Randy is extremely knowledgable and accommodating. These hikes are not something you want to do without a guide. My wife was a little uncomfortable in the beginning of the tour but Randy literally walked her through it. We enjoyed every minute of the hike — from the spectacular views to swimming in the pools/​waterfalls. I wouldn’t think about booking a tour with anyone else, Randy is the man!

Don’t go alone — I am so thankful we had a professional guide. We would not have been able to hike deep into the jungle terrain without Randy’s expert guidance. He was extremely knowledgeable on the history of Maui, geography, horticulture and hiking. We learned so much along the way. I will definitely recommend Randy to anyone wanting to hike Maui.

Having traveled around the world, the all-​day hike with Randy is one of the best vacation days that I have ever had. My fiancé and I did and all-​day hiking tour, which was two hikes (one in the rainforest and one to the waterfalls). These are not your run-​of-​the-​mill hikes. Rather, they are off the commonly traveled paths and the trailhead was barely visible. We literally climbed the the rainforest, down tree roots, and across streams. We learned all about the history of the island and a tremendous amount about all of the plants and trees as we passed. Several times we tasted fruit growing on the trees and even found a take-​home recently dropped avocado. We saw and held a chameleon and swam at the base of multiple waterfalls. I could not think of a much better way so spend a day in Maui. Randy, a 35– year resident and hiker of Maui,
was generous, helpful, and informative. I will be recommending these hikes to all traveling to Maui.

My husband and I went on the half day hike with Randy. It was raining and there were flash flood advisories. We went anyway looking for adventure. The hike was modified due to the weather but we still got to see waterfalls and the beautiful scenery that Maui has to offer. We ate fruit off trees and learned a lot about the vegetation. We had a group of 7, sweet and intimate. So much fun, we will definitely be doing it again! Thanks Randy!

We booked a moderate West Maui hike with Randy and we brought our 7yr old daughter and 10 month old son. There were 8 of us, all family. We had a blast! Randy is very knowledgeable of the area and culture. Randy brought water, chips, and fruit. I would recommend him as a tour guide. He was great!

Had the best time with Randy! Had to adjust the type of tour due to the weather. Glad we were in shape. Hiked in the river and through the rain forest… And it started raining! Even more exciting! I would highly recommend. Very personable, informative, and exciting.

This was our second time hiking Randy and both times were amazing!!! He took our family of four (which includes 2 teenagers that are hard to impress) on the half day rainforest waterfall hike. He is a wealth of information about Hawaiian culture and history. He is also kept it very fun for our teenagers.
The hike itself was a bit more challenging this time due to the incoming tropical storm. I was very concerned that it would come earlier than expected and we would be trapped in the rain. However Randy was on top of it at very minute even using cues in nature to change our course. Unfortunately we had to eliminate one leg of the hike due to the weather but I was grateful that he did not take unnecessary risks (and he graciously offered a partial refund). As well, we learned a lot on how to use nature as a weather guide.
As everyone else has said we did see a lot of interesting flora and fruits. All of us, teenagers included, had a great time! We will definitely call Randy again when we return to Maui!!!

Great day with Randy! This was our second hike on Maui (the previous time with another company on East Maui) and we really enjoyed this one. Randy was very informative and was able to tell us about just about every plant. He also knew a lot of the history of Maui and Hawaii and filled in times we were not talking plants with history. It was about a 3 hour hike or so with a nice stop at a pool for swimming.
You should let him know the ability of your hikers before you go on the trip as he can make it as tough or as easy as you want. Our youngest was 11 and the hike was no problem for him.

My husband and I recently went on a half day hike with Randy, another couple and a family of 5. Randy was a great guide and extremely knowledgeable about the island and any random question you may have. He catered to everyone’s athletic ability, as our group included an older couple and a family with several teenagers. We met Randy in the morning, and drove to the start of the trail (probably about 20 minutes) and were back to the car around 1 pm. He provided a backpack, water, snacks of chips and dried fruit. We will definitely do this again next time we are in Maui, probably the full day hike next time.

This was my second time hiking with Randy. Two years ago, it was just my mom and I — this time we brought our husbands and my brother. We did the Haleakala Falls hike, which was an easy, short hike — perfect for our family, since my parents are both novice hikers. Randy knows his stuff and made us felt very safe. He gave us lots of insight into the culture, wildlife, etc… Just a genuinely nice guy. As far as choosing a hike, I enjoyed the West Maui Waterfall hike more — prettier views and a bit longer. But they were both very enjoyable. I’d highly recommend booking with Randy; much better than a cookie-​cutter group tour with tons of other people.

Oh no. I booked the trip with randy for 2 hour hike but we spent most of the time in the bamboo forest having «conversations». the hike we did is about 30 mins max and only walked through the one waterfall. there is no sandwich packed by him. he got some bottled water and candy pineapple and chips for us. for $ 150 for two. I think it’s over-​rated all around. we did the hike maui before with a bigger tour to twin falls which was way better and you felt like a good exercise after. I think randy is taking it easy today cuz there is only two of us with him. so called «moderate» hike is just a walk in the park. call him before hand and clarify where he want you to take him to :) yes, he does want you to drive him so maybe…:) he can save gas there. it’s not the best we get. we did get better hike before. if he is taking you to bamboo forest in maui… just say no… that’s a place u can do it yourself easily. I am sure randy has great knowledge on the island and culture. just we did not experience it at all. unfortunately… learning the basic Hawaiian for the first timers might be humorous but not for someone who heard that 4 or 5 times. if you are gonna go with randy, do your homework way before..

