I stated that my entire neck and back were the problem. Skip to the massage: she started with my head. Fine, I figure they have a routine and that it begins with the scalp massage and goes down like somewhat of a head to toe thing. Nope.
She massages my head for a while and only touches my scalp twice and then moves on to my feet. Ok. She basically spends the next hour rubbing my feet. But not in a good way but more in a: I have to touch your feet for a predetermined amoubt of time so I will sort of way. My boyfriend gives better feeling foot massages. Anyway, in between she rubs my arms and legs before she finally moves on to my back and neck (which I stated on the forms she should concentrate on). She massages my back for what seems like the shortest time out of all my parts, comments on how bad my knots are (doesn’t get them out) and then says namaste as to indicate that she’s done.
Now, if I knew it’d only be 30 minutes of back time and an hour and a half of other BS, I’m not sure I would’ve come in the first place. I tipped her a 20 because of how nice she was, but I’m never going back there because of how awful that massage was. And it’s not just me cause my roommate was less than thrilled with how her massage went, too.

I’ve had two facials from this spa. Excellent! Highly recommend!

I hired Beneath the Surface Spa to do my makeup for my wedding and Marcia’s work was absolutely perfect! I’ve had my makeup done professionally as a bridesmaid, but Marcia’s work was above and beyond all my previous experiences!
Marcia arrived promptly at the site of the wedding (where I was also getting ready) and did my makeup as well as my bridesmaid with both timeliness and sharp attention to detail. Marcia captured the fresh, dewy and luminescent look that I wanted as a bride as well the classic film star glamour preferred by my bridesmaid.
The makeup didn’t cause dryness or irritation and lasted through out the day and even the after party! In fact, when I woke up for the farewell breakfast after falling asleep with the make up still on, it still looked perfect!

Recently had an hour long swedish massage with Liz. Great experience overall. The spa is clean and professional. I came in with knots in my neck and upper back and left my session feeling wonderful and knot free !! I am excited to try more treatments here and will be returning for future massages.

I had a facial there a while ago using a Groupon. I’ve had many, many facials before, and this was mediocre. The one thing that surprised me was that there was no sink, no running water, in the room, so there was never fresh water in the room.

I purchase a deep tissue massage from Groupon and the massage was LIGHT tissue massage from the owner. I have gotten massages for 10 years and rating this from 1 – 10, I would have to give it a 3. There was no intense pressure with this massage. I would never pay full price or even consider going back.

I was given the groupon for a 1 hour deep tissue massage and foot reflexology treatment as a Christmas gift.
My sister called to schedule appointments for the two of us. While making the appointments was a little wacky (she was told we just had to make our appointments by the expiration date, not receive the service by then?), our appointments were accepted with no problem.
The massage was one of the best I had ever received. I believe it was given by Lisa and she did an excellent job. Just the right amount of pressure and hitting all the right points. Would absolutely recommend.

The place is not very fancy, but average. I got there facial twice. It was good.
I do not like the receptionist there. It is hard to get somebody answering the phone and also not nice experience to book at appointment. I used groopon twice, the third time I let it expire. I did not want to deal with them anymore

I bought 2 Groupons for their foot treatment with a girl friend of mine.
Booking:
I bought the Groupon on Tuesday and made a call. We were booked for Thursday around lunch time right there. This floored me because 1. It was really short notice 2. It was for both of us side by side 3. They were 60 minute services right around lunch.
As a side note, their mobile online booking system is awesome. I checked it out after I already scheduled the appointments and it was really easy to use.
Environment:
The spa is definitely tiny, but has a lot of heart. The appointment had myself and my friend in side by side epic massage chairs (think Brookestone über massage leather chairs). The products that were used and sold were all very cleanly displayed and the overall vibe of the place is that it’s a lot like home.
Service:
The ladies were absolutely incredible. They offered us tea, coffee, chocolate, biscottis, everything. They went above and beyond to help us relax and enjoy our foot treatments. The treatment itself was AWESOME. I generally don’t like my feet getting worked on, but the lady was INCREDIBLE. She was gentle, attentive, and quite the hoot. She knew about all of the little places in town to check out and was generally all around sweet and wonderful.
Overall experience:
I’ll be back there again. I don’t know for what, but I’ll definitely be back. The people who worked there were very genuine and kind. Definitely a lovely little place.

Been there once before loved it bought a groupon went back the massage therapist left still went and got a terrible massage felt like I was getting beat up and then not offered anything to clean up or even a cup of water. Suffice it to say I will not be going back.

I jumped on a GroupOn deal for $ 37 for a facial, and I really enjoyed the facial since I also got a mini massage on my arms, hands, legs, and feet. My skin felt so soft and clean after the facial, and the therapist — I think her name was Tai? I’m not sure about the spelling… — was very kind and offered me some nice tips on taking care of your face.

Booked a groupon package for my wife and I here and we decided to check the reviews before actually going– I must say we were a little hesitant at first as the reviews were either amazing or horrible.
Well let me put any fears to rest for anyone else– this place was top notch. I’m not kidding.
Every single employee including the owner Marcia was extremely friendly and we had the BEST, most relaxing spa experience to date. As far as calling in to make the appointment, yes I did originally get their voicemail, but the call was returned soon after and as long as you can read/​check your e-​mail/​pay attention to your schedule there should be no confusion or missed appointments.
I have no idea why some of the reviews are so awful– I guess you can’t please everyone all the time.
Do not hesitate to book an appointment here. All the services were incredible– we left feeling like a million bucks. My wife and I are sure to become regular customers here!

While I haven’t gone in for my massage yet, it has been rescheduled twice. This is my first experience with the spa, I purchased a groupon. Everytime I have tried to contact the spa I have reached a voice mail system, not an employee. My calls have not been returned. I waited over a month for a massage, only to have it rescheduled at the last minute because of the weather. It’s ironic because I actually left the spa a message earlier in the week asking to reschedule and no one called me back because it clearly didn’t suit them until today.
Clearly disappointed already with the unprofessional attitude of the spa, and wouldn’t be going in for a massage if it weren’t the fact that I purchased one through groupon with them. I’ll stick with my regular places from now on.

I get about 1 – 2 massages a month and must say Rosa at Beneath the Surface Spa is the best massage therapist I have ever been to! She found every knot in my back and spent time ensuring that they got worked out. She listened to my needs and made sure to focus on my problem areas. She applied perfect pressure to every part of my body and I left feeling totally relaxed.
It looks like there is a parking lot in the back although I parked on the street without any problems.
I found the spa through Groupon and even though it’s about 35 minutes from my house I will be back just to see Rosa again for an amazing massage.
