FAA offers transition from one addiction to another, albeit a healthier one. Like AA, FAA is a 12 step program, and like AA, the other members of the family pay a large price in terms of loss of time with an FAA member. At the same time FA treats the symptom of an eating disorder not its true cause. Adherence to FA allows each participant to live a highly restricted life that involves many others outside of the family with no end in sight. If FAA can be avoided, there is good reason to do so. If not, it is a last resort, and it does seem to work for some.
