This place could be so much more than it is, which at the end of the day is a mediocre deli in a great location run by some of the rudest people you’ll come across. One of the employees has her car parked near the entrance and has two beautiful but very aggressive golden retrievers tied to it and they constantly bark and lunge at dogs passing by, which results in their owner — one of the women working behind the counter — running out and yelling at the owners of the dogs passing by! Once inside this same woman works the counter and takes orders, and her demeanor is no better behind the counter than it is when she’s out front scaring people away! She behaves this way in full view of her co-workers, so I assume she owns the place or is related to the person who does. Food is very mediocre and the seating is limited, both of which could be overlooked if the people working there weren’t so odd and incredibly rude. Hopefully this place goes out of business fast and someone else takes over who understands the value of customer service!

Unimaginably bad customer service. I was shocked by my experience however reading some of the previous reviews — the management here are no strangers to yelling and arguing with customers. They clearly do not seem to care if they get repeat business. I allowed my two golden retrievers say«hi» to the two dogs that one of the employees always has tied to a truck at the front door. I was looking to get some water for them. It has always been my experience that every restaurant I have ever gone to has been able to accommodate a request for some water in a small container for my dogs. Suddenly a woman came running out of the restaurant yelling at me to keep my dogs away from her dogs.(if her dogs are so aggressive, why on earth would she have them tied up in front of the door to the restaurant day in and day out. — I suppose I have to wonder how kind it is to make a dog spend all day tied to a truck on an incredibly short lead) I told the woman I was looking for some water for my dogs. When I realized that this woman was working at the counter, I asked her where I could get some water. She replied«How should I know where you get water?» I was stunned and followed her inside thinking maybe she didnt understand my request. I asked again and she yelled again«They are not MY dogs — get your own water. I would never dream of leaving my house without water for my dogs» I was shocked and speechless — Needless to say I went to eat across the street and ate at JOHN’S GARDEN — which is excellent! Over lunch I was a bit confused at what happened and feeling like I needed some closure. Therefore I went back and decided to tell the manager. I found an older woman who wouldnt actually tell me her position with the restaurant(weird) — however I told her that I was uncomfortable with how I was treated earlier — she stared at me blankly and said«So, do you want something?» I shrugged and said that if I managed a business I would be very interested in knowing about examples of customer service(both good and bad). She was completely indifferent. Two minutes later, while I was in my car getting ready to leave, the original dogowner/café worker came running out screaming at me(again) — and again attempting to shame me for being a bad dog owner for leaving home without water(which wasnt accurate) — once again I stared in disbelief at this woman who clearly mentally imbalanced. I will never go back here and wanted everyone to be warned accordingly.

The food is ok, but it is like going to the DMV when you order… Slow and confusing. Also, don’t get there too early because even though they are supposed to open at 7, they actually run on «Malibu» time. That means you need to be prepared to hang out in your Ugg boots for a while until if you get there before 8.

Good food. Clean walk in sandwich shop. All good except for the two dogs tied up at the entrance. They are very aggressive towards other dogs and if they had not been tethered there would have been a massive dog fight. They barked, bared their teeth and strained their leashes and freaked us all out Seems an employee owns these dogs and scurries out shooing away anyone with dogs from hers. I would think the owner would want to attract people in not post guard dogs to keep clients out!

Best sandwiches in LA metro area. «I’ll have what Phil’s having» on Netflix brought me here. Very happy!

Food is good. It sucks that they only have 1 – 2 people working on your sandwich. I understand it is a small space but the lunch crowd is crazy and for us 30 minute kids, we have no chance of getting food unless you go after 1 with hopes there isn’t anyone in front of you. The food is delicious.(No you can not call in your order)

There’s an older white guy who works at the deli. He’s an awfully shitty person for no apparent reason. Walked out he was so rude. Dear old white guy why so shitty of a human? I hope you’re okay man.

So done with this place! Been going with my husband on day trips for over ten years. Started going when this place used to be charming and was pretty much the only game in town and we were willing to put up with their cheap basic pastries– ya know, like airplane food. Today we went to get a treat and coffee. Before we went in, we were half joking about the old grump that works(owns?) the bakery, giggling about how she hoards the soy milk(seriously, no one else does this. Chill out lady!) and is just an utter B-word to us everytime. Not only was she there, she was literally yelling at some poor old guy who accidentally put his trash in the wrong place. I turned on my heel and walked out never to return. Don’t need to patronize this place when SO many better, nicer, more relevant places have sprung up around Malibu. Buh-Bye . Lady, if you’re not the owner, I hope the owners listen up and fire you soon before you drive their business into the ground with your miserly old rude ways!

Whenever in the area, swing by to grab a sandwich. Every thing is fresh and made to order… my choice is the corn beef sandwich. The only place in town even remotely similar to true corn beef like that in New York.

Too bad the reviews of this place all point to poor customer service. I saw this place mentioned on a food show recently, but I always check Unilocal prior to visiting a location to see what my fellow foodies think about it, and based on the reviews, I will not be giving them my business. I get that they may have good sandwiches, and that their rude attitudes are kind of their shtick, it’s still an experience, and there are so many great sandwich places in LA that with amazing food, AND don’t treat their customers like crap… oh well, they did it to themselves

On paper, I look like a very loyal customer. Come here at least once a week. Thank goodness for Unilocal.Feel bad writing this review because I will continue coming here as it is really the ONLY option for a mediocre quick lunch in town. Service is just terrible. Absolutely terrible. Need more competition in town to force them to step their game up. It’s like time warner in here. It gets a 2 because food isn’t terrible. I actually think the ladies who work here are super sweet, too.

