I heard they closed as of 10−8−14. Sad as it’s an icon. Tried to call then just now and no answer. This is not verified info, just a heads up. I’ll miss their delicious chicken.

Been wanting to give this place a try for some time now, mainly because of all the positive Unilocal reviews. But to be honest, I feel like the Bar-B-Q I ate tonight fell short of all the praise. I walked into Thomas Pit Barbecue around 6ish, ordered a large Pork platter, went with French fries & coleslaw for sides(wasn’t feeling like the potato salad, hence, the fries). Everything was«just OK», wasn’t overwhelmed with great flavor with the pulled pork. Was a generous portion though. Coleslaw wasn’t anything special either. My total bill came to $ 11.00 on the nose, including a drink and tax. Can’t say I’ll be back, a bit of a disappointment. I guess I set my expectations too high.

I love Thomas Pit BBQ. I normally don’t eat potato salad but their PS is the only one that I eat. It’s really good. The Chicken is always good and tender. The ribs and pork are good as well. My family always has them cater for their company picnics.

The food was delicious and very affordable. This was a great choice!!! The place seems to have a lot of history and loyal customers. We were going to a chain and I am so glad that we didn’t.

The best BBQ I’ve ever had in my entire life!!! The sandwiches are loaded with flavorful, juicy, meat. The sauce is spicy and full of flavor. Staff is very friendly & the inside is nice and clean.

This was a disappointing experience, and we will not be back. My husband and I both got the pulled pork plate, with coleslaw and fries. The fries had been sitting in a warmer and were limp. The pork was incredibly salty and barely warm – it seemed like the meat had been bathed with salty broth to keep it moist. The pork didn’t have any«smoke» flavor to it, and I could not smell any wood smoke from the restaurant. The Texas toast was sad – only one side was toasted. The coleslaw was good. I can only attempt a description of the coconut pie: It tasted like artificial coconut flavoring added to cool whip.

All that I can say is that I wish the food tasted as good as it looked. Onion Rings with your pulled pork!

Good BBQ, creamy potato salad and cole slaw. The only think that prevents me from rating this establishment as «Yea! I’m a fan» is that I prefer my BBQ meat to stay on the bone. Not the case here, it is soooo tender that it falls off the bone and you find yourself picking at the meat itself. This might not be a bad thing for some but for me, it’s not my style. Also ribs are sold by the pound vs by the rack. Food though is tasty and sides are homemade.

Never again! First, the place is not very appealing(I only went because the other bbq place down the street was closed), it’s really outdated and not very clean. Second, I had the pulled pork with a fountain drink and it was pretty bad. It didn’t smell right and it did not taste good at all. The person I was with tried a single bite and decided to not eat anymore. I, being the optimist I am, decided to just smother the pork with a lot of bbq sauce to be able to eat it and couldn’t finish my plate. I then felt kind of sick for the rest of the afternoon. The only good thing about the place were the nice employees(you can only see like 2 or 3 total in the cash register and hidden in the back of the kitchen). When I left the restaurant there was a line on the drive-thru, I don’t understand why, I will never go back again.

If you are in the mood to throw your entire idea of healthy out the window… then get in your car and go to Thomas’s immediately! Without a doubt, the best BBQ in the area. However, I only allow myself a couple of visits a year.

This was the first and last time that I have ever eaten at this establishment. I took my family there today and ordered 3 pork barbeque sandwiches and 2 drinks. There were no other customers waiting for food when we ordered. There were only 1 table of 4 people who were about to leave and 1 individual up front. 15 minutes later the food still was not ready. We were patient with them. My wife went up front and asked if the food was ready and the lady at the counter said it wasn’t ready yet. We were nice to the employees and didn’t cause a fuss but couldn’t understand why the food was taking so long to be prepared with no one else in the restaurant. The food was very good once we got it but there was absolutely no reason that it took that long to put barbeque on 3 sandwich buns and fill 2 drinks.

Coming from SC, I wanted to get some good BBQ to see if it was as good… I can say YES! I had a combo plate of pulled pork and beef. The pork was good even without the sauce. If you don’t like spicy skip the sauce! But it’s oh so good! My mom had the ribs… OMG!!! The meat fell right off the bone and they were so flavorful! I’m def getting them next time I go back! Potato salad is like no other!

Good barbeque, good potato salad if your like it creamy, and some fantastic cole slaw await the early birds who eat at Thomas Pit. Early birding is the only choice for dining here, as they close at 8 pm most nights. I visited as I was passing through town just before closing, when my only was take out. I drove out to I-65 and ate at a rest area.(That’s not as horrible as it sounds. Alabama has invested nicely in its Interstate rest areas, providing picnic tables and landscaping, with tables and shelters situated well away from traffic, and on-site security). For me, the standout was the cole slaw. The cabbage is chopped finely and prepared in a non-mayonnaise base that yields a tart, crisp taste with a robust cabbage flavor. BBQ anything generally involves a not-insignificant quantity of fat, so I favor slaws that do not bring their own measure of fat to the meal. This cole slaw is among the best side orders I have ever had, actually ranking up there with the magical slaw my cousin in Columbus makes for family events. The potato salad is unique and other reviewers recommend it highly. It was not to my taste. Just as I loved the slaw for its pure and crisp lack of fat, I disliked the potato salad because apparently that’s where the mayo ended up. The potato is a fine purée suspended in a creamy white sauce in which the potato and onion and whatever else is in there get lost. It’s a very rich concoction that’s not like any potato salad I’ve experienced. Those who like creamy potato salad should try it. The BBQ chicken had the proper degree of smokiness and tender moistness. I was surprised not to have any BBQ sauce, which may have been an accidental result of being one of the last customers before closing. No matter, as there was a white sauce that went nicely with the chicken – and maybe that’s what they serve with chicken. Whatever the case, it worked. The small order had a large breast and a leg section, which is close to what some other restaurants label as a «half-chicken.» A couple of slices of dry, unadorned white bread toast were included, not worth comment(or eating, either). Next time I’m in Huntsville, I’ll plan on trying their pork and beef based BBQs.

Love the pork sandwich! Great sandwich at a great price. Make sure you get it with the coleslaw added, this takes really adds to the flavor. The ribs have good flavor and are tender. A fellow Unilocaler said the potato salad was good so I had to try it. Wow, so glad I did! The potato is in very small pieces which is how I like it, so yummy! I can’t wait to get some more. The prices are very good too.

Thomas’ is the only place I go to get my BBQ fix on. Now, can you open a place in Chicago? Thanks!

Ok went back for the first time since their new management. Food is still exceptional but the vinegar based sauce was a little off. Not to mention they put it in this crap little cups that had holes in it when we specifically said we would be traveling and asked for them to go in another kind of container. That’s my one little bone to nitpick.
