Engaged on Maui

I am not usually someone who writes long reviews.
But I’ll start by saying this for those that want a TL&DR:
Angie is the best engagement photographer you can find in Maui. Do not hesitate. It is 100% guaranteed worth it. Just look at these pictures!

Now the story:
I have never been to Hawaii but wanted to plan the most epic proposal to my fiancé (then gf) because she deserves the best. The proposal needed several elements to come together including an epic location that is off the beaten path, a pre-​recorded video of me singing and a photo deck, surprise celebration with a few our friends, an engagement photoshoot, and a beautiful sunset. Now that is a lot of things to coordinate for a day. I researched a few places and contacted Angie for an engagement photo session. She not only coordinated with me throughout the planning process, she also helped me scout the target locations. (she took sample videos of the proposal spots so I will not get lost or confused and will know my surroundings). She even worked with my friends to ensure everything comes together as an epic surprise, telling them where to hide and when to come out. I absolutely love all the photos that she took and all the spots she brought us to after the proposal. They are not just regular spots that people normally knows of and are absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend anyone to book Angie as an engagement photographer as she’s the best at her craft & her trade!

Angela Nelson is a gem! The most amazing photographer and person ever! It was a pleasure working with her. She made us feel so comfortable and made our day extra special. Three weeks ago, I proposed to my fiancé at the Westin with the help of their staff and Angela. Quite simply, a ridiculously detailed engagement somehow went perfectly with the help of these ladies and I couldn’t be more appreciative.
I contacted Angela only two weeks prior to the engagement, but the short notice was handled amazingly by her. Even though she was enjoying a vacation in South America, she was prompt in her email replies to me and the plans were set before she even made it back home. We had a short phone conversation a few days beforehand to ensure everything was perfect, she gave me some great ideas to keep it all a secret and ensure the photographs were excellent, and we were off!
The day of the engagement, I had a scheduled private, ocean view sunrise breakfast planned at the Westin. Brooke, my fiancé, had no idea the breakfast was happening, much less the engagement or photo session. Breakfast began at 6:30 AM (we were still jet lagged), I handed the ring off to the server on the way to the table, and he was scheduled to bring it out at 7:30 AM. Angela arrived 15 – 20 minutes early to spy on us and get some fantastic shots of the clueless fiancé, and then the actual proposal itself!
Everything went perfectly, she took some of the best quality engagement shots you’ll ever see, and then we were off to do the engagement session. Angela treated us to another three different locations — a secluded beach with a full rainbow in the background, the hillside before a massive coffee farm, and another wonderful beach with a massive tree and endless aqua ocean. In total, Angela took care of us for at least 90 minutes, likely closer to 120, and we wouldn’t have had it any differently.
The day of the shoot, Angela sent over 3 fully edited photos for us to make the big announcement online. All of them were beyond expectations, even after seeing her other work, and only about ten days later did we receive the full set — over 120 fully edited images!
Angela was simply fantastic. There’s nothing more I could have asked for. She went above and beyond the promised service, which was already the best available. If you’re looking for a fantastic personality with even greater photography skills, Angela is the photographer for you.

In May 2015, I was engaged in Maui with a great surprise from my loving boyfriend, Doug. I would not have changed a single thing about the plan that Angela and Doug came up with… Everything was just a dream.
Doug and Angela had contacted each other (since we live in California) via email, coming up with a perfect-​plan to ask me to be his forever.
My fiancé is not the type to just pick and choose whichever shows up first; he does some research. A LOT of research actually…
He wouldn’t have chosen Angela to be our engagement photographer if she wasn’t the BEST. And without a disappointment, she was THE BEST we could ever ask for.
Angela is detail-​oriented, passionate, and of course, most importantly a true artist.
The photos she took are PHENOMENAL!
I am so thankful that someone like Angela was able to capture our special moment so beautifully. Her photos will help us reminisce the amazing time we have had in the dreamy island of Maui.

Long Version:
Since me and my, (at the time) girlfriend, decided to go to Maui on a vacation, we mutually agreed that we would take advantage of Maui’s beautiful beaches and hire a photographer to take home the memories. Originally the plan was just the sweetheart session, but as circumstances changed and the feelings were right, a surprise engagement was absolutely the right thing to do.
Angela was actually referred to us from another photographer. This shows that she is also respected and liked by other professionals. When I contacted her the process was very easy and she took the time to get to know us to pick the absolutely perfect locations for the session. I emailed back and forth questions and a suggestions several months before our session till the very last day. Angela was always a consummate professional answering all my questions and considering all my suggestions. I asked for a separate email to send to my girlfriend that mentioned nothing about the proposal, to eliminate any possible suspicions. I discussed with Angela what my girlfriend likes and loves, what locations, sunrise or sunset, and to how the proposal will happen.
I didn’t have a fancy way of proposing, I just wanted to get the proposal out of the way in the first 10 minutes so we can move on the engagement session. I suggested the idea of having a secret word between me and Angela during the session to signify that we are both ready and set up for the proposal. The secret word was «marvelous».
We all met at the Ho’okipa Beach, Northern Maui. The proposal went perfectly, as Angela said, «this view is marvelous» and I replied «it truly is marvelous» to confirm both parties are ready. The proposal photos were breathtaking. The colors of the sunrise sky, the beautiful waves, and the cliffs to bring out even more contrast.
To make the moment even more special was the multiple locations we went to in one session. It was easy to go from place to place by following her in our jeep rental. We went down to the beach to take pictures with the sea turtles (which my fiancée loves). We also took some photos at a sea wall and at the stairs heading to the beach. Here I purchased leis from Angela to add to the session. They were excellent touches to the pictures and brought a truly Hawaiian cultural feel to it. We also went to an empty road that was surrounded by sugar can fields and tall trees. It was very artistic. We went to another beach by Mama’s Fish House (amazing food) and took photos dancing, sitting on a palm tree, and posing at a rustic gate. Finally the photo shoot ended at the Paia Coffee Shop, where the photos where very colorful and warm.
It was such a great experience and we enjoyed exploring beautiful parts of Maui with Angela. She was so easy to talk to and it never felt uncomfortable or awkward. She made us very at ease in front of the camera and we appreciated her patience and guidance throughout the whole process. We never felt rushed and time was never wasted. Angela was a blast to work with! I cannot thank her enough for her help! She captured me proposing to my girlfriend at the top of Haleakala at sunrise and the pictures were breath taking! Then the engagement photos after were amazing! Angela has an amazing talent and she uses it well! I am very glad I found her to capture this moment for me and my new fiancée.