My husband and I really enjoyed this hike. We did the hike on the earlier part of our trip and it helped me appreciate the island even more. (This is our fourth visit.)
Randy takes small groups to trails that seem to be fairly secluded. He demonstrated a broad knowledge of Hawaii during our half day hike. It was fun jumping rocks to cross streams, but I would suggest wearing hiking sandals rather than athletic or hiking shoes. We saw a few waterfalls and did the fig tree root climb (mentioned in one of the earlier reviews) down to the pool — also fun — and we swam in the pool! It’s small so don’t expect to get a workout. that’s what the ocean is for.
This part may seem trivial to some… I love passion fruit «lilikoi». Randy pointed out much of the flora surrounding us and even picked some berries. He showed us what the lilikoi vine looks like and on our (horseback) trail ride today, the lilikoi vines and fruit seem to be popping out at me. Knowing what to look for was kind of cool.
All in all it was an enjoyable morning and worth the time and money.

We booked our hike through the information on Randy’s website several weeks before our trip. This was one of the best travel activities I think my husband and I could have done! Randy was a great guide. He was a calm host, guiding us easily through the trails. He was fun to hike with, but was not overwhelming with too much information and interruption as I have found some tours to be. He took us out with another couple, conveniently around the same age as us.
Randy also provided some dried fruit and chips as well as several bottles of water for us to enjoy during our hike. He also offered us a backpack to use, but we had brought our own. I thought that was nice, though!
Be prepared to have fun, and also be prepared to walk through a lot of water. Your feet will not stay dry!
One caution: Randy said he didn’t think we would need bug spray (he had some in his pack just in case), but we totally did. I did not apply it until it was too late and got a ton of misquito bites…

My husband and I just spent a half-​day hiking with Randy. I really wanted to see waterfalls and swim in pools and he put together a great morning that let us do just that. We learned a great deal about the history of Hawaii (both geological and historical). Randy is also a wealth of information about the various plants throughout Hawaii. He seemed to know the Hawaiian and English names of nearly everything we passed. We even ate a couple of wild berries.
The hike included a lot of scrambling over rocks and quite a few stream crossings. I could have had better shoes (Randy wears water shoes) but I stayed dry despite my poor planning. My favorite part was climbing ~8 feet down the roots of a fig tree to a large pool that we could swim in. We have some amazing pictures!
The hike we did was not very strenuous and if you are in reasonable shape you will be able to do it without a problem. Having decent balance is probably more important than being physically fit.

My wife and I and novice hikers. We really wanted more of a hike than a walk while in Maui in that we wanted a challenge. Randy suggested the half-​day rainforest hike and it was perfect. The hike had some boulder scrambling, river crossings, and steeper areas to deal with. This being our first guided hike we learned a lot about how to deal with river crossings, wet rocks, and boulders safely. We were also treated to a wealth of information about the history of the island and the various flora and fauna. Randy had us try some very tasty little fruits from the trees which my wife loved. The scenery on the trail is beautiful and the colors amazing.
We both agreed that we never would have tried to do that hike on our own due to the what we would have perceived as the dangers but having Randy there who has done it before many times took any fear away. I wouldn’t say it was difficult but challenging enough, mostly when you’re on vacation in paradise. He provides everything you need for the hike all you need to bring is yourself a the appropriate clothing and footwear.
He really did his best to personalize the hike as much as possible. He only does small groups (less than 6 I believe). If you want a challenging, fun, informative, and scenic activity in Maui between bumming around on the beach, this is it.

Randy «Lanaki» Warner is a wealth of knowledge about Maui. He knows a lot regarding the flora and fauna on Maui as well as being a very nice gentleman. He has a lot of excellent reviews on Trip Advisor.
We took a half-​day hike with Randy. Again, Hurricane Felicia played havoc on our schedule, so we could only fit in a half-​day West Maui hike. We wanted to do either the «Indiana Jones» hike or the full day hike of West Maui and a part of the Haleakala national park hike.
Since it had been raining earlier in the day, we weren’t able to swim in the fresh water pools, but had an excellent hike with Randy. The trail that he took us on was not that challenging, but we would have never found it by ourselves. As we passed trees and plants, Randy would tell us what they were used for in the Hawaiian past. Some of the fruit can be eaten and he’ll point them out to you.
The day we went there were a ton of mosquitoes flying around and I got bit about 10 times on my arms, legs and neck. You should bring bug spray, but if you don’t Randy will normally have some.
Once we reached our destination, we relaxed for a while and Randy provided some dried pineapples and papaya. Normally, you can swim in each of the three stops on this hike, but since there was so much run off from the mountain, it was unsafe.