Love this place, one of the best smoked salmon sandwiches I’ve ever eaten and I have a sneaking suspicion it was missing the gluten, so didn’t see that synopsis coming. No indoor seating but outdoor seating is abundant and so is parking. The only thing I don’t get about this area is that none of the places have restrooms. So, that’s awkward. Other than that, great selection, laid-back atmosphere, really fresh deli.

So, this is going to be another one of those«If-could-give-it-a-zero-rating-I-would» kinda reviews. I’ve been to this place numerous times and I also remember really enjoying their sandwiches, but I have never been so appalled by the customer service at this establishment. That heavily Botoxed skeleton who helped us at the coffee bar/sweets counter was absolutely despicable. She’s extremely lucky my mood was stabilized at that moment she snapped at me out of nowhere because I would’ve ripped her a new one, so help her God. Not many things get my blood boiling, but this rhymes with witch struck a nerve that has compelled me to leave this review. And just as an FYI, that coffee crumb cake was as BASIC and DRY as your nether region most likely is, you stuffy old hag. Bravo. #GirlBye

Malibu Kitchen is a nice little lunch spot in the super posh Malibu Country Mart, where you can grab a salad or sandwich while you shop for designer yoga clothes. I came for a quick lunch while visiting a friend in Malibu. I had my dog with me, so this ended up being a great choice. Apparently Malibu Kitchen has a café dog, a fluffy adorable golden who hangs out leashed on the patio. As a result, the place is very dog friendly, and my basset hound fit right in. The set-up is casual and easy – you order at a counter, and seat yourself with your food. Service was quick and friendly. I thought the interior was cute, but spent most of my time on the patio, as I did have a fifty-pound basset hound on my hands. It was a pretty pleasant space, nothing fancy, but comfortable. The menu was huge, almost overwhelmingly so, but I settled on a pulled pork blue plate special, which came with mashed potatoes and cole slaw. It was a solid lunch. The pork was tender and tasty, if slightly dry, and I liked the potatoes. The cole slaw was kind of bland, but not bad. My friend noted that the pulled pork sandwich was his favorite thing here, so maybe I’ll try that if I make it back here. I also ate a bit of a pumpkin coffee cake, and that was great, dense and moist and decadently sweet. I imagine Malibu Kitchen is good for these on-the-go snacks and pastries in addition to easy lunches. It’s a cute spot for a bite and some quality time with dogs and friends in deep Malibu.

I DON’T like this place. I’ve been a couple times for a meatloaf sandwich(which I totally recommend), but don’t expect to see warm smiles and butterflies all around the people here. The big lipped lady at the sweets counter was rude, but after hanging out for 30 minutes, I realized that was everyone’s demeanor. It’s as if the women staff here don’t like questions. Short answers and insincere felt. Pastries are not recommended, unless I was handed a week old raspberry cinnamon twist. Maybe go for the meatloaf sandwich to-go and bring it over to the more sunny side by The Coffee Bean.

For an early lunch, I came here just as they were doing final preparation on the deli counter. Be warned, the deli counter inside begins lunch sometime between 11:00 am and 11:15 am. After a short wait, I ordered the New York, New York bagel and lox on a toasted poppy seed bagel. It was utterly fantastic, and the portion was extremely generous. Each HALF of the bagel is topped with a generous spread of cream cheese and topped with many slices of lox, a tomato slice, and some red onion. If they had capers, it’d be A+. The bagel itself was really good and the lox had a great smokey flavor without overpowering fish taste. I’ll surely return for this in the future!

The Red Velvet Cupcakes are awesome and gigantic for a fair price! The service was always nice and the places to sit outside were fine!

Really bad service. Disorganized and rude. We ordered a couple of sandwiches to go. It took about 45 minutes !!! When they were ready they handed them to us wrapped in a thin paper. No bag just paper with tape. Before I walked out the store the sandwich started leaking through the paper. I brought if back as I did not want a mess in my car. The woman at the counter was hostile and rude. She handed me a small piece of foil that was big enough to cover one side only. I told her this was not going to work and she snapped as if her meds just wore off. She started yelling at me to calm down. A total nut job. She handed me a second tiny price of foil to wrap around the other side. She was too stupid to understand that the juice dripping out of the sandwich all down my hand was going to leak out if you use 2 small bits of foil. Will never come back here.

My gosh what a cute little Country Mart! Prices are high, but everything is SO good! The sandwiches, the cookies and desserts, they carry unique gifts and have some grocery items you can’t find everywhere else. It can get really full, the line for sandwiches and salads is insanely long. They have a bit of nice outdoor seating, great for people watching. The quality is exceptional, service can be a hit or miss, but it is a great stop while shopping in the area!

One of my favorite places to go in Malibu. When I was in college I worked at the Malibu country Mart at Fred Segal’s one summer. Needless to say it was the best summer ever, hanging out close to the beach while you work is the best. Walking around here brings back the best memories. This place has one of the most incredible bakeries and delis around they can make you just about any sandwich you can think of plus they have fresh fruit salad. Even though the line can sometimes be very long it moves quickly and the people that work there are friendly and very efficient! This is my go to place when I need to pick up treats.