There are a few moments in life that we will continue to relive throughout our lives. A proposal definitely falls into that category. When you truly love someone, you want to give them a moment to WANT to remember. If you want to be successful at this, work with Angela and her team. Hands down.
Trying to plan a proposal from a different state is incredibly difficult. She went above and beyond, and I could not be happier with my experience. She was extremely accommodating to what I envisioned. Being the nervous BF I was (very particular about details) we had to of exchanged at least 20+ emails discussing and planning. She was always quick and immediate with her responses. I told her what I wanted, and she worked incredibly hard to create it. She called numerous venues, and even when I was ready to settle she didn’t stop. She continued looking to try and give me exactly what I wanted. She worked beyond my expectations, and found something better than I imagined. They even drove out of their way to pick up a sign I had made prior to the proposal and set it up! It all worked out perfectly, and within budget! I am extremely grateful to have found someone as passionate about the proposal experience as I was.
Once the proposal itself went down, her team stepped in to do an engagement photoshoot! Worth every single penny. They did an amazing job capturing that moment. I was blown away by the pictures they took! I will always have amazing pictures to help us relive that moment. If you don’t believe it, look up «@engagedonmaui». You will not be disappointed!

«Anything for art.» These were the exact three words that came out of Angela’s mouth, lying on the dusty grounds outside Kula Lodge, taking a photo for our post-​engagement portraits. At that moment I knew I made a very good decision of getting her to capture, and be a part of, a milestone in my relationship with my fiancé. She’s very down to earth, very accommodating, and will help you in every way she possibly can. She’s very personable but professional, and responsive to all my questions via email and text. It was my first time in Maui when I proposed to my girlfriend so I was totally clueless about the island but she was able to help me decide where I think would be the best place to pop the question. She helped me big time with my itinerary for the big day to make sure we make it to the top of Haleakala on time!
Lo and behold, the happiest moment of my life in the most beautiful setting you could ever imagine for a proposal to go down, became a reality. The pictures turned out AMAZING. The night sky looking like a carpet of stars was unbelievable, the colors during sunrise were lovely, and my fiancé looked so beautiful I cried. Everything was perfect and she was able to capture all those to my delight! I wasn’t just satisfied with her work, I was delighted!
Even though I only got to meet her once, the way that she communicated with me before, during, and after my engagement, made me feel that we’ve known each other for a very long time and our connection is more than just a photographer-​client thing but a lifelong friendship that I’ll always hold dear to my heart. Before getting engaged, one thing I always hoped my to-​be fiancé Joey knew without me having to tell him was to hire a photographer. Capturing that moment is something you can have forever and as someone who is in love with photography, it seemed like a no-​brainer to me. You get a ton of pictures of your wedding day — why not pictures of when the journey begins?
Apparently Joe was a mind reader (or just really intuitive) because my future husband hired Engaged on Maui before our trip to the island this May. Obviously, I was not involved in the process leading up to the actual day, but from what my fiancé said, Angela was super helpful, a complete joy to work with, and flexible when our plans changed at the last minute. As a local, she was able to recommend some of the best, most beautiful places on the island for Joey to pop the big question. She helped to choose the secluded, romantic, and completely breathtaking backdrop of Oneloa /​Ironwoods Beach for us.
She was super sneaky and I had no idea what was coming. It was only after I said «Of course» that my fiancé pointed out Angela a bit down the beach clicking away. After getting the whole proposal (tears and all) captured, she proceeded to spend the next two hours doing a full engagement shoot with us on the beach. She had us climbing over rocks, dancing on the beach, playing in the ocean… all against a beautiful sunset and view of Molokai in the background.
A few hours after the shoot, she sent us a teaser with four AMAZING shots for us to share with our friends and family. A few weeks later, the whole set was available and the photos were breathtaking. She made us look amazing and I was so excited to see how well everything turned out.
Angela is an absolute sweetheart. She took the time to ask questions about each of us and our relationship together. She captured us in a way I didn’t even know was possible and was so fun to work with. I had such a blast running around on the beach with her and Joey. She even sent us a thank you card a few weeks after the big day! Such a nice touch. Thanks to Angela we are going to have wonderful memories of our engagements and photos to look back on for the rest of our lives. I really cannot thank her enough for this amazing experience.
