Makawao Veterinary Clinic

I arranged for Makawao Veterinary Clinic to meet my son and his dog at OGG when we flew in from California and they provided the utmost in service! Every step of the way, Tracy was on top of everything and Margaret was great when she met our plane. Although we live in Hilo, I would definitely trust Makawao Veterinary with any pet needs!

well i would like to take the time here to explain what so drastically went wrong here. I had the c section and being happy with my puppies i did not explain that i did lost a puppy after the c section, i have had many c sections with my dogs and been a witness and assistant to just as many so when i had mentioned that two of the puppies after coming out looked like they were not waking up quiet as good as the others i suggested for them to be put on oxygen and given epinephrine under the tongue as my other vets have done and it kinda gives them a jump start. the assistant told me they only do that if they are at the point of dying. one snapped out of it and the other one died about five min later. it was her not being open to my advice that i feel lost this puppy. so i get home and the umbilical cords were cut extremely long so the mom dog started chewing them off so i had to re tie them higher, four days goes by and i have a very sick puppy i can just tell, so i call makawao as they were the ones i had only worked with and they said yes come in you will pay emergency visit, i said fine ill be right over, so 10 min later i am there (and I’ve had emergency visits at 10 other vets many of times and this was treated completely different) the assistant took my puppy back as i stood in the waiting room and i told her to say the puppies lips were blue, she comes back out with my puppy and says the vet says that your puppy is a little cold i said well can you put him on a heat pad? i expected them to take him back and run some tests. on the phone they said they would do a blood test. when i got there that was not an option then and instead x ray was what they recommended. didn’t put pup on oxygen or anything and said if he doesnt improve in the next 2 hours that to bring him back. me never being treated this way and in a new environment left and went home to get him on a heat pad. i called my mom and she said they don’t want to take him go somewhere else or he’s gonna die. so i was driving to central maui when he passed away in my arms. so i went back home. two days later i have a problem with blue lips and i went to central to begin with and pup had low glucose which was found out in blood test and pup after being on antibiotics and getting glucose ended up doing fine. they suggested one of the reasons the pups got colicky was due to possible bacteria getting in long umbilical cords. anyway back to what I’m dealing with now i have been called and got three papers in the mail saying i owe $ 70 for the visit. I don’t feel i need to pay it as yes the pup died but if a dog dies at the vets your still responsible for the bills. my reasoning is because i was never taken into a room a vet never saw me i was taking through a third party in the waiting room and told me bad information and my puppy died literally 30 min after i left. this is not the way a patient should be treated and i have been to central maui a few times in case this is the“islands way of practicing” and this is not true, anywhere else you go anywhere you are seen and taken in and you are talked to by the vet. if you brought your kid to the dr because they are very ill do you expect all your questions to be answered by the lady behind the desk? noooo very bad way of handling a patient that would bring lots of business being a breeder and referring clients, so if they want to continue to harass me for $ 70 so desperately then this will have to be handled another way. i hope they can get over that they made a mistake and move on already. i was also told the owner would talk to me about 3 weeks ago and i haven’t got a call, will probably get another one after I called them, but this is not the way you handle a practice otherwise people should know ahead of time that this a different way but the only way they handle emergencies…

I decided to take my bulldog mix here Friday for a check-​up as she was due for her supply of Trifexis and had what looked like an irritated toenail on each of her hind legs. We recently moved from Honolulu and wanted to get her acquainted with a new vet. (We loved King Street Pet Hospital on Oahu but that’s another review!)
We waited for about 10 mins in the lobby (no big deal) and then she was weighed and we were asked to wait in a treatment room for the doctor after some preliminary questions. After 15 or so minutes, the tech came in to take blood for a heartworm test — but she took my baby out of the room. I was surprised but I figured maybe there was one tech that did the blood draws and it was easier for doggie patients to come to him/​her.
What shocked me was that the tech brought her back after about 5 mins and said that not only had they drawn blood, the vet had already examined her and would be in shortly to discuss. What?!? Why would they examine her without me in the room?
When Dr. Butler (male) finally showed up, his first question was if she had «issues» with men. Well, I could have told you all about her little peculiarities had you asked me FIRST! (She’s a rescue that we adopted at around 2 years old) Then he informed me that she had been so nervous that she had «expressed her anal glands» during the exam. Well, that has NEVER happened before and wouldn’t have happened THIS time if you hadn’t taken my poor dog away from me to examine her! JEEZ!
Anyway, we got her meds and regimen for her toes. I would say that everything else about our experience, from making the appointment to cashing out, was great but it certainly didn’t make up for the crappy experience my dog had and that’s why the 3 stars.

Awesome clinic Dr. Butler is so good, not aggressive at all. I am so happy to have a vet that is looking at my dogs not my wallet!

Last year I got home very late at night to see my diabetic cat in a very bad state. He was in diabetic shock and was not responding to me at all. I called the emergency number at approximately 12 am that morning. The dr met me within an hr at the clinic. He came out that late evening in most peoples middle of the night to take care.
